Azorius Justiciar

Creature — Human Wizard

When Azorius Justiciar enters the battlefield, detain up to two target creatures your opponents control. (Until your next turn, those creatures can't attack or block and their activated abilities can't be activated.)

so i don't know why your running Trinket Mage, doesn't hit like anything in your deck.

In my opinion Boreas Charger isn't very good, and same goes for Pilgrim's Eye.

i don't think Lightform and Yennet, Cryptic Sovereign are too good considering your lack of big stuff

Eldrazi Displacer can only be activated with like three of your lands, so i don't think its worth running.

Mulldrifter is good here, might as well run it instead of one of your draw cards, definitly better then Treasure Hunt.

Infinite Reflection is a whole lotta fun, powerful, dumb stuff

Day of dragons is insane in this deck. Basically you get a whole bunch of 5/5 flyers, hit you opponents with em, then flicker it to get a bunch of etbs from your minions, and then get the 5/5s back. Also makes you basically immune to board wipes, including your own. Angel of Despair Luminate Primordial and Ashen Rider are good high end to help you beat down your opponents with high value etbs.

cards like Lavinia of the Tenth, Stonehorn Dignitary, Knight-Captain of Eos and Azorius Justiciar do a good job of protecting your face and aminatou, and stalling for the big stuff

if you like gonti then Jace's Mindseeker is for you.

Cathars' Crusade and Dire Undercurrents are really good with stuff like Eerie Interlude

Rite of Replication, Hour of Eternity and Pull from the Deep are crazy in the late game

if you can find one Blade of Selves is really good

Hello, I came to this deck through your forum post.

I am not the best commander player, and haven't played/faced Alesha, but I like deck building. One thing I noticed is a lack of board wipes, which I think all decks should have. There will always be a point where you won't be winning, and a board wipe can clear the path and give you the board priority. However, you don't need that many. Three should suffice, but more isn't bad either.

Boards wipes I have in mind:

You want more mana rocks. You have Sol Ring and two others, but that won't cut it, especially in a 3-colored deck. I suggest around 10 mana rocks. Here is my list:

You can of course choose whatever you want, these are just some suggestions for you to take.

Card draw. My favorite thing to do in EDH is draw cards. While white and red struggle with drawing cards, black has no problem.

Random Cards that come to mind:

  • Darksteel Plate. It allows your commander to attack even if your opponent has big blockers.

  • Bojuka Bog. Graveyard Hate with small opportunity cost.

  • Raving Dead. Can dish out a lot of damage, and when it dies, you bring it back.

  • Graveblade Marauder. Hits hard, especially because you stock your yard.

  • Return to Dust. You need artifact/enchantment hate in commander. There are too many broken things that a board full of creatures cannot solve. Luckily, there is also great removal for those things.

  • Increasing Ambition. This tutor is good because it essentially tutors 3 times in one card.

  • Crypt Ghast. Staple in any black deck. It ramps you, and even has extort. (and 2 power)

  • Aegis of the Gods. A little protection is always nice. You never know when the next Comet Storm is going to come.

  • Panharmonicon. My favorite card in standard right now. Actually, don't add this one, because you cannot effectively capitalize on it's ability to warrant using a card slot. However, if your add more ETB effects, the power of this card increases exponentially!

  • Ashnod's Altar or some other sac outlet. This allows you to sac the creature for utility, and then bring it back. Have a Priest of the Blood Rite sitting around? Sac it, reanimate it, and then sac it again! Useful for ETB creatures and also locked down creatures (Arrest, etc.).

With every added card, you have to cut a card. Cards I suggest cutting are low-impact cards. Commander is often a game of value, and Alesha assists you greatly in doing so. However, Brazen Wolves is likely not going to do anything impactful. You would much rather have something like Taurean Mauler, which is just better. Remember: Everyone has 40 life, so games tend to go long. The best cards are cards that scale as the game goes on. I will list cards that I don't think are impactful enough, but that is just my opinion. If your like using a card, or don't have better cards, you can keep it.

  • Fervent Cathar

  • Grey Merchant of Asphodel. Not enough black mana symbols. If your deck changes to add more, you can add this back in. It is pretty good, but only with support.

  • War-Name Aspirant

  • Brazen Wolves

  • Some equipment. You don't need that many equipments without equipment support. (However, you could add equipment support, like Sram, Senior Edificer)

  • Azorius Justiciar. Just use removal instead. Use Alesha to get back something else.

  • Scrapper Champion. A 3/3 double striker may sound good, but in commander, it doesn't do as much as you expect.

  • Ukud Cobra. Not terrible, but doesn't do anything either. It just sits waiting to block, then dies to a board wipe.

  • Merciless Eternal. 3 mana and discarding a card is too high a cost for just +2/+2. Even if it puts something in your graveyard, why didn't you use Tormenting Voice and draw two instead?

That's it for my comment! I hope I helped you improve your deck, and remember: commander is about creating a custom deck. Make it how you and you playgroup enjoy playing.

It feels like you are trying to do everything with your creatures and I would try and stick to the "hatebears" plan, by dropping some of the creatures that dont hate on your opponents gameplan, as modern is a quick format and putting in creatures that dont do anything for a turn or 2 is a easy way to lose. Also to up the consistency of the deck I suggest having more 4 of's.

Soul Warden - great card but i'm not sure why you'd want the lifegain, other cards would be more impactful. -4

Elvish Visionary - doesnt allow you to hurt the opponents gameplan. -4

Borderland Ranger - same as elvish visionary. -3

Azorius Arrester & Azorius Justiciar - detain is a outdated and quite weak ability which stops lots of creatures doing a few things, but still allows creatures to keep passive abilities, crew vehicles and be sacrificed to pay for costs. Dark Confidant for example wont mind that hes detained, he will still draw the extra card. -8

Total -19

Flickerwisp - I would up this to 4 in your deck, it not only hits hard in the air, but also aids your "flicker" gameplan. +1

Restoration Angel - I would up this to 4 in your deck, it also hits in the air, flickers creatures and doesnt die to Lightning Bolt +2

Blade Splicer - This is a great creature already, but gets better if it gets flickered. I would add 4 into the deck. +4

Knight of the White Orchid - First strike is a great keyword, but the ability to fetch a land if your behind is a great target to flicker. +4

Wall of Omens - I would rather play this than, Elvish Visionary as this survives longer, enables better blocking and still draws the card. +4

Total +15

These are suggestion in what you could do with the deck and keep it budget, although my suggestion is that you turn your deck mostly white, meaning you may want to drop the green or only play green late game, e.g. acidic slime at 5 CMC.

if you are going to play more white Eldrazi Displacer and Anafenza, Kin-Tree Spirit are 2 other good creatures to put in the deck.

I would consider Lyev Skyknight over Azorius Justiciar since it enters the battlefield a turn earlier and attacks flying for 3. But probably, at that point, Flickerwisp could be better since it is less mana intensive and can blink also Reflector Mage or Fiend Hunter.

n0bunga: Thanks for the fast response! Here are my thoughts on those:

Archetype of Finality was an attempt to make sure Alesha (and the reanimation target) survives combat. Did you not find it useful enough in that role?

I see your point on Azorius Justiciar.

I have Stonehorn Dignitary in here already, but I thought it might be handy to have Blinding Angel for redundancy (and since it has evasion, it might stick around to keep one player locked down while I use my recursion on something else).

Awwwww, I like Dauthi Mindripper to make Alesha into ": Target opponent discards three cards."

Kor Cartographer was there to grab Shocks, and the Flagstones/Crucible/Stack combo is WAY too much money if I plan to build this IRL.

I also see your point on Noosegraf Mob. Getting ten power for 2 mana is pretty sweet though...

Netherborn Phalanx is too conditional, I guess...

I can't afford Fulminator Mage. For now, Goblin Grenadiers will have to take that slot. There is frequently someone with no creatures in my meta, though, so I think he'll go through a reasonable amount of time.

Vampire Hexmage kills planeswalkers and neuters Atraxa. I'm a fan...But maybe Thief of Blood could do the job better...

Oppression is so viciously fun, though. And I don't plan to cast many spells, since much of my deck works by recursion from the GY...

Possibility Storm is in there for the lock with Eidolon of Rhetoric/Rule of Law. Nobody gets to play non-commander spells ever again!

I got a few recommendations for you. Draining Whelk can counter a spell for you on its ETB, similar to the Mystic Snake you're already using, but Whelk gets buffed for countering spells, so the bigger the spell you counter, the better your Whelk gets. Another card I'm thinking of is probably a little obvious, but it's Cathars' Crusade. I don't know how inclined you are to go for a commander damage kill with Rune, but Cathar's Crusade could definitely get you there. Would you also consider Azorius Justiciar? He can hold down two of your opponents' threats for a whole turn every time his ETB triggers, and detain even cuts out activated abilities.

Props for running Aura Shards. I feel like that card is underused.

He looks cool! Plus I can always use a 1 drop. I could run 2x of him and an extra Lavinia of the Tenth or Azorius Justiciar.

Thanks guys!
