The best card that you can have in a Quintorius deck is Alms. I highly recommend that one. It basically reads ": Make a 3/2 spirit" with Quintorius on the field... and at instant speed, too!!

On the upside, now you might have 2 extra slots open for interaction or more token creators like Vessel of Endless Rest or Alms

Arcaneful on Best Commanders in EDH [Tier List] Part 1

I think I agree with most of the Strixhaven commander ratings. I will say however I'm hoping I can get Quintorius, Field Historian to be a tier 3 deck soon. I've been testing him and while a little clunky, he can do some fun things with cards like Alms and Terror of the Peaks , etc.. I'm thinking maybe if I add some Kiki combos I can get him to be TIER 3, but we shall see.

I'll try and summarize it as best I can in a few things, I can talk about problems the deck has for awhile if I wanted to, but I'll also show some of the high points that at least this list has.

Let's start with the cons...

  1. 5 mana is a tough sell for him, and if he gets removed you get really sad at times. I feel however most of my playgroup leave him alone enough, as he's never the main threat. This does show how ramp is very key to this deck however, and especially with cards like Alms , you really need to get mana quickly.

  2. Winning can be difficult sometimes. I like winning with combos in the end, and currently it's diffiucult. I may add in some Kiki combo cards as I have them lying around anyways, but just one isn't cutting it when we don't have creature tutors. Maybe a focus on more Enchantment based wins could be effective, as tutoring for Warstorm Surge for 4 damage per spirit is nasty overtime.

  3. I was half considering changing commanders to add a color. Lack of black hurts our GY capablities.

Pros:

  1. I've never played anything like it. It's a really interesting deck that gets to abuse weird cards, and people asking what does that do again is a favorite thing of mine.

  2. The commander isn't overly threatening, as he's weird and people think hes slow. Maybe if I refine the list they'll focus him more, but currently he flies under the radar.

  3. It's a fun GY strategy. It really gets some cool things to do, and it can do some powerful plays. With a 10 card GY I got to use Alms endstep of my last opponent's turn, and made 10 spirits on turn 8 or so, killing him with Warstorm Surge . I won't forget that for awhile haha.

Overall I'm gonna keep working on him, and even though he'll never be competitive, I think he can be a strong 75% perhaps if I find a good build for him!

Honestly, I like it. It takes the (IMO) stale graveyard/reanimator archetype in a new drection, in colors that not only needed it, but have a surprising amount of things already that use the graveyard for something (like Alms , or Flashback , or Retrace ...).

In addition, the flavor really feels on point, though that might be a general Strixhaven thing. Quintorius, Field Historian is the first Boros commander that i've been excited to play since I started, and that's partly because of the flavor text on both him and Stonebound Mentor, but also see above.

Also, Sultai_Sir, I personally think that Velomachus Lorehold is pretty good as is, mainly because I don't really want a Boros Narset. Red should have a bit of risk in it, and without Blue in there to hold it back, Velomachus feels right in a way I can't explain.

Nice going buddy! I'm impressend and amused :)

Actually there really are some crazy shit 1 mana drops. Might I suggest some more?

Here we go:

Shit, I now realized that most of the cards are ramp cards while you have CMC 1. Okay, let's change plan then:

Hope this helps and feel free to check some of my volunteer 1 mana drops in: Rhys Redeemed: Infinite Enchantment Combo Control

hyena69 on Damage prevention and trample

Lets say I attack with a 20/20 trample monster, my opponent blocks with a 1/1, but somehow manages to use Alms (for istance) and put a "prevent the next 20 damage, dealt to this creature this turn" shield on that critter. Would that damage prevention soak up all the trample damage, or could I merrily trample my opponent for 19 damage?

Thanks
