Hey bud. I'm a big dragon fan, and am trying play dragons in modern. However I run into a few issues mainly being Blue/black control, aggro control, and white blue control. I wish more people would try and run dragons. Some suggestions I have...

Thunderbreak Regent pretty taxing for your opponents to remove.

Rhythm of the Wild good sideboard piece in my opinion against white blue counter.

Draconic Roar great removal piece for that benefits off of the dragon tribe. Good way to grind down your opponent.

Haven of the Spirit Dragon Good land for dragon fixing, but often more useful for bringing dragons back from graveyard.

Notable Dragons to mention... Lathliss, Dragon Queen Demanding Dragon Utvara Hellkite Dragon Whisperer (love this card so much for all it's options. It can even become a threat all on it's own)

Looks like you have a couple ways to cheat your dragons out, but you might want more of a ramp to get to them. Mana dorks can be a good choice, but a lot of aggro decks will take them out quick. Theoretically I like to have my dragons ramped out by at least turn 4-5. Anyways great build man. Hope it works out. I'd love to see dragons make more of a return in modern!

No problem. I enjoy going through the first cycle tab to offer input where I can. I'm used to playing on lower budgets and power levels so I don't usually have much to offer when it comes to long established decks.

Also, on the subject of mana curve, it's worth remembering that the purpose of ramp is to drag the top end back to the left. A bomb most other decks would have to play on turn 6, you plan to play on 5, 4, or even 3 instead. Obviously the more big cards you run, the more ramp will be needed to support them. That's why Gruul dragons also tends to run anywhere from 10 to 20 cards dedicated to acceleration. You have a solid starting package with the set of Servants and the Birds (and Sarkhan actually), but adding a couple more ramp pieces could make it easier to run the critical mass of dragons that Atarka and friends need to shine. It could be untap synergy with Utopia Sprawl and Arbor Elf , landfall with Oracle of Mul Daya (budget: Courser of Kruphix ) and Lotus Cobra , or just more generically good dorks and tutors like Somberwald Sage and Harrow . A turn 1 Bird into Somberwald on 2 potentially lets you cast any creature in the deck as soon as turn 3. If you do want smaller dragons instead, Dragonkin Berserker and Dragon Whisperer can get bodies on the board early and hopefully pay out later. The actual dragon options of Slumbering Dragon and Dragon Hatchling are pretty poor inclusions unless you're trying to go hard with Dragon Tempest .

Here's an article from Wizards' own Gavin Verhey with some tips on dragon ramp strategy. Note that the build in question was made for an old standard meta, so there will be some obvious differences to a modern gameplan.

Sarkhan, the Dragonspeaker

Dragonmaster Outcast

Dragon Whisperer

Dragon Roost

Awaken the Sky Tyrant

Dragon Egg

Draconic Disciple

Dragonsoul Knight

So here's an idea. What about morph? Morph creatures are no creature type when they are in the morph state. Then turn it up any time for its morph cost and boom it's a dragon. Theres 7 cards that do this.

Imperial Hellkite

Quicksilver Dragon

Acid-Spewer Dragon

Herdchaser Dragon

Stormwing Dragon

Belltoll Dragon

Shieldhide Dragon

Hey, Dragon Tempest because of Dragons is a good card: haste enabler, repeatable damage to opponent or opponent creature which can be removal and it can be a sac outlet for Eggs with Dragons. It can do a lot for a two drop.

Tempest is busted with Utvara Hellkite doing X damage to a player or creature each time a Dragon is created. Tempest can target and kill your own Egg to trigger Alta. It combos with Nesting Dragon + Alta + land drop to create an Egg, kill that Egg with damage from Tempest, cheat a creature onto the battlefield with Alta and also have a 2/2 Dragon afterwards. Do this interaction once or more in a turn depending on how many land drops/lands you put onto the battlefield or if you dropped a Fetch land.

Consider cutting Dragon Whisperer replacing it with Dragon Tempest ?

I did play around with Vessel of Volatility for a while. I never really got it to work - and someone explained why to me.

If you want to play and use it on Turn 4, you'd be better off using 4 mana to play something else.

When it comes down on Turn 2, you could be playing a better 2 drop for your deck. In your case, that could be Dragon Hatchling or Dragon Whisperer

I mean try it - but honestly evaluate whether it is giving you an advantage.

I remembered some other cards that might be good for this build.

Crux of Fate - if you play this card and it board wipes I demand that you say "boom!" to your Opponent. 3 copies in the Sideboard.

Palace Siege - bring your Dragons back. No more than 2 copies.

Whip of Erebos - constantly gain life with your dead Creatures. 2 or 3 copies in the Sideboard. Not if you are already using Palace Siege

Stormbreath Dragon - my favourite Dragon of all time. Control decks hate her. They can't easily board wipe her and she punishes them for drawing so many cards.

Plus she can become HUGE!

Removing the following, some I may re-add when I get them, others would just be better as legit mana sources

High CMC, non-dragon

Zirilan of the Claw -> Boros Signet

Low impact, non-dragon

Dragon Whisperer -> Golgari Signet

Signet would almost always do a better job

Dragonspeaker Shaman -> Gruul Signet

Signet would almost always do a better job

Dragonlord's Servant -> Izzet Signet

A little pricey ($), might be more durable as a signet anyway

Sarkhan, Fireblood -> Rakdos Signet

Need colored mana

Homeward Path -> Mountain

Just forgot to order him

Dragonlord Kolaghan -> Dragon Broodmother
