Niko9 on I really miss flavor text

Or at least, flavor text that really had some oomph behind it. I've been looking at brother's war this morning and there are so many legends in there that feel, I don't know, just so like filler cards, and I think that part of it is how much flavor text is missing.

What makes flavor text so important (ha, to me at least) is that at worst of times it doesn't take anything away from the game, but at best of times it's amazing short form storytelling. I mean, why would you play no text rancor when you can play Rancor : ) It adds nothing, but it adds so much too.

Heh, and I'm sorry if this is a little ranty, it's just that my interest is so high for magic right now, but I just feel like they are printing things further and further from what I loved about old magic, and that makes it hard to get into new sets. Take Sheoldred, the Apocalypse that's just the most throw away line ever. And, I'm not saying that everything has to be Visara the Dreadful but at the same time, I'd love Urza, Mishra, and other characters that have so much lore to have something fun on the card.

The last set I can remember with great flavor text was AFR. The flavor lands are some of my all time favorite lands, and I just loved most all of the set, just because of how full of life everything was. Maybe that is gone though in the face of making more sets, and if it is, I honestly feel like the game has lost something that is more important than any of us really realize. Most decks I've ever made are based on flavor, so I can say from my own perspective at least, that flavor text is actually a big part of how I play the game, and I'm really starting to worry a bit if my style of magic is phasing out.

But anyways, don't mean to prattle too much : ) What are some of your favorite flavors texts? I do think that Rancor is maybe the perfect flavor text, but I also like quick quips like Gallia of the Endless Dance or Bag of Holding

Though, to be fair, I have heard that the flavor of the warhammer set was really good. I feel like I just don't get it, but if it is, then that's actually pretty awesome. Mostly I just wish that they took this same approach to the magic characters.

Delphen7 on need help improving my deck

Having reviewed the list, I feel Bard Class is kind of an odd card out here. With 10 total legendaries (4 unique ones), I don't think it's worth it currently.

I also think Utopia Sprawl is worth consideration. Turn 1 Arbor Elf into Turn 2 this is 4 mana -- on turn 2. That makes your planeswalkers a lot better suddenly, and lets you drop Elder Dragon War turn two as well.

Bard Class

If you want to keep Bard Class, then I would suggest leaning heavier into the legendary theme, maybe with some Gallia of the Endless Dance, Radha, Heir to Keld, or Targ Nar, Demon-Fang Gnoll. These would make leveling up Bard Class feel a lot better, provide ramp and aggressive creatures, and make the third level a lot more relevant. With this route the Weatherseed Treaty feels a little slow.

Power Conduit

Going back to my previous comment about Bard Class power, you could cut Bard Class and some of the related cards to lean harder into the Power Conduit synergies. Some ideas are Arni Slays the Troll as it provides mana, buffs, and lifegain. The Flame of Keld looping is also very powerful. The Akroan War continually steals creatures. Waking the Trolls does a lot of very powerful things suddenly.

I ran out of time to finish these thoughts, but if you want more/different suggestions just note so :)

Thank you! But on the 3-drop slot apart from the main purpose of the deck, Primal Forcemage, I already have Viashino Sandsprinter! He returns to my hand and can gain the +3/+3 once more on the next turn!

On the 2-drop slot I have the card-drawing Gallia of the Endless Dance which lets me draw cards (plus a little bit of random Madness synergy) and the hit-for-less but evasive Impetuous Sunchaser! He can also carry a Loxodon Warhammer more effectively than Zhur-Taa Goblin.

I had given Rhythm of the Wild a thought, too. But apart from the main engine, Primal Forcemage, every creature already has haste! And the +1/+1 counter strategy is not very synergistic when most of my creatures return back to my hand on purpose... :-/

It's a sideboard option vs counterspells, yes. I just wanted to keep the sideboard simple so when a new player sees the whole deck they'll think they can easily play it.

Thank you for the suggestions!

Niko9 on Who are the Commanders you …

I guess rather than commander to commander, I tend to like to play against decks that are active on the board. So something like Gallia of the Endless Dance is awesome because it's a low cmc commander who will always be doing things. I like having an ever evolving puzzle to try to play into, and I really enjoy watching the boardstate grow into it's own monster every game.

What I have trouble playing against is something like Zacama, Primal Calamity that will just sit back and ramp and boardwipe until Zacama comes out and then win. It's not a puzzle to solve, it's like a card to solve, and I don't hate hate it, but I do find it much less fun to play against.

Even if I lose to someone who is actively progressing their boardstate and doing lots of things, it doesn't ever feel bad. Because you can analyze that and learn and figure out what you need to be doing on your turns to do better next time. But the play pattern of, ramp, wipe, wait, then do one big thing, that feels like, yeah, the way to stop that is to hold up interaction, which just makes the game even more inactive.

Honestly, I love Zacama in theory, just in practice, not so much : )

Radha is a great aggro elf, and I think the deck looks really good as is. I have a modern Radha deck and here are a few tricks I've got in there. You'll have to judge and see if you think they will fit for edh or in your deck, but I figure, the more ideas the better :)

Kessig Wolf Run is a great land that can pump your creatures. It's expensive mana wise, but in this deck you will be making just a ton of mana, so it usually works great.

Tilonalli's Summoner doesn't go infinite with Radha, but does play very nice. You should usually get ascend pretty easy with the tokens, and it's just a nice place to put your mana. Put all your mana into summoner at combat and then get it all back with Radha for main phase 2, it feels amazing.

might of masses may be better in 60 card, but it might be a way to just knock somebody out in edh. Got a ton of creatures from T-summoner? Pump up one of your big tramplers to absolute absurdity.

Fumiko the Lowblood She can act like removal for a lot of your opponent's small creatures and if you give her trample with Kessig Wolf Run she's an attacking monster. You can pump her up and if you have enough attacking creatures, a lot of the time their blocks just don't matter. Plus, it just feels good to see all your opponent's dorks attack into oblivion.

Gallia of the Endless Dance Mask of Memory Explorer's Scope Sword of Fire and Ice or anything else that gets value off attacks can be great.

I think that's it. Sorry I don't have more advice, but my deck is probably very different. It has a lot of cards like Monastery Swiftspear to play with Savage Swipe and get removal plus very fast buffs for attacking into an empty board. But I don't think that would translate too well into edh.

Good luck with this one! It looks basically there to me with a ton of good stuff and synergy. I do wonder if you need things like Cultivate with all the creature ramp that you have, but you'd know better than me if you are playing it.

Title says it all my friends! Have you ever seen a card that you absolutely wanted to be better? Sure we can all talk about 0-mana counter spells, tutors, 10/10 creatures for ... That isn't exactly what this thread is for.

Have you ever sat there in spoiler season, saw a card and went "meh"? Or worse, saw a card that you got really excited for only to realize it's kinda garbage?

Link the card's name in your post so we can compare what it currently is, to what your new design is :) Here's one that I feel so let down about, and how I'd improve upon her <3

Gallia of the Endless Dance

Legendary Creature - Satyr Bard (Because Bard is finally a thing!!)

Creatures you control have haste and must attack each turn at random, if able.

Attacking creatures you control get +1/+1.

Whenever you attack with three or more creatures, you may discard a card at random. If you do, draw two cards.

2/2

No longer does she have a very weak tribal build, and instead focuses on boosting attackers. You don't get to choose how creatures attack, but you do get benefits for them doing so.

Really reigns in their whimsical and eccentric nature. Satyr are supposed to be hedonists, so it makes sense for them to cause a ruckus and inspire rioting.

Flee from Influence

Instant

Two target creatures controlled by the same player fight each other. Then, if either of the creatures didn't die, for each of them that didn't die, randomly choose a player from among its controller's opponents. That Player gains control of that creature.

Acts of Violence don't end fights every time. In these cases, running away sure does.

Create a legendary satyr that takes the Party mechanic and turns it into a parteeey. Bonus point for some synergy with Gallia of the Endless Dance .
