I'm building a Warden of the First Tree Rule: 0 deck and want to focus on methods of adding / changing his subtype so I can bypass the mana costs for his activated abilities. So far I have identified four cards.

I can always use graveyard help to get any of these back if I need to. There's also Fendeep Summoner which could theoretically make him a Warrior, but I'd first need to turn him into a land. Usually doing so will remove his abilities, so that's a no-go. I'd also need to change the subtype into Swamp for this combo to work. Too many moving parts so it's not worth it.

Are there really no other cards that do this? If it's just the three or four, I won't spend the time building the deck. I was hoping there would have been more.

I see that none of his abilities last "until end of turn", so they should all be permanent boons. I was just wondering if there were ways around this. You know, because when he is removed from play, I'd have to then pay a ton of mana back into his abilities over and over again. I was hoping there were ways to basically passively keep his subtype changed / added to, thereby bypassing the costs entirely.

Hi,

Looks pretty spiffy :) There's a just a few cards I would recommend:

  • Skinshifter; great value considering its ridiculously low casting cost.
  • Abzan Beastmaster; in this deck nigh guarantee to draw an extra card during your upkeep.
  • Disowned Ancestor; again, great value for next to nothing.
  • Fendeep Summoner; two trees for the price of one :)
  • Ikra Shidiqi, the Usurper; high toughness + life-gain when your creatures damage opponents.
  • Behind the Scenes; wonderful way to make all your creatures unblockable to things that can hurt them.
  • Meekstone; a great way to disable lots of opposition (works especially well if you can manage to give all your stuff vigilance).

Hope you have fun with this. I would appreciate some feedback on one of my decks if you have the time. Happy gaming!

Ikra Shidiqi, the Usurper is not a Treefolk, but she can definitely help you out; your high-toughness creatures will give you lots of life when they swing. Tower Defense gives you protection from flyers, and if you have Assault Formation on the field, it essentially gives all of your guys +5/+5 until the end of the turn for 2 at instant speed, which is insane. Behind the Scenes is basically a cheaper (and sometimes better) version of Cover of Darkness for this deck. Orchard Warden is essentially doubling your lifegain here, which is always good. Black Poplar Shaman is one of the better black Treefolk, up there with Fendeep Summoner. I'd recommend Harmonize, Sign in Blood, and Read the Bones for card draw and Brave the Sands to make your Treefolk wall even more impenetrable. Also, if you want more tribal boosts, consider cards like Metallic Mimic.

Now for cards that you can afford to take out! Maelstrom Pulse is not really great here for two reasons: 1, it's expensive, and 2, it's not ideal for Commander since every deck can only run one of each card. The removal that you already have should be plenty. Argothian Treefolk is really not that great unless you have a friend or person in your playgroup who always runs artifacts, and even then, it's a little too specific to be worth a spot in your deck. Black Oak of Odunos is okay, but it can probably be removed to make room for stronger cards. Tilling Treefolk is like Argothian Treefolk; too specific to be useful in these circumstances.

Good luck in your deckbuilding endeavors!

I love obscure tribal decks, but I feel like you could do better with some of the Treefolk - Battlewand Oak and Cloudcrown Oak, and to a lesser extent Black Poplar Shaman and Weed-Pruner Poplar, seem underwhelming. I'm not saying they're bad in a tribal deck that produces gobs of mana, but there's a couple more powerful treefolk I'd recommend putting in instead. Nemata, Grove Guardian, Ghoultree, Fendeep Summoner, Weatherseed Treefolk, and Ebony Treefolk would all be worth consideration. You could also cut some of the noncreatures to add these to increase the chances of Colfenor proccing. Finally, I really think your deck needs boardwipe of some kind - it's a necessity in Commander to have at least one or two outs in case someone is doing something more ridiculous than you are. Languish is good because it's somewhat one-sided for you, but you probably want something like Life's Finale and/or Nevinyrral's Disk as well. +1 from me!

What about Forbidding Watchtower and Fendeep Summoner?

I would cut Dauntless Dourbark, Dungrove Elder, Fendeep Summoner, mostly because you don't have to lands to support them as of now.But really though, you're splitting your mana three ways. In a mono color deck, I'd be less quick to ask you to omit those cards.

Fortified Rampart, Tree of Redemption, Wall of Tanglecord, are just fat blockers, with a sometimes useful ability with the tree. And you can probably forgo Rolling Stones for an anthem.

Indomitable Ancients and Oakgnarl Warrior are fat, but make no board impact coming down.

Bar the Door and Tower Defense leave me unimpressed.

These are just a few suggestions. Other than that, always a fan of Doran!
