Cabal Paladin

Finale of Eternity is not affected by Cabal Paladin 's triggered ability. The trigger ability cares if a historic spell is cast. A historic spell is any artifact, legendary, or saga spell. Finale of Eternity is not historic.

700.6. The term historic refers to an object that has the legendary supertype, the artifact card type, or the Saga subtype.

Even if Finale of Eternity was a historic spell, you are correct in assuming that it would not cause Cabal Paladin to trigger because the spell was already cast and is in the process of resolution.

701.4. Cast

  • 701.4a To cast a spell is to take it from the zone it’s in (usually the hand), put it on the stack, and pay its costs, so that it will eventually resolve and have its effect. A player may cast a spell if they have priority. See rule 601, “Casting Spells.”
  • 701.4b To cast a card is to cast it as a spell.

Cool deck, although not sure about the Cabal Paladin, as it seems a bit slow, so maybe replace with Ornithopter or Scrapheap Scrounger would be best.

My suggestions:

If you want to speed up the deck and potentially do something along the lines of Reckless Fireweaver, Cabal Paladin hits for two and does it on cast of historic spells which hits sagas and legendaries of which you have multiple in the deck.

Potentially less impactful than I would like it to be, but still a decent artifact for miscellaneous use: Explosive Apparatus can be used for shocking a creature, or for extra face damage. Also a 1 CMC artifact is nice when you know that The Antiquities War will go off next turn.

For reasons I don’t think I need to go into: Ornithopter.

I know it’s a fringe card but Metalwork Colossus can be nice if you can build a board state and pair it with itself and a Sai, Master Thopterist for an infinite sac/ETB combo, can be aided by Cabal Paladin.

Potentially pretty good as a beater and a way to turn those artifacts into food to beef up a win condition, Defiant Salvager can double as a sacrifice outlet for any artifact with a dies ability, like Servo Schematic.

Phylactery Lich (after some playtest) seems quite hard to cast in general or at least without Navigator's Compass, thing is, Compass is usually your Skilled Animator target and tapping it feels pretty bad.

Second, i dont understand the inclusion of Cabal Paladin, 4 mana do nothing cards are really bad, i would prefer something like Skyscanner which is also a much better animator target.

Third, consider Gleaming Barrier, 4 toughness is relevant, and the treasure is also relevant.

Last, PLAY 2 x Karn, Scion of Urza and 2 x Tezzeret, Artifice Master!!!! they are completely worth it, specially since your list has a "COMPETITIVE" tag.

Instead of Murder perhaps Spell Swindle My thoughts you've got quite a few destroy spells and even better negative health effects, if you caught a big counter late game all those treasures would be with an The Antiquities War proc.

Cabal Paladin feels a little out of place, but I understand the reasoning for him and I'm sure he does quite a bit of damage. I'd perhaps suggest in his place Mastermind's Acquisition Allows you to hunt for anything main or side board. Marionette Master in the Sideboard would be a rather fun finisher with the addition of Mastermind's Acquisition.

Hornswoggle would also be a legitimate idea for the addition of the treasure and the extremely creature heavy meta.

You got an Ajani foil promo? That's luck right there. I would take out Eviscerate, Gideon's Reproach and Cast Down and replace them with Murder (and put Cast Down on the sideboard to sideboard in when you see a deck without legendary creatures). If you are focusing on having a lot of legendary creatures in this deck, then I would add 2 more of Benalish Honor Guard, as that thing can be scary with a ton of legendary creatures on the battlefield. I don't really think that Cabal Paladin is really that good, so I would take that out if I were you. I would also take out Urgoros, the Empty One (a 4/3 for 6 mana doesn't sound to good, and his ability is meh). Arvad the Cursed is really good in this deck, but I would only have 2 of him in here because you don't want 2 of the same legendary in your hand. Zhalfirin Void should be taken out as you are not running a colorless mana deck. Cabal Stronghold is a little slow for me, but you can keep it in there if you want to. Angel of the Dawn doesn't seem the best as you have to spend 5 mana (which, most of the time, means you can only play that creature) just for a +1/+1 until end of turn. Divest is a good card, but I really think it would be more disappointing to have that be drawn then maybe another knight card in your deck (plus this deck has to get down to 60 cards anyways). I would also get rid of Forsaken Sanctuary for more Isolated Chapel.

TL;DR: Remove: 2 Eviscerate, 1 Cast Down, 1 Urgoros, the Empty One, 1 Arvad the Cursed, 2 Zhalfirin Void, 1 Angel of the Dawn, 1 Cabal Stronghold 1 Divest, 2 Forsaken Sanctuary Add: 4 Murder, 2 Benalish Honor Guard, 2 Isolated Chapel Add (to sideboard): 2-4 Cast Down

Again this is just my recommendation. If you find that some of the cards you are playing with that you feel down have a big enough impact to help you win, then you should take those cards out and add in either a multiple of a card that you know is good in your deck, or try an entirely new card. Sorry that this is long, but I wanted to explain my reasoning for each suggestion. Nice deck you have here (giving it a +1) and good luck at FNM!
