Canker Abomination

Creature — Treefolk Horror

As Canker Abomination enters the battlefield, choose an opponent. Canker Abomination enters the battlefield with a -1/-1 counter on it for each creature that player controls.

@ king-saproling Thanks for the suggestions, all solid recs! I used to run Soul Snuffers and Midnight Banshee in this deck, I pulled them out a while ago but I do miss them. I hadn't seen Canker Abomination, that rulesssssss. And yeah, Cauldron of Souls in this deck...mamma mia, that's a spicy meatball

Nice list! I really appreciate the sentiment that mtg is for everyone. Personally I'm hoping we get some reprints for many of the $20+ cards out there.

You might like these cards: Cauldron of Souls, Pitiless Plunderer, Black Market, Zulaport Cutthroat, Syr Konrad, the Grim, Helm of the Host, Canker Abomination, Dusk Urchins, Harbinger of Night, Midnight Banshee, Soul Snuffers

Witherscale Wurm taking wither damage won't trigger Hapatra, so there is not much point for him in he deck.

Are you really creating enough tokens to make Bloodflow Connoisseur , Bloodthrone Vampire and Carrion Feeder worthwhile? In my experience with myhapatra deck, the snakes are way to valuable to be sacrificed for a mere +1/+1 counter or +2/+2 until EoT on some creature with no evasion.

Fevered Convulsions , and Gnarled Effigy look terribly unefficient, for mana for a -1/-1 is way too much. I used to run Serrated Arrows and Trigon of Corruption but I ended up cutting them, maybe they could work fine in your deck as you are going strong on Proliferate. Now I'm testing Serrated Biskelion but I'm not completely sold on it, you know you never get to draw the cards you are trying out...

Decimator of the Provinces is also way too costly, even if you emerge it, and all the trouble just for a wide +2/+2 trample; a simple Overrun would give you a better bang for your mana. Predatory Rampage will wipe most of your oponent's creatures and Revenge of the Hunted is a one player board wipe. I also find Loyal Guardian to be an underrated card to spread counters on your creatures.
Canker Abomination will only get you a snake no matter how many counters it gets, so in the best case scenario it would be a 5/5 with one snake for four mana, its not really worth the deck slot. There are many creatures in the Amonkhet block that will do just that but better.

on the evasion department I would definetly cut Tawnos's Wand , Hot Soup has a bit of a drawback, but Hapatra only has toughness 2, so it won't be a big difference anyway and the card is really funny. Trailblazer's Boots is a bit more expensive, but I would still consider it a budget card.

These kind of decks are supper weak against board wipes, so I'd encourage you to include Golgari Charm or Wrap in Vigor .The best card for that task would be Heroic Intervention but it's getting more and more expensive every day.

If you want to check my Hapatra deck, it's this one Hapatra's death hosts

Tested against a few different decks today. A few observations:

1) Necroskitter and Wickerbough Elder are the utility players, completely interchangeable depending on opposing deck. Obviously, Necroskitter against creature-heavy builds, and Elder against creature-light builds. Deck performed fine no matter which was used.

2) Scarscale Ritual is maybe more useful than Fatal Push. I'm leaning this way because I subbed in Ritual, and not having Push made no difference whatever. The deck seems to handle small threats through counters, and card draw was far more beneficial than simply removing smaller creatures.

3) Having a large body like Canker Abomination (a 6/6) makes it easier to manage Blowfly Infestation. Abomination occasionally came in as small as 3/3 but I was able to generate tokens, so not a bad tradeoff. I'm still considering Soulstinger though, because it will also generate tokens but has the added advantage of providing counter distribution upon LTB. I did not use Soulstinger today, though. I assume Stinger and Abomination are equally as interchangeable as Necroskitter and Wickerbough Elder.

More to come, cheers!!

Bitchboideckbuilder, Hapatra's Mark does stop Blowfly Infestation, but I'm not sure I'd want to dedicate the slots to it. I wouldn't want to tutor for Mark, so I'd almost have to dedicate 4x slots to it. I'm keeping Blowfly in for now, as I added 2x Canker Abominations for a 6/6 body... still considering Soulstinger as a counter-dump as well. Canker and Soulstinger both have unique advantages, and I'm planning to try the deck both ways for a bit. Another trial I ran this weekend involved Oona's Gatewarden, for the 1-slot. It ended up making no difference at all, really. With the removal available in this deck, I can (usually) pretty much keep the board in stasis for 2-3 turns, which is plenty of time to get my token engine built. So Gatewarden has been rejected. I'll post with results of trying out Canker and Soulstinger after I get a handful of games in with each. Thanks for checking out my build!

I stand corrected.... I did not realize that "ETB with counters" was considered the same as "place counters on". So Phillygreenman007 you are correct, Canker Abomination would net creatures if board is set-up properly. Cheers!

Phillygreenman007... so I was considering Canker Abomination... in this build it wouldn't net creatures unless I used it as a counter-dump. ETB-with-counters doesn't trigger Hapatra, Vizier of Poisons, or Nest of Scarabs. For a similar effect and same cmc, I could use Soulstinger, which I had considered in the past, but sorta forgot about. When Soulstinger was released, I initially thought it would allow you to target multiple creatures, which it doesn't, however it has great synergy with Nest of Scarabs. I dropped Soulstinger in standard because it was too slow, but it might (big might) be worth a try in this build, especially with Necroskitter in play.
