Destructive Urge Discussion

DespairFaction on Kalemne is the Best RW Voltron General.

Hey, long time Aurelia player here. Deck looks sweet, I just have a few questions for you. Do you find that you are getting good value from Sword of Light and Shadow? Your creature count seems a bit low, and ive had not great luck with Light and Shadow in low creature count decks. I noticed you're not running sunforger, I know its slow but its so ridiculously powerful if the game goes late. A card you must add is, Mask of Memory its literally the best card draw in boros. Some other things ive thought about in a deck like this are Specter's Shroud and Destructive Urge. Another thing too, I would probably add Balan, Wandering Knight to act as back up commander if Kalemne gets killed too many times. I like the bit of stax that you have going on, helps slow down the other powerful stuff going on. If I get some time (it might be a while) Id like to try this deck out on my channel.

You can check out my Aurelia deck here if you like Weapons of War

Morgothra on Gotcha with Xantcha! (New C18 Commander)

If my rules understanding is correct Errantry on Xantcha should mean they can't attack with other creatures. Destructive Urge and Latulla's Orders also seem fun. I would put Havoc Festival , Sire Of Insanity and other Group Slug cards in there, as you really want to punish everyone as much and as quickly as possible.

Well, in regards to the control-type spells, your first priority is political effects. As in interacting with the players as a player. Vow of Lightning is an easy example of this, but also Racecourse Fury could be a bargaining chip to get others to fight each other. Most recently there's even Frenzied Fugue, which lets you nab anyone's creature, at least for your turn. These type of "forced aggression" and "theft" effects are fairly specific to red (at least when you forget Mind Control and its ilk). That vow card is part of a cycle for good reason though, as white of course has access to numerous Pacifism and Arrest variants, so don't forget those either.

What also isn't unique to red or white, but is certainly prolific in the colors, is land hate. You have access to things like Apocalypse and Razia's Purification to give you some perspective. Now these spells are not aura's, but Destructive Urge is and Custody Battle, when placed on the right creature, might as well be land hate too. You've got Conquer too, but that one's a little high priced mana wise (but it is pretty janky too.

Now as far as the voltron/tokens build, I can say to you the same thing I mentioned to someone else: "the amount of evasion you need is inversely proportional to the amount of removal you intend to play". If you'd going wide with tokens as well as tall from suiting up one creature, it is inherent that you won't play as much removal or need evasion I would think. Really what you need at that point is the recursion and protection effects, because your aggression will demand opponents play their own removal or lose to aggro (which that recursion and protection acts like redundancy for your commander Tiana to boot).

In any case, I would suggest keeping in mind the mana cost of the cards you play, versus the amount of "cheat" spells you have (like Nomad Mythmaker and Replenish). If you want to only cheat out Eldrazi Conscription (or similar cards) then you could build around that, but having the back-up plan to hard cast it with ramp is also a safe bet.

As another small thing, curses are auras too. wink*

There are not nearly enough draw engines, too many trample enablers. Arlinn Kord  Flip is strong, but unnecessary. Her +1/+1 trample anthem takes two turns to go off and the rest of her abilities (aside from her ult) have zero synergy. Gruul War Chant is less expensive and gives a better pay off immediately. You don't need a trample static buff, when everyone already has trample. Hazoret's Monument gives a reduction in CMC for cast spells, but the discard/draw effect is a gamble and unnecessary compared to a simple draw engine, which actually gives you card advantage (i.e. Soul of the Harvest). Tana, the Bloodsower may have trample, but at 4 CMC for a 4/4 (post swing) is not really that much kick. Something Faster could be put in it's place. Mina and Denn, Wildborn is just a 4 cost Azusa, Lost but Seeking, and the trample effect is redundant. For 7 CMC Pelakka Wurm is weak in value, compared to other high CMC cards that could be ran. Fanatic of Xenagos is cheap, but aside from being a fatty (with or without haste) it's kind of a one note card, there's already enough big creatures on the field, he doesnt bring anything to the table aside from strength. Skarrg Guildmage is redundant as is Khenra Charioteer. Atarka, World Render is not worth the seven, sure she hit's hard but is not as strong as double damage cards that buff ALL your creatures. Deus of Calamity has to be blocked by a creature with 2 or less toughness, otherwise he's not doing anything. Ghor-Clan Rampager is just a titanic growth. Slith Predator is boring, a +1/+1 counter is not much. There is not nearly enough draw in here, too many trample enablers, too few value cards, not enough bombs. Why have so much ramp, when there is too little draw, and not enough high CMC value cards? You removed gold cards from my schematics like Genesis Wave, Rage Reflection, Insult, Gruul War Chant, Elemental Bond, Soul of the Harvest, Rapacious One, Moldgraf Monstrosity, Lurking Predators, Garruk's Horde, Hunter's Prowess, Veilstone Amulet, and Harvest Season. The utter lack of value, draw power, and game ending cards is my only skepticism. That being said, I think Gruul Keyrune, One with Nature, Destructive Urge, and Hellkite Tyrant would be great additions. Also, why 37 lands?

Hey there,

Excellent work on the Uril deck! I run one myself and it's a ton of fun. I gotta say, I love the Bear Umbra + Aggravated Assault; need both to keep the juggle going, but good god that's gotta be fun to pull off.

Anyway, here's a few cards you may want to consider!

Evasion/Trample

These are low cmc cards to help get past creatures to trample right through them.

  1. Asha's Favor
  2. Gryff's Boon
  3. Giant Spectacle
  4. Shield of the Oversoul
  5. Messenger's Speed
  6. Mob Mentality
  7. Imposing Visage
  8. Primal Frenzy
  9. Tilonalli's Crown

Utility

These I like because they help remove a blocker. Potentially can be chucked considering the amount of evasion and trample, but once and a while someone has something that is worth tapping or preventing from blocking.

  1. Cartouche of Zeal
  2. Grasp of the Hieromancer
  3. Hammerhand

Removal

NV_1980 had some good suggestions, as did others. I've got some more :)

  1. Cataclysm
  2. Wildfire
  3. Hull Breach
  4. Destructive Revelry
  5. Destructive Urge
  6. Chandra's Ignition, +1
  7. Razia's Purification, +1

Ramp

Not sure how you're doing on mana, but it never hurts to get more! Keep in mind utility enchantments help boost Helm of the Gods and others.

  1. Land Tax
  2. Exploration
  3. Fertile Ground
  4. Trace of Abundance
  5. Utopia Sprawl
  6. Wild Growth

Enchantment Protection

  1. Fountain Watch
  2. Sterling Grove

Hope some of the suggestions help. Again, cool deck. Hope you have fun smashing people's faces in!

It comes to my mind more suff that trigger when you attack Captain's Claws, Goblin Rabblemaster, Hero of Bladehold, Brimaz, King of Oreskos, Launch the Fleet, Soltari Champion, Accorder Paladin, Goblin Wardriver, Hero of Oxid Ridge, Wingmate Roc, Frontline Medic, Firemane Avenger.

Or when they deal combat damage Prophetic Flamespeaker Skeleton Key, Mask of Memory, Rogue's Gloves, Specter's Shroud, Destructive Urge, Markov Blademaster, Slith Ascendant, Blinding Angel, Falkenrath Marauders and any of the "sword of A and B".

And more Extert Angel of Condemnation, Tah-Crop Elite, Glorybringer.

I'm always looking for a Boros deck to run the Sunforger too bad you have so few instants.
Card draw is hard in Boros, so I'd also try to use Staff of Nin, The Immortal Sun together with the Ghirapur Orrery you already included.

I hope you find something useful among these cards.

Eltee on Watch the World Burn

By another Destructive Urge? Ive honestly never seen another with this deck yet. I suppose if I ever cave and buy a Crucible of Worlds it could be a potential counter, as well as expand my "looting" abilities. Any ideas on ways to counter it early game, besides burn spells/blocking?
