Caldera Hellion Discussion

SynergyBuild, thanks again for all your suggestions.

I'll test some of those changes the next time I play with this deck (can't use Orcish Lumberjack yet because I don't have it).

My point about Caldera Hellion is that, even though it costs more than the sweepers you've mentioned, it is a creature, and it can be tutored with green tutors (e.g. Chord of Calling and Worldly Tutor, which I'll use in this deck when possible), so I can search for a sweeper in some situations. I don't know if this versatility is enough to justify its inclusion (maybe isn't), but I want to test it before changing it.

Kavu Lair (I hate giving opponents cards), Wood Elves (love that you can use the forest immediately, and doesn't die as easily, but 1 mana is just better in my opinion), Sakura-Tribe Elder (for similar reasons!), Caldera Hellion (Useful, but 5 mana is a lot for a sweeper in comparison to Rolling Earthquake, Electrickery, Pyroclasm, or Sweltering Suns) would be my drops for the dorks.

Pretty cool. You might like Caldera Hellion and Volcanic Fallout. Also, Grothama, All-Devouring seems fun here.

"Never forget: the lightning starts at the ground."

One quick not: Caldera Hellion is a jund card, not a grixis one.

I think:

Sandwurm Convergence -> Multani, Yavimaya's Avatar because Multani is an elemental and lets you get more land drops with his second ability.

Oran-Rief Hydra -> Rampaging Baloths because creating 4/4 dudes per land throws more power on the board than boosting one dude by 1 or 2.

Akoum Hellkite -> Embodiment of Insight because it's an elemental that makes your lands elementals; more fodder for Omnath.

Scute Mob -> Fires of Yavimaya because you need haste, not a random dude that doesn't really do anything.

Yavimaya Elder -> Incandescent Soulstoke because it's an elemental anthem that also lets you cheat in elementals at instant speed that then bolt with Omnath.

Abundance -> Skullmulcher because you need to draw more cards, and Abundance doesn't actually net you cards.

Omnath, Locus of Mana -> Sylvan Safekeeper because you want to be using your mana, not saving it, and Safekeeper can protect Omnath from spot removal.

Westvale Abbey  Flip -> Stomping Ground because Westvale Abbey is illegal in your deck because Ormendahl is a black card. It sucks, but it's the same reason why I can't put Archangel Avacyn  Flip in my Karametra, God of Harvests deck.

Commander's Sphere -> Crucible of Worlds because Crucible can get you lands, but the Sphere does not.

Zendikar's Roil -> The Mending of Dominaria because you have a lot of lands that sac themselves, Mending can get them back while also possibly recurring creatures from the grave.

Harmonize -> Life's Legacy because you will net more draws and get an Omnath trigger on the stack as well.

Other cards to find room for: Barrage of Expendables, Caldera Hellion, Hammer of Purphoros, and Evolutionary Leap.

Very cool concept!

I worry about the fragility of depending on your commander for your combos, although a Boros commander is certainly great for this deck. Gisela, Blade of Goldnight, might be the best one for this deck, but I bet Razia, Boros Archangel, would work well, too. I might suggest that Avacyn go in the 99 as a trigger for Repercussion.

Neheb, the Eternal also seems broken for this deck.

Have you ever tested with other creatures and spells that might trigger Repercussion more frequently? With more tutors to fetch for it, like Academy Rector, Idyllic Tutor, and Plea for Guidance?

In terms of spells that might reasonably consistently trigger Repercussion, have you tested with additional, efficient "...damage to each creature" spells like Balefire Dragon, Anger of the Gods, Bloodfire Dwarf, Bloodfire Kavu, Breath of Darigaaz, Caldera Hellion, Cave-In, Chandra, Flamecaller, Devastating Dreams, Faultline, Firespout, Firestorm, Incendiary Command, Pyroclasm, Kozilek's Return, Krark-Clan Shaman, Magma Vein, Martyr of Ashes (+ Proclamation of Rebirth), Meteor Blast, Pyrohemia, Rupture, Ryusei, the Falling Star, Scourge of Kher Ridges, Scouring Sands, Slagstorm, Slice and Dice (cycled), Starstorm, Subterranean Tremors, Sulfurous Blast, Sweltering Suns, Thunder Dragon, Tremor, Electrickery, Volcanic Fallout, Volcanic Spray, Whipflare, or Yamabushi's Storm?

It seems like tutor, ramp, win with direct creature damage is the path to victory with or without Avacyn, so the more cards dedicated to those three things, the better.

Happy brewing!

Moonbar- I've added a Siege-Gang Commander since the MD Caldera Hellion never felt good to cast in the few games I played. What would be the card you'd cut if you wanted to add the second Nissa to this list?
