Enshrouding Mist

Instant

Target creature gets +1/+1 until end of turn. Prevent all damage that would be dealt to it this turn. If it's renowned, untap it.

Thank you all for your responses!

TypicalTimmy — I was unclear about format; I apologize. I've updated the original post to specify 60-card constructed. These decks I'm designing are for my family, who are all just learning. At some point I'd like to convert them into EDH decks, but I don't want to overwhelm them with the inherent complexity of EDH just yet!

I agree with you about blocking. I'd prefer something that works not only when they're attacking, but if I'm on the defense as well. That said, Protection does have the downside of requiring instant speed, due to how Protection interacts with "all creatures able to block do so". It also doesn't work as well against multicolored decks if it's Pro [color], whereas it doesn't protect against non-creature threats in the case of Spare from Evil . But otherwise, it's probably the strongest, because it grants effective Hexproof and Unbockable in addition to damage prevention.

I agree about Regenerate, too. I was leaning away from it due to having to pay each time.

Demarge — I would agree with you in an EDH game, where you'll have fewer combats but bigger swingy ones. But if my son sits down with me one-on-one with a basic 60-card deck, I'd want this deck to be able to stay viable through multiple combats. One way that'll happen is by having a Lure and a couple other creatures, and slowly chipping away at the opponent's life total. But if the Lure dies in the first combat, that strategy won't work. I could include a critical mass of Lures to ensure there's always one in hand to replace one that died.... but that would take just as many, if not more, slots as adding in protection.

And if the whole family plays a multiplayer game, you don't want your Lures dying, because you actually want to slowly accrue them until you have one per opponent.

Icbrgr — Seems we're all in agreement that Regenerate is not the best choice!

Re: Fog effects, what about ones that don't specify combat damage? Examples: Djeru's Resolve , Enshrouding Mist , and Shielded Passage for Instants; and Heart of Light and Inviolability for Auras.

My very first deck was in Theros and it was a sultai delve deck. After that I got a Selesnya Renown deck that my brother hated because of the card Enshrouding Mist. But my favorite color is red and I love and still play Izzet Control with splash black for Nicol Bolas

I would reccomend Enshrouding Mist. Also, I would swap out Dragon Hunter for Cenn's Tactician.

Nice brew so far! First thing I'd do is replace Jump and Enshrouding Mist with more powerful cards with similar effects. Maybe Leap and Flickering Ward? What issues are you having with this deck?

Made a couple adjustments. Took out the Dragon Hunter and added one Inspiring Call, one Odric, Lunarch Marshal and one Dromoka Warrior. Also, got a few Enshrouding Mist for sideboard.

If you're wanting more control:

Celestial Flare (I know, I know), Clash of Wills, Declaration in Stone, Disperse (Maybe?), Expose Evil?, Grasp of the Hieromancer, Press for Answers?, Psychic Rebuttal?, Send to Sleep?, Swift Reckoning?,

Enshrouding Mist would be interesting for protection.

Epiphany at the Drownyard could be interesting for CA and of course delerium.

Vessel of Ephemera might be ok.

Moorland Drifter?

Don't like Enshrouding Mist one bit. I would also prefer to see less Pacifism. I feel having that removal is just better. But I do like Pacifism as a potential 2 of. Stasis Snare would be a good instant speed option. As well as Grasp of Darkness. The mists really isn't doing anything but preventing a Fiery Impulse. Who cares. Or you could use Read the Bones to get some card advantage.

And I would like to see Ayli as at least 3 of. Face, it, she will probably die and you will want a replacement Ayli.

Knight of the White Orchid is just better than the lieutenant. It provides an advantage. And the lieutenant isn't actually doing that.

Your sideboard is full of nonsense, honestly. I'd like to see 1 more Anguished Unmaking because it's a great card against ramp and control.

Here's what my sideboard would be.

1x Anguished Unmaking2x Languish2x Infinite Obliteration1x Virulent Plague1x Ob Nixilis Reignited2x Silkwrap1x Ultimate Price2x Transgress the Mind1x Tragic Arrogance2x Dark Petition

First of all:ajstorey456 no need forZada, Hedron Grinder doesn't help me because I don't have any Titan's Strength or Taigams Strike (which is too much mana) or Glint or Center Soul or Enshrouding Mist or Lithomancer's Focus or Mighty Leap or Strength of Arms or Brute Strength or Kindled Fury or Rush of Adrenaline or Sure Strike or anything like that in my deck......There I built you your own Zada deck go make it

Second: I tested Elusive Spellfist it's not as good as Gudul Lurker for Immediate Damage

Thanks tho
