Courtly Provocateur Discussion

Courtly Provocateur can replace Hunt Down and Sea's Claim can replace Nylea's Presence if you're aiming for making an opponents land an Island. If that's not a case enlighten me for its purpose so I'm not interpreting it wrong. It might slow the deck down slightly due to Courtly Provocateur's mana cost being more than Nylea's Presence, since Sea's Claim has the same converted mana cost as Hunt Down.

MadMadison nope. Just an example ;p (I play it in my Jodah decl). I was looking through some cards and found some good ideas. See if any of these work? Maybe take out some clunky cards for it. BTW not checking to see if you already have these cards. If they are here, then they should be pretty good. 1. Commandeer? --> You have a bunch of draw power, so put it to good use! 2. AEtherspouts? --> Not too sure about this one. I'll test it a bit more and see. 3. Cryptic Command? --> Almost always a good card, especially in mono blue! 4. Cephalid Constable --> More Disruption. I stand by this card and think it's extremely valuable. 5. Latchkey Faerie --> Depends on if you are planning to go tribal heavy or not. 6. Master of Waves --> I think those 2/1s are gonna poke in for a lot of damage. 7. Nimble Obstructionist --> I think the cycle ability is great, but a 3/1 unblockable is also valuable. 8. Phyrexian Revoker --> Good card in general. Also unblockable. Disrupts tempo. 9. Rootwater Thief --> Helps disrupt certain cards in their combo. 10. Surrakar Spellblade --> Amazing for card draw. Also unblockable. 11. Thing in the Ice  Flip --> Good card in general. I think you should use him as one of your finishers in case your board gets blown up. 12. General Comments: - I think you are too creature heavy. I think you can include soft counter spells. For example, Spell Pierce, Spell Snare, and Negate. I think you need less counter spells for creatures (speaking of, use Counterspell and Mana Drain), because the big damage will be coming from spells like Damnation, Wrath of God, Anger of the Gods, etc. I think counter spells will be useful to save your board state. And if a mass removal does resolve, a Thing in the Ice  Flip would be great. Some examples are... - Cyclonic Rift is also great creature disruption with high versatility. - Forbid might be good if you need to dump some cards that u drew. - Stifle is also nice if a creature entered the battlefield and triggered mass removal, like Avacyn, the Purifier.

Another miscellaneous cards could be.. - Mask of Memory --> great card draw!

What you should cut... - Wild-Field Scarecrow - Temporal Adept - Shapesharer and Shape Stealer - Consider Siren of the Fanged Coast even though it did me wonders in that one match. - Courtly Provocateur

That's all I've got for now. Please remember these are just my suggestions. If you implement all of these, it becomes my deck and not yours. So remember, keep what you can justify, and leave what you can't. Incorporate what you see potential in, leave or test the rest. Good luck!

P.S.: I will be back to look at it some more. This deck really intrigues me!

Okay, so many comments here!

I'm probably gonna be prototyping a few decks with each of the different suggested commanders here. I'll post them here when I have a rough outline of each.

Thoughts between Zedruu the Greathearted, Queen Marchesa, O-Kagachi, Vengeful Kami, and just Kazuul, Tyrant of the Cliffs?

Zedruu the Greathearted allows for some cool tricks with cards like Delaying Shield, as well as drawing me cards and gaining back the life I lose from everyone attacking me. Also, gives me Courtly Provocateur-style effects, as well as Riddlekeeper and Isperia, Supreme Judge, both of which seem like some of the best cards in this style of deck.

Queen Marchesa does a lot of things for the deck, and is my top pick as of right now. gives me No Mercy effects, High Priest of Penance (and the Phyrexian Reclamation that would make it great), rattlesnake cards like Ophiomancer, and does a lot herself, such as giving me card draw, or another reason to attack me, and when I'm not the monarch she gives me deathtouchers to make attacking me extra painful.

O-Kagachi, Vengeful Kami gives me all the above mentioned cards, and gives me an attack punisher in the command zone. Not a lot to say about it, other than getting to Vindicate something every turn seems pretty good. Or twice a turn with Fireshrieker. Would also give me an easy actual wincon in commander damage, since it's big and evasive.

Finally, Kazuul, Tyrant of the Cliffs, the card that started this, is probably my last pick since I don't get to play a lot of the cool cards like No Mercy and stuff. However, having one of the best punishers at all times might be the correct choice.

This deck looks sweet, and I really like some of the cards you've got in here (especially Lunar Mystic, never knew an effect like that existed), but I feel the deck is somewhat lacking in direction. You've got some sweet stax pieces (Rising Waters and Ward of Bones), some awesome instant/sorcery support (Lunar Mystic and Disciple of the Ring), along with tons of other cool cards. Overall I think you need to pick a theme and stick to it. There are some cool cards in here that don't really have synergy with the deck (Grozoth, Riddlekeeper and small mill package, and the Donate + Illusions of Grandeur combo).

I don't have that much in the way of suggestions, since I don't know which of your themes you want to focus on. However, here are some things that synergize nicely with your commander. Forcing creatures to block is very powerful with Tromokratis, since it forces them to block with their entire team if possible. In addition, preventing their creatures from blocking or tapping them down basically makes him unblockable, giving you a fairly quick kill. Courtly Provocateur can either make utility creatures attack and die or force creatures to block, making your commander's swing into a pseudo-board wipe. Grappling Hook is a repeatable form of this effect that also grants double strike, turning your commander into an incredibly powerful beater.

Now, on to ways to stop creatures from blocking to make Tromokratis unblockable. Tamiyo, the Moon Sage is a great source of card draw that can also tap down troublesome permanents. Frost Titan, while probably the worst of the titan cycle, is still a troublesome card to deal with, and can lock down permanents. If you're willing to commit to running numerous colorless sources (and you've already got a bunch of colorless rocks), Endbringer can prevent big things from attacking, basically give Tromokratis unblockable, and even give you card draw. Fatestitcher is a great card in mono-blue, since not only does it serve as ramp, it can also tap down problematic stuff at instant speed.

Finally, some general blue good stuff. Cyclonic Rift is one of the best removal spells in the format. Whelming Wave can occasionally serve as a one-sided board wipe. I'm not sure if you have a reason for excluding Sol Ring, but otherwise it definitely should be making the cut.

I think you might want to cut back on some of the non-basic lands you've got in here, even if just to slightly improve the odds on Scrying Sheets. Some of the stuff you've got in here (Magosi, the Waterveil) just seems like a worse island in the vast majority of situations.

Sorry if this comment was overly general, let me know what kind of direction you want to take with the deck and I'll try to give you some more specific suggestions.

Courtly Provocateur might be cool in here, not a zombie, but sick combo with Vedalken Ghoul. Could even use it to ramp Diregraf Captain ability to kill some of your tokens you are making and just make your opponent lose life. Or just make your opponents run into your death touch creatures.

BookerCatch Thanks for the upvote & suggestion but Courtly Provocateur doesn't fit what I want to do with this deck, which is more direct control over creatures.

It will however fit into a couple of other Shakespeare inspired decks that I want to build, so thanks for that. :)

Thanks so much scaesura! I appreciate all your help! I completely forgot about Riptide Laboratory. I like your suggestions for enchantments and artifacts that make my creatures unblockable. Originally I was going to put in some of the cards you suggested like Aqueous Form or Whispersilk Cloak, but I wasn't sure if I would be better off finding a card that gave mass evasion rather than a single creature. I'll take into account your suggestions and play around with my creatures a bit and see what I can do!

lazarusdraigon, as for my wincon, I hate to say that I'm not entirely sure. I know that sounds awful, but I don't see a singular wincon...maybe I'm just not sure how to define it. If anything, I see the potential for a wincon if I attach Freed from the Real or Galvanic Alchemist to Courtly Provocateur, Blinding Mage, or maybe even Archivist. If I can tap my opponent's creatures, I can swing in with Mirror Entity or something that buffs my creatures for a ton of damage.

I hope that was specific enough...if you have any more questions, please ask!
