Name a nonland card. Target player reveals his or her hand. That player discards a card with that name. If he or she can't, you draw a card.

Brain Pry Discussion

np, glad to help :) Since you did decide to go with that route, I strongly suggest adding Wrench Mind (probably in place of Brain Pry) and a couple Raven's Crime to your deck. Wrench Mind is often a two-for-one and is likely the best way to get the opponent's hand empty quickly in modern (plus it puts 2 counters on the Quest in one go), and Raven's Crime is a great way to turn dead lands in the late game into more discard or use your lands if you flood out. Also, you might want to consider playing Hypnotic Specter over Shimian Specter for the random discard effect, which is REALLY strong. It costs less and triggers the Quest too.

Thanks for comment! Brain Pry was actually in the autosuggestions, and I almost added it. Now I think I will, its better than pulling teeth. But I think Im to low on creatures... Maybe just add some one drop deathtouches? I do have inquisition of kozilek, but theyre in a another deck. Dash Hopes is kinda cool.

Grave Titan and Wurmcoil Engine do not synergize well with Illness in the Ranks.

Inquisition of Kozilek is a modern discard staple. But, if that's too much, something that draws and/or discards is Brain Pry for the same mana cost as your Pulling Teeth. It might work for you, since you know exactly what cards hate your deck. Works best in a predictable metagame, where you can look at them and (for example) say "You're not holding a Blood Moon, are you?"

I'm not sure how useful those pinpoint discard spells will be late game. Once the opponent's hand is empty, most of your cards are dead. Some discard cards like Brain Pry can replace themselves once the opponent has an empty hand. Or, something like Call the Bloodline or Pack Rat can make your discard spells do something else once the opponent is empty handed.

Guul Draz Specter and Reality Smasher are some critters that come to mind when I think of discard, but I don't think Reality Smasher is in the budget at all.

Since you're using Liliana's Caress and Abyssal Nocturnus, you might consider Dark Deal to deliver some damage, while still leaving them with cards in hand for a followup Mind Sludge. Don't forget to Dream Salvage or Geth's Grimoire if you do.

Replace your Mind Rot with Stupor, if you can. I'd play Megrim over Liliana's caress, since Megrim can damage opponents' planeswalkers if needed, but that's just personal preference. For removal, I'm a big fan of Devour in Shadow.

Anyway...for your sideboard, Relic of Progenitus or the cheaper Scrabbling Claws to stop those graveyard hijinks. Either Pithing Needle or the cheaper Damping Matrix can stop some activated abilities. I'd put in some Poor Man's Damnation Barter in Blood, Languish or Consume the Meek to stop critter strategies. To break combos, a card like Memoricide or Cranial Extraction.

Welcome, you might want to have a look at some 8-rack lists, your deck is different but of a similar style. Some specific thoughts -

  1. Replace Compelling Deterrence with Vapor Snag.

  2. Replace Despise with Duress.

  3. Forced Fruition is too slow and your not running enough discard to make it worthwhile, Killing Wave could be a handy sweeper.

  4. Warped Devotion only really triggers on Compelling Deterrence (most of the time Unsubstantiate is a counterspell) and it costs 3 Brain Pry could be discard or draw.

  5. Mind Slash is again too slow, I'd suggest Inquisition of Kozilek but Raven's Crime combos nicely with Dakmor Salvage.

  6. Abyssal Nocturnus might be better replaced with Nyxathid or Inverter of Truth.

  7. Extirpate, Quest for the Nihil Stone, Augur of Skulls and Dream Salvage are cards worth considering, you will need Ghost Quarter in your sideboard atleast.

Suggestions:

Basically, you need to focus your strategy into something more cohesive. Ramp is fine and dandy, but you need dedicated removal too.

Also, here are some fun fatties you might want to acquire as end game.

You could add Burning Inquiry and/or Brain Pry.
