Okay, so Captain Brandis Thorn is mentioned on Bombard, Cancel, Orazca Raptor, and Walk the Plank.

Using the last one as the primary inspiration:

I like the idea of this as an aggro finisher/top of curve, and think his quotes seem to be a -type figure, who doesn't particularly value life, and this ability is ambivalent to whether your opponent sacrifices the creature you lets you have them (temporarily, otherwise this wouldn't be much of a choice).

The challenge above is to make a rat for Marrow-Gnawer

Maybe I misunderstood you, but there's a decent amount of cannons on the art of the Ixalan block: Bombard, Cancel, Elaborate Firecannon, Firecannon Blast, Lightning-Rig Crew, Makeshift Munitions & Storm the Vault  ^Flip. I think what stands out more is the absence of personal firearms for pirates in favor of crossbows; see e.g. Dinosaur Hunter & Storm Fleet Swashbuckler.

This was so needed card:Despark that card is a slightly less powerful Assassin's Trophy but yet again black is required; I was hoping red would get something like Bombard for planeswalkers or Fight with Fire that targets planeswalkers.

I am not even running any these cards in my decks I was just hoping for a more diverse set of tools to deal with the upcoming onslaught of planeswalkers to have a more diverse deck builds. Personally on arena I am already dipped into black on one of my main decks so very little effect on me. Like I said I was just looking for a more diverse tool box to be created by MTG.

Guild Summit won't do much in this deck as you only have 1 guildgate in the deck. Outpost Siege , while getting you cards you can cast from exile, isn't technically drawing them so doesn't trigger your commander's ability.

Brainstorm is card draw that pretty much becomes Lightning Bolt as well with this commander.

Cards like Direct Current and Bombard are not great removal in the EDH format as too much of what you want to remove is way too big for that minimal damage. If you want to keep a bolt effect, Bombard should become Spit Flame because you could potentially recur it by casting your commander or one of the handful of dragons you have in the 99.

Some EDH removal staples include: Chaos Warp , Pongify , Rapid Hybridization and Reality Shift for targeted removal and you will also want a couple of boardwipes such as Blasphemous Act , Hour of Devastation , Earthquake or Chain Reaction .

I'd cut some of the creatures like Leapfrog to go with more instants and sorceries to take advantage of your commander's last line of text. Expansion / Explosion is one I'd strongly consider.

Some cards that work with all versions of Niv: Basilisk Collar and Gorgon Flail to give his pinging ability deathtouch for boardcontrol and Curiosity is a superior engine for him.

And considering his casting cost, I'd look to add a Gilded Lotus to the deck as you could easily get stuck with not having enough of one of your colors.

I say if you wanna pay 3 for Convolute go with a hard counter like Dissolve . If the double blue in the cost scares you then I'd suggest Condescend / Mana Leak instead.

Also the synergy of artifacts may make Shrapnel Blast a neat choice over Bombard

Flame Slash > Bombard & Lightning Strike > Burn the Impure .

Maybe more creatures that get bonuses from equipment? Kitesail Apprentice , Kor Duelist , Auriok Glaivemaster , etc.
