Demon's Grasp Discussion

TypicalTimmy on Card creation challenge

So unfortunately I've never seen The Greatest Showman, and I don't want to try and make a card based on something I am unfamiliar with. So I will reissue the challenge.

The actual reason I am making this post is I had an oddly vivid dream of an Ob Nixilis Planeswalker and I'd like your guy's opinion on how OP it is.

Basically in my dream, I was drafting a deck and ended up pulling this new Ob and spent a good minute or so looking at it. When I woke up, that image sort of seared in my head for a while. I was debating on holding onto it until an appropriate challenge was issued, but I think I'd forget it by then, haha.

Ob Nixilis, Resurgence

(The artwork was of similar nature to Demon's Grasp, but instead of focusing on the victim, it focused on Ob Nixilis choking the life out of what appeared to be Nissa)

Legendary Planeswaker - Nixilis

+1 You draw 2 cards and lose 2 life.

-3 Destroy target creature or Planeswalker.

-7 You get an emblem with "Creatures you control have: : Sacrifice this creature. Destroy target creature."

4

So, immediately this card is very reminiscent to Ob Nixilis Reignited, even in the name. To me, his +1 seems obscenely powerful but at the same time if it's good enough to be printed three times as commons in the ways of Sign in Blood, Read the Bones, and Night's Whisper than it's good enough for a +1.

His -3 is obviously an increased variant of the old card.

But that -7. I honestly can't tell if that is OP and broken as hell, or a crapshoot. I mean obviously in Zombies where you get tons and tons of tokens, yes it is game breaking. But you'd have to build a deck around the Planeswalker, rather than the Planeswalker helping an already powerful deck.

I don't know. Like I said, I had a very vivid dream and wanted to share it with you guys. Oh, btw, I don't recall the set name but it had a very Dragon's Maze kind of vibe to it :/

Anyway, thanks for listening. Same challenge.

Create your second (Or first) favorite character from The Greatest Showman.

Demon's Grasp is pretty bad, I'd play Dismember over it any day.

Everything in the Nicol Bolas planeswalker deck is Standard legal. I believe that only a handful of cards in the Ob Nixilis deck (Ob Nixilis Reignited, Carrier Thrall, Demon's Grasp, and Altar's Reap) are Standard legal.

This looks like a great way to start! It looks like you've gotten the basics of deck building and you're on your way!

If you want to start improving your deck, I'd suggest deciding where you'd like to focus. It looks like you lean towards control, which has a lot of cards that disrupt your opponent (Bone Splinters, Demon's Grasp, Mind Rot among cards in your deck) and lots of cards that draw more cards for you, but the biggest difference is most control deck focus more on disrupting your opponent than playing creatures (some control decks have no creatures, but you won't go that far). Then, when a control deck does play a creature, it's usually a big, scary creature (Nightmare, Sphinx of Magosi) that they try to protect and keep on the board.

If you don't like the idea of cutting many creatures, you can always go the midrange route. Midrange plays lots of creatures on curve, usually trying to get big creatures out on turns 3-5 and pressure their opponents with them. In that case, I could certainly suggest some creatures.

Lastly, are you going to stick with standard? If you want to play sanctioned, it's not a bad idea, but if you only play countertop, I suggest playing casual format where your card pool is much bigger.

If you have any questions, let me know!

Just a few ideas, it seems you play casually so the cards here are from all different kinds of sets:

Max out (4x) on Mortuary Mire.

Replace Daggerdrome Imp by Zulaport Cutthroat, it has more certainty to deal damage and gain you life then the imp.

Replace Mind Rot (you don't have any other discarding cards so it's annoying for your opponent but it doesn't help you win the game) and Unholy Hunger (mana cost too high) with Doom Blade, it's great and easy removal (instant!).

Then you can remove Demon's Grasp with Languish, it's 1 mana cheaper, and targets all your opponent's creatures to clear the board easily.

Not sure about the other creatures yet, i'll check in later!

Well the benefit of playing mono-black is you get to use all the good removal that takes 2BB. So you might as well go 4x Grasp of Darkness and Murder over the other removal cards like Throttle, Demon's Grasp and Bone Splinters.

Also being one color means you don't need mana fixing, so drop the Prophetic Prism. In your deck it's just pay 2 to replace itself.

Maybe some vehicles with smaller crew cost would be nice like Smuggler's Copter, Renegade Freighter or Sky Skiff. Then go with 4x Night Market Lookout and 4x Vampire Envoy.

I agree more creatures would be good. Especially if you have cards that need to return one from the graveyard. I like Mindwrack Demon for ya there.

Good luck!
