Dragon Whisperer Discussion

I did play around with Vessel of Volatility for a while. I never really got it to work - and someone explained why to me.

If you want to play and use it on Turn 4, you'd be better off using 4 mana to play something else.

When it comes down on Turn 2, you could be playing a better 2 drop for your deck. In your case, that could be Dragon Hatchling or Dragon Whisperer

I mean try it - but honestly evaluate whether it is giving you an advantage.

I remembered some other cards that might be good for this build.

Crux of Fate - if you play this card and it board wipes I demand that you say "boom!" to your Opponent. 3 copies in the Sideboard.

Palace Siege - bring your Dragons back. No more than 2 copies.

Whip of Erebos - constantly gain life with your dead Creatures. 2 or 3 copies in the Sideboard. Not if you are already using Palace Siege

Stormbreath Dragon - my favourite Dragon of all time. Control decks hate her. They can't easily board wipe her and she punishes them for drawing so many cards.

Plus she can become HUGE!

i don't know if i am a good deck builder, but maybe replace Dragon Hatchling with Dragon Whisperer

Removing the following, some I may re-add when I get them, others would just be better as legit mana sources

High CMC, non-dragon

Zirilan of the Claw -> Boros Signet

Low impact, non-dragon

Dragon Whisperer -> Golgari Signet

Signet would almost always do a better job

Dragonspeaker Shaman -> Gruul Signet

Signet would almost always do a better job

Dragonlord's Servant -> Izzet Signet

A little pricey ($), might be more durable as a signet anyway

Sarkhan, Fireblood -> Rakdos Signet

Need colored mana

Homeward Path -> Mountain

Just forgot to order him

Dragonlord Kolaghan -> Dragon Broodmother

Well, if you're still looking for other low-cost dragon related cards, Dragonlord's Servant and Dragonspeaker Shaman seem excellent ways to both have creatures early and to ramp (although the latter is sadly not Modern legal). Dragon Whisperer may be Mythic Rare, but is still very cheap. Dragonmaster Outcast would be great for you, but may be out of your budget.

I would say this is an example of a mythic that doesn't feel mythic. For example, Dragon Whisperer from Tarkir block:

Dragon Whisperer
Creature - Human Shaman (Mythic)

: Choose one:

  • ~ gets flying until end of turn
  • ~ gets +1/+1 until end of turn

Formidable - If you control creatures with total power 8 or more at the beginning of combat on your turn, ~ loses all other abilities this turn and becomes a 5/5 flying Dragon creature with "When this creature attacks, it deals 5 damage to target non-Dragon creature".

I had a Standard Rakdos deck with Dragon Tempest in it.

Once I was playing against this bloke with a Modern deck and he played a card that meant no combat damage could be dealt to him, then leaned back and smirked.

I played Dragon Tempest then proceeded to load the board with Dragon after Dragon. Dragon Whisperer helped immeasurably with that.

He died. RIP

I know what you're saying but you're missing a lot of what makes this deck work.

All it has to do is hold on until the mid game. Then things get all kinds of awful for my Opponent.

You're looking at one very specific piece, but that is only part of the whole.

I have actually explained how things work in my "How to Play" but, since you seem unconvinced, I will set out the game plan a bit clearer.

Defenders, things that kill early Creatures. Card filtering.

More defenders, early fliers, better removal, late game set up (ramp and draw). 4/4 Dragon that can block or attack.

Dragon rush either through 6/6 or Sarkhan. Draw. Direct damage.

Dragons fly. Werewolves don't.

I don't think Werewolves had anything like a recurring spell that deals four damage to a Creature.

For all the things that Arlinn Kord  Flip did she didn't make 5/5 fliers.

All the filtering and draw is what makes this deck pretty much hit its 6/6 every game.

Apologies if I sound curt. It's late and I'm tired.

Looks fun for sure!

I'm not sure though about running Black just for Broodmate Dragon.
Descent of the Dragons or Dragon Whisperer seem better. Or maybe Sarkhan Vol.

Or there's always Garruk Wildspeaker.

@ Kragmork This deck looks super dope! I love mono red decks like these and after playtesting yours for a while, it seemed really fun and powerful! However, I do have a few (budget) suggestions to make. First of all, I would add a sideboard. This is really important to have in modern and it doesn't take long to make. I'm not gonna elaborate further, but if you don't know what I mean, just Google "mono red sideboard modern" and a lot of detailed information will show up! In regards to your mainboard, I think you should should probably cut at least a Stone Rain and a Goblin Dark-Dwellers. Stone Rain is just outclassed by Molten Rain and I feel like Goblin Dark-Dwellers are just too expensive to justify running a full playset. In their place, I would add a fourth Dragon Whisperer (such a great card) and another Mountain to help improve the consistency of your deck! I would also consider running 1-2 Sarkhan, the Dragonspeaker in your mainboard as another finisher and ferocious enabler, although I don't know what you would cut for him. While expensive, a playset of Lava Spike would be something to consider as it provides you with more burn and a way to kill those opponents who have just stabilized at low life. Anyways, this is a solid deck and you are off to a great start in modern! Good luck!
