Cubwarden

Creature — Cat

Mutate (If you cast this spell for its mutate cost, put it ontop or underneath target non-Human creature you own. They mutate into the creature that is on top and that creature has all the abilities of every card that is underneath it.)

Lifelink

Whenever this creature mutates, create two 1/1 white Cat creature tokens with lifelink.

The following is an example list i've thrown together. depending on your budget running 4 colours might be a bit tricky, but it shouldn't be too hard to turn this back into a 2-3 colour deck either.

My opinion of the strongest mutate cards, in order from best to worst (some of these won’t be in your colours, but it might be worth considering trying 3-colour if you have lands to support that)

  1. Gemrazer

  2. Parcelbeast

  3. Sea-Dasher Octopus

  4. Cubwarden

  5. Insatiable Hemophage

  6. Trumpeting Gnarr

  7. Glowstone Recluse

Anything not on that list is imo too weak to be worth running. I think a deck with mutate probably wants to be running both Slippery Bogle and Gladecover Scout so the opponent can’t kill the monster you’re building. Between them, the mana-dorks, and the mutate cards, that feels like you’ll be at 60 cards pretty quickly.

I should also say that Open the Omenpaths is good when you need to fix your mana for example to mutate valdrok that costs 2 red or for mutating Cubwarden that costs 2 white

ellie-is — I know, that rat art is so cute! They would be perfect for your deck! I guess look on the bright side.... I've heard the foil Secret Lair cards are extra horrid as far as foils go. Wouldn't do your deck much good if they were so curled they weren't tournament legal! Heh

Thanks for the resource suggestion. I'm totally out of touch with the Modern meta these days, so yeah, I'll check that out and see what sideboards look like these days.

I_Want_To_PlayAllTheDecks — Thanks for the feedback! I love the effect of Kaheera; not so big a fan of the depictions of cats in Ikoria. That said, you're right that there's no reason to not run it, deckbuilding-wise, and since it starts outside the game, maybe I can imagine it as, like, some mystical cat spirit from the spirit world, a la Avatar: The Last Airbender. ;)

As to Cubwarden and Huntmaster Liger, I did actually consider them when I was initially looking at my cat options, but in addition to being the weird Ikoria cats, they're also 4-drops and don't play nice with CoCo. Do you think I should move away from CoCo to open up my options?

abbatromebone — I agree, Feline Sovereign is awesome, and it's a must-run in any full-blown cat deck. But as mentioned in the description, this is specifically a lion deck, so cats like Regal Caracal and Steppe Lynx don't fit in. I realize this flavor decision makes the deck weaker, but I'm fine with that.

CoCo is already in the mainboard, and I'm also already testing out Honor of the Pure. But I had never considered Lead the Stampede before; I'll have to test it. What's the minimum creature count a deck is recommended to have to make Lead worth it? Same as CoCo?

As to lands, would you still recommend me replacing Canopy Vista, even though I don't need the extra fetches for Steppe Lynx?

I would gladly welcome some help with the sideboard! But I don't have a meta right now. I've been out of Modern for a few years, but my playgroup recently decided to try getting into it. So what would you recommend for the sideboard for the overall Modern meta right now? That'll be good enough until I get into a local meta.

So since you have only cats in your main Kaheera, the Orphanguard is a free-roll companion, and a good synergistic one at that. I also thought Cubwarden and Huntmaster Liger could be decent if you want to have a little mutate subtleme instead of the weaker cats currently. They also look a lot like lions(and the alt-art versions are sick).

Gidgetimer on What is considered a spell?

Bloodrush is an activated ability. An object on the stack is a spell if you cast it for its mana cost or if the ability you used specifically said to "cast" the card. Mutate (Cubwarden), Overload (Cyclonic Rift), Suspend (Lotus Bloom), and Bestow (Erebos's Emissary) all cast the card as a spell. Bloodrush (Rubblebelt Maaka), Ninjutsu (Ingenious Infiltrator), Transmute (Muddle the Mixture), and Forecast (Paladin of Prahv) are all abilities.

Needs some Pride Sovereign and some mainboard Kaheera, the Orphanguard for sure, along with Cubwarden. I'd probably cut the scythecats and the prowling felidars for them.

BRG24 on BW Token Lifegain deck

Nice deck. It might be an idea to introduce some more one drops here, preferably with lifelink so you can get the lifegain going early. Healer's Hawk, Vampire of the Dire Moon and Banehound each fit this nicely, and each bring something a little different. Hawk might be useful since you don’t really have many ways of dealing with fliers, the Vampire having deathtouch can scare off a lot of aggression (although might not be necessary, depends how much life you’re gaining), and Banehound offers very strong aggression.

If you’re going for a token deck, Anointed Procession feels like it should be worth considering. However, I feel that at the moment the token elements of this deck are quite slow and expensive. Something like a Leonin Warleader might be a better option, since it makes the tokens without requiring more mana to be put in, plus the tokens have lifelink. Cubwarden does a similar job, with more immediate effect, but you might need to run more non-humans to make it work. Ajani, Strength of the Pride also seems pretty good, since it has a direct lifegain ability that will scale with the size of your board, the ability to make tokens of possibly the best card in a lifegain deck, and an emergency reset button should you ever need it. As a final token card, Crested Sunmare can be great for closing out a game with big, indestructible beaters. Plus, it can make extra tokens if you gain life on your opponents turn as well.

Hope this is helpful to you, and good luck with the deck.
