Drudge Beetle

Creature — Insect

Scavenge (, Exile this card from your graveyard: Put a number of +1/+1 counters equal to this card's power on target creature. Scavenge only as a sorcery.)

When selecting the cards to put in your deck you have to be aware of your mana curve, currently over 30% of your spells has a CMC of 5 or more and you have no mana acceleration, so you will find yourself stuck with expensive spells without enough mana to cast them very often.

To help fix the mana issues i would cut both Plague Beetle and Caustic Caterpillar to add a set of Sakura-Tribe Elder, he helps you ramp to your big insects and adds more lands on the board to help Scute Mob do their thing. I would also cut both Asceticism and Pincher Beetles for a set of Cultivate/Kodama's Reach.

I would also cut the 3 Bond Beetle for another Scute Mob and 2 Vorapede. Drudge Beetle is a card that does very little, it's just a 2/2 with an extremely overcosted scavenge, so i would swap them for Deadbridge Goliath.

Another good card for this deck is Swarmyard, i would cut 4 Swamp for it without thinking twice.

Those changes leave you with a mono green mainboard, maybe you should drop the and go with Beast Within, Acidic Slime and Caustic Caterpillar for removal on the sideboard. Other good sideboard options: Tree of Redemption, Prey Upon, Harmonize

You have to make some cuts somewhere, which means you will have to make the tough decisions to cut some very good cards.

Welcome to the world of Magic deck building.

If I were you I'd make my plan to win:

put cards in my graveyard + get back the most powerful ones = get big Creatures on the field early to smash face + get cards in hand that destroy Opponent Creatures

A secondary idea is to Regenerate as many of your Creatures as you can. You may have to drop this secondary idea to get your number of cards to 60.

Cards that fall outside that equation, such as ones that make your Opponent discard cards, will have to go.

I would ditch these ones:

Provoke
Ranger's Guile
Hypnotic Cloud
Mind Rot
Nightsnare
Duress (I KNOW, it's a bloody good card, but something has to go and it doesn't fit the theme)
I'm iffy about Rakshasa's Secret - it fits the theme but you've got so many other ways of putting cards into your Graveyard. You don't want to end up milling yourself
Deathreap Ritual
Drudge Beetle
Elvish Aberration
Liliana's Specter (keep this if your Opponent has a lot of fliers)
Necromancer's Assistant - body is too weak

Those to me are the clear cuts.

You will also need to look at cards with conflicting aims - some of them need to Delve, which removes cards from your Graveyard, whereas others get bigger the more Creatures or other cards you KEEP in your Graveyard.

My feeling on this is probably to ditch the ones that get bigger depending on the number of cards in your 'yard. This is because, with the amount of cards you will be discarding, you should be able to play your Delve cards quite early.

You need to get rid of 10 more cards to make the deck 36 Non-Land cards. Then add 24 Lands.

Be careful when Delving to keep four cards with different types, to get Delerium bonuses.

I hope that has helped a bit.

At the very least you can see how I chose cards, and can do that for yourself if you decide to build a different way.

cameronhawk2Hi! So I want to start with thanking you for all the suggestions, I am always looking for tip and support :). On that note though, I do already have a sacrificing deck where Savra, Queen of the Golgari is actually my commander so I was looking with this deck to kind of stay clear of sacrificing with this deck. Just because when I make a deck I like to kind of have a theme, so I won't be taking some of your suggestions.... for THIS deck, but I will look into it for my Savra deck :). I am just weird like that lol.

In regards to the Deadbridge Goliath, Slitherhead and Drudge Beetle, Varolz, the Scar-Striped will make their scavenge cost cheaper and I want the Slither and Beetle in for low cost creatures at the start of the game. Rather Varolz doesn't actually make the cost cheaper but adds another scavenge ability to them which is their converted mana cost. BUT! I am actually looking into getting Death's Shadow and Eater of Days (however Phyrexian Dreadnought is just too expensive for me to reasonably purchase at this point), they are actually in my maybeboard just because I don't own them and won't be getting them until at least next month.

I will definitely look into Meren of Clan Nel Toth as well! Looks fun. Unfortunately about the Entomb it is the same thing as with the Dreadnought, just too expensive. I did put in Buried Alive and Jarad's Orders as cheap alternatives however. I might look into Regrowth as well just because it is cheap but otherwise I think I am fine with graveyard return cards. I have Grim Discovery, Dread Return, Creeping Renaissance, Nature's Spiral, Life from the Loam, Animate Dead, Treasured Find, Deadbridge Chant as well as a few creatures that bring either other creatures or land back to my hand from the graveyard.

I think you are right though. I don't really need the Primal Vigor and I need more full board removal. Currently my only Black Sun's Zenith is in another deck but I will get another one since they are not expensive and I have a Gaze of Granite I will put in as well.

Thanks for all the tips and advice!

So, I clicked on deck builder because i wanted to search for some decks and when i scrolled down i say Varloz as your commander, and that immediately grabbed my attention because I too have a deck with him as my commander. You should check it out http://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/the-sacrifical-scavenger/

Please do note you do not have to take these considerations to heart, do what you want with the deck and most of all have fun. However saying that I have some things that might help.

Not only that but some decisions I would like to inform you about when going into this deck. Get rid of all creatures with scavenge such as Deadbridge Goliath, Slitherhead, and Drudge Beetle. The reason being is your commander already gives scavenge and at lower costs then the actual scavenge cost of the card. In return replace them with Death's Shadow and Phyrexian Dreadnought They might be more money but they work really well with your commander. I would not recommend Eater of Days though. He has too high of a mana cost for the theme of this deck. It didn't really work in my deck, and I still need to get rid of him.

I would also take out Primal Vigor you already put Doubling Season and Corpsejack Menace you don't need one more card that buffs your tokens with the downside of your enemy getting stronger as well.

Now with those cards gone (if you took into account my tips) one more problem I confronted when playing this deck was removal, If your enemy did end up getting a boat load of creatures on their field this deck can't really cope to well against that. So you should think about adding spells like Black Sun's Zenith or Languish on the cheap side. Damnation on the more expensive side. But you now must be thinking "oh, but that kills my creatures as well" that's the thing you just add some spells which bring em back.

Getting on with that I noticed you didn't have Meren of Clan Nel Toth in your deck which is a must have in this deck amazing card you need. and since you already have Reanimate you should think about getting Entomb which is a sick combo for turn two if you draw right. Or maybe a card like Victimize might help. Then you should add more cards which can bring back cards from the graveyard, cards such as Regrowth

Now for combos in general:Ghoulcaller Gisa great card for this deck buff a minion boop 2 billion zombiesGenesis destroy it, or entomb it, get creatures back for 3 everyturn is coolDen Protector buff it up, nobody can block it, also a morph card to get some cards back pretty coolSavra, Queen of the Golgari combos well for scaraficing creatures to then scavenge them.and many more.

It would be the easiest to check out my deck and look at some of the cards in there.Happy playing!

Alright, let's say that I have a Beastmaster Ascension with seven quest counters on the field and a Slitherhead in the graveyard. If I use the Slitherhead's Scavenge ability to put counters on a Drudge Beetle (or anything), would the Beastmaster Ascension cause the Slitherhead to give 6 +1/+1 counters or would it still only give 1?

There are many problems with the deck. First replace the two Drudge Beetle with Slitherhead and Golgari Longlegs with Deadbridge Goliath and add more varolz and add in a playset of Hardened Scales
