Cunning Survivor Discussion

inkstorm on Cycling for Lethal

I'd reconsider a mono-blue deck that relies entirely on Cunning Survivor to win. It has 2 cmc (Fatal Push), doesn't gain toughness while cycling, and only gains 1 attack per cycle. Most decks will straight outrace you or simply save their counters/removal.

Drake Haven would add value and bodies for every cycle while adding another way to win for the deck. I'd still be worried going mon-blue though.

Proven Combatant is a bad card so don't play him. He's worthless early, over-costed as a vanilla 4/4 for 6, and is quite possibly the worst draw late game.

Vizier of Tumbling Sands doesn't make sense. Nothing in your deck makes use of his tap ability so he's a vanilla 2/3 for 3. I understand you want a 3 drop, but it won't deal damage nor block effectively. Striped Riverwinder could be a better choice for the cheaper cycling.

First Standard Tournament Results

Round one: W/U control. (Not monument)Game one - Found the combo relatively quick and won. Was concerned about about my Cunning Survivor getting tapped by his Fan Bearer but luckily he was tapped out when New Perspectives entered the battlefield.Game two - Sided in Countervailing Winds for Haze of Pollen. Pulled of the combo again and won.(2-0)

Round two: B/W Zombies.Game one - Got run over fast. Without either combo piece and missed land drops meant the combo flopped.Game two - No sideboard. Had a faster hand but the zombies were too fast. Managed to pull a Haze of Pollen during one attack saving 6 life but a In Oketra's Name from the opponent the next turn killed me.(0-2)

Round three: R/B/U/W/G Planeswalkers.Game one - Seemed pretty even but ended in a lose. The game started slow for both despite the turn three As Fortold by the opponent. I waited a couple of turns before playing New Perspectives while Cunning Survivor was out so that i could afford a Censor.I did pull of the combo but Cunning Survivor only became a 15/3 after i got stuck with three New Perspectives, three Cunning Survivors and four basic lands in hand.Game two = Sided in Shadowstorm Vizier for Haze of Pollen. The second game was not as slow after my opponent used Deploy the Gatewatch and got a Nicol Bolas, God-Pharaoh and a Nissa, Voice of Zendikar out. I played Shefet Monitor to try and kill them but it kept getting blocked by plants. Grrrrrrrrrrrr. game ended when he hit me for seven with Nicol Bolas, God-Pharaoh -4 ability and played another copy of Nicol Bolas, God-Pharaoh and hit for another seven. (yes he did sac the old one.)(0-2)

So the deck went 1-2 overall. I didn't expect much from it but wanted to see what the consistency of the combo was.

I found that i need Supreme Will to protect or dig for New Perspectives. Some removal would be great but there is none with cycling, unfortunately. Control seems to be my LGS's metta at the moment with almost half of the decks being R/B/U bolas control. For this reason i'm considering putting Haze of Pollen in the sideboard since it only stops some aggro decks. Also wondering if Canyon Slough and Sheltered Thicket would be worth adding to splash for Sweltering Suns. it would be risky and would remove Beneath the Sands from the deck but would increase the number of cycling cards.

youre gonna need some Weirding Wood or Gift of Paradise to ramp up and get New Perspectives early. then you start cycling and untapping your lands that produces 2 mana thanks to Vizier of Tumbling Sands until you can cast Torment of Hailfire for whatever number you like and win the game...hopefully.

you got me on Cunning Survivor but make sure you make it alive to score the win in addition to Torment of Hailfire. goodluck on your next FNM!

landofMordor Thanks for the comment! I had a lot of trouble on whether or not to keep thew winds in, its definitely more of a control card and I dont know if I'd like to go tempo or control yet. In my testing I found I got a lot more out of the Cunning Survivor than the winds. I have a playset of each so I'll definitley try out subing that in for few test matches. Thanks again man

I would cut your Cunning Survivor for Countervailing Winds or another utility creature. Riddleform is an evasive enough threat that you might not need the additional threat, and that change would boost your cycling percentage, which seems a little low here.

Hour of Devastation has a lot of cycling goodies on the horizon

I'd cut 4 Stir the Sands for 3 Countervailing Winds and 1 Abandoned Sarcophagus to keep the cycle costs low and add long game to the deck. Playing counters from the grave is powerful AF. 4 winds should be in the deck though, but 1 or 2 sarcophgus is enough because drawing more than one is redundant and you go through your deck quickly..Striped Riverwinder should be in the sideboard against control and Nimble Obstructionist should be considered as well, because flashing a 3/1 flyer at end of turn is nice against control too if there are no abilities to counter

Then I'd put wasteland scorpion in the sideboard against aggro and replace him with Hollow One in the main deck

Cunning Survivor or and Vile Manifestation can be Shadowstorm Vizier 5-8 cause who doesn't love more aggro cycling cards. survivor is better though, but vile M. is reliably larger late game though, almost like Tarmogoyf so it is a tough call

Not sure what to cut but this deck could be more aggro or more control after the new set. Depends on if you like things happening at sorcery speed or not.

you can dump your whole hand to dragoon, then use Shadow of the Grave to bring them all back while your team gets pumped.
yah its a little janky, but at least you could go T2 Cunning Survivor, T3 Cunning Survivor T4 Olivia's Dragoon discard your hand (3 cards) and Shadow of the Grave it back, discard the 3 again, and your boys can swing for 14 unblockable on T4.
Just an idea because Forgotten Creation can be a little slow.

jparker-sartori21 I had considered putting New Perspectives into the deck previously, but even if it draws me 3 cards I find it very unlikely that at the time I will be able to cast it that I will have 7 cards in hand, and if I do, it will only be for a short time, so I don't know if it will be worth it. I have to do more playtesting, but I might end up putting it in. I do understand that it allows Hollow One to be completely free, but there are other ways that I can do that by only paying like 3 or 4 and helping buff my creatures in the process, so I don't know if playing it will really help. I changed from Vile Manifestation to Cunning Survivor because evasion is pretty important and also Vile Manifestation is really bad against graveyard hate. You do bring up a good point that it can be cycled unlike the survivor and I have been going back and forth on this, but again I will playtest and see. Countervailing Winds also has the issue that it does nothing against graveyard hate, but I might see myself taking out the Essence Scatters I have and replacing them with Countervailing Winds. Again playtesting is needed. I will be able to figure out the nuances soon and I may end up putting these cards in. Thank you for your input though I really appreciate it!
