This is a stompy deck for sure. Setting a fast clock and beating ass with Troll / Gurmag is a great gameplan, especially against my favorite deck (Altar Tron). My big questions is how this matches up against something like Caw-Gates or Mono Red.

Caw-Gates might get their value from lands but the exile based removal and sea of counterspells might run you out of gas. Your deck has a lot of threats but they can chump with Sacred Cat or Squadron Hawk long enough to dig for an answer, and once they get Cat + Basilisk Gate online they can race any threat in your deck with lifelink. Maybe your plan is to side out the dark rituals and Duress until you find an opening? Exhume definitely favors your beefy monsters over their 1/1s but idk how easy it is to resolve.

Mon Red is just absurdly fast. Do you ritual out a blocker really fast and race them or...?

You can be cute and do Ritual type stuff with Baldur's Gate, you can pump a dude with Basilisk Gate, and If you're running Ghyrson Starn, Kelermorph you can do some sheniaghans with Crackling Perimeter also works with similar commanders like torbran

I have come to remind you that the Baldur's Gate set came out! Granted, some of these are slightly more expensive than a regular gate, but not by very much.

  • Gond Gate is going to make your deck a lot faster. Like, a lot.

  • Baldur's Gate. Need I say anything more? Won't help with your win condition, but it's still loads of mana.

  • Citadel Gate, Sea Gate, Black Dragon Gate, , Cliffgate, and Manor Gate are just better than the standard gates.

  • Basilisk Gate could protect a creature of yours if you're not ready for it to die yet, or if you want to swoop in for the kill. These three last ones are kinda meh, but they're here.

  • Thran Portal is probably just not worth the 1 ping a turn. It's not crazy bad, but eh.

  • Heap Gate is cool, but not super necessary.

NewHorizons howdy howdy!

3 Wincons is a little misleading, technically it's only 2 but in that category I have listed the enablers for both strategies. Generally, going for Maze's End is faster and more reliable, but sometimes I draw something like Xenagos or Basilisk Gate early and once I get child out turn 4 or 5 I can just start swinging.

If someone exiles Maze's End I'm still a very control heavy deck with lots of recursion and tutors. Child can one shot people if you get out both Basilisk Gate and Xenagos. All you need is an opening.

You can find all of the formatting you could ever need here.

Hav0cD3m0n thank you for the suggestion!

Field of the Dead - I like the idea of this card as a potential win condition, especially with Scapeshift you could make a ton of zombies. But I personally think that it would be very difficult to time, and kind of hard to maintain with child. I think it generally breaks parity with how this deck is played.

Thespian's Stage, Vesuva - Now I really like these, and I've specifically considered Vesuva in the past, but I don't think they would fit the current list. Copying Maze's End can get us gates faster, but I often have to hold Maze's End in hand because of cards like Field of Ruin. Making copies of our Baldur's Gate, or Basilisk Gate seems good, but is it worth the slot? It's something I would have to test, but I can't think of any situations where I would want to tutor for it.

I really appreciate the input, and if you find yourself playing a copy of this deck anywhere for whatever reason definitely let me know your experience! I keep meaning to flesh out the description and add a serious primer. It's in the works, but I'm very very busy with work

Vesuva and Thespian's Stage can also be really good. Copying Maze's End, Basilisk Gate or even Field of the Dead that I just recommended are all good targets.

Looking at the new colorless gates, Baldur's Gate, Gond's Gate, and Heap Gate are all different styles of mana production, as ramp, fixing, and treasure respectively. Basilisk Gate is more interesting with Keene, giving a potential +11/+11 to a commander that's already a 4/4 pseudo-hexproof menacer. You already have to be attacking to get the benefits, but if you dig up Basilisk Gate quickly, that Voltron idea can start developing fast. Attack, pump, deal damage, find gate, repeat.
