Cunning Survivor

Creature — Human Warrior

Whenever you cycle or discard a card, Cunning Survivor gets +1/+0 and can't be blocked this turn.

Winds would be a good finisher, certainly -- Will have to make room for it, can't believe I forgot it.

A little cycling is fine, but in pEDH there's no really good payoff for cycling aside from some creatures that get big for a turn like Horror of the Broken Lands and Cunning Survivor. That said, cycling is good for just incidental draw/lifegain, especially if you go into something like Drannith Healer who gives you more life gain on top of Queza.

What about instead of the Drannith Bros. you used something like Cunning Survivor and a " rummage " effect?

  1. something like Faithless Salvaging , Epiphany Storm
  2. or make use of creatures that rummage on ETB like Fissure Wizard (fun card name to say lol)
  3. or Flux
  4. Krovikan Sorcerer 's second ability looks kinda promising
  5. Mental Discipline is not a creature, but would need lots of mana. Oona's Grace would also be repeatable once it hits your graveyard, but it's still mana-hungry.
  6. Also note that if your use Brainstorm you could set up your draw, allowing you to use all the blue spells that draw THEN discard like Zephyr Scribe

That's all I could think of so far. Does that help inspire anybody, or am I reaching like usual? Maybe cram it all together and with all that draw you're bound to get Cunning Survivor in a reasonable amount of time?

Thanks for the nice words and feedback! I'm honestly not sure what's up with Circular Logic . I tried changing the printing but it still shows as an illegal card despite it definitely being pauper legal.

I was just talking today with some people who suggested putting in some cycle lands, I wasn't sure if it mattered whether they are Barren Moor or Lonely Sandbar . I will definitely do that though. Makes them way more valuable in late game.

I had thought about Putrid Imp and Aquamoeba but both are pretty vulnerable to ping (amoeba opens up when I activate its ability) and I liked the relatively more hearty Dragoon with the evasion it gives. I settled on Oblivion Crown as the alternate/supplementary engine since it can allow Cunning Survivor and Grisly Survivor to become even more threatening while being a little more difficult to remove (at least that's my inexperienced thought).

I really like the idea of Gorgers for applying pressure but I'm just not sure what to take out for them. Maybe I don't need Duress and Divest in the sideboard, so I can move some removal (of which I have a lot) and put the Gorgers in.

I'm also wondering if I should have some way to draw. Something like the Careful Study I have in the maybe board. It's why I was also considering Looter il-Kor . I've also kicked around the idea of a Thorn of the Black Rose for the draw that comes with Monarch.

Sorry for the lengthy reply and thanks again!

I'd cut Enclave Cryptologist, the level up creatures are just mana sinks and you don't need a mana sink, instead try Magus of the Bazaar. I'd also cut Call the Bloodline and Sinister Concoction for either Zombie Infestation or Haunted Dead and perhaps try to find a space for Cunning Survivor, Nether Traitor or Grave Scrabbler.

Well that's a few suggestions, hope they help, have fun brewing your deck.

You could play some of the cycle lands (Barren Moor, Tranquil Thicket, Lonely Sandbar) for some "free" cycle cards. Also, I think you should go up on the Cunning Survivor/Grisly Survivors so you have the max number of payoffs. Oona's Grace is the slowest and costliest card you're playing, plus it's not very good in multiples, so I'd cut a couple of that.

RobsJourney Crucible of Worlds is really strong with the addition of cycling lands and its very nice being able to discard lands you draw instead of gas, Planar Birth is also really strong for this

At the moment the deck is less focused as I want it to be casual but I could see it being made into either token swarm, draw/mill matters or lifegain so if you wanted to focus the deck around cards like Psychic Corrosion you just need to cut cards from other themes, if you do that I think focusing on tokens with the addition of cards like Bident of Thassa, Kindred Discovery , Coastal Piracy, Psychosis Crawler, Patient Rebuilding, Mindcrank, Altar of Dementia, Altar of the Brood, Undead Alchemist would be good

I am currently focusing on making the deck more self discard focused because its fun as hell and when else would you use Dark Withering, Cunning Survivor or Spirit Cairnbut the lifegain element has actually been incredibly strong so I am looking at making a lifegain shell with cards like Rhox Faithmender,Sanguine Bond, Necromancer's Covenant, Whip of Erebos

This looks fun...keep working on it...Izzet is tricky, must find balance. Bloodmad Vampire and Hekma Sentinels are underwhelming unless you can run some evasion like Slip Through Space or Distortion Strike. I am running a 50% similar build..it's a madness/tempo build using Aquamoeba as a discard outlet: Aqua-Madness. I am considering Cunning Survivor for it (thanks to you!).
