i am wondering if certain things count as activate abilities so i can check if Harsh Mentor can ping opponents who do them. i know that an activate ability has cost:effect in it's text but do any of the following count as activate abilities:

paying an equip cost? (i.e. "1: attach to target creature") (variety of equipment)

paying a crew cost? (i.e. "tap any number of creatures with power 1 or greater: this vehicle becomes a creature for the turn") ( Sky Skiff )

paying straight mana? (i.e. "4W: return target creature you control to your hand") ( Aegis Automaton )

sacking the card? (i.e. "T, sack this card: search for a land and put it on the field tapped" ( Evolving Wilds )

mixed payments? (i.e. "3, T, sack this card: create a 2/2 zombie token") ( Cradle of the Accursed )

paying energy? (i.e. "pay 2 energy: put a +1/+1 counter on this card") ( Longtusk Cub )

I like more Red actually. Scrap Trawler has great recursion with the very diverse mana curve and it can edge in pretty decent damage with Pia's Revolution If you put your opponent in the right spot. Going back to the hand to avoid damage from Revolution still hits the graveyard to trigger the Trawler if there are legal targets. There are many sac outlets to exploit, such as Metalwork Colossus. Pitch the Colossus to something like Key to the City to get a hit in and then bring the Colosus back to hand by killing off two Constructs that will trigger both things and either keep your hand nice and full or edge in more damage and it's completely sustainable. If you ever actually play the Colossus it can die and bring back literally anything and then buy itself back as well. Good idea to run Hedron Archive for the mana and cost reduction just in case. He's also a construct, so there's that. All of this gives good reason to run Cathartic Reunion too to help draw through everything.

It's expensive, but I also like the idea of Aegis Automaton being able to bounce things with ETB abilities like the Gearhulks or even Ballista.

Also, there might be some power behind Augmenting Automaton and Crackdown Construct. Good old fashioned Looming Shade but it pumps both.

You can't overlook my favorite Construct in Standard either: Hedron Crawler, because mana :)

Just tossing ideas around. I'll throw together a Red build because I think that's where I'm most comfortable and see what happens.

Since your commander becomes a significant liability as soon as you reach your first upkeep, I'd suggest adding some repeatable ways to send him back to hand, such as: Aegis Automaton, Erratic Portal or Decoction Module. This way you can send your commander back to your hand and clear the "exile all sand warriors" trigger before they even appear on your upkeep. Eldrazi Monument would also fit your deck well, keeping everything alive and pumping them up a little.

Kushala, When I started putting this deck together on here it originally started out Azban but I found myself only touching 3 black cards so I scrapped them, I didn't think reaching for the 3rd color gave me that much value. I agree that black is the best midrange right now, I'm currently playing B/R Zombies. After thinking about it more I do think Greenbelt Rampager should go in. I'm not a big fan of the Aegis Automaton so those will probably come out.

LogicVoid I think I disagree here. Aid from the Cowl hits all but 5 cards. It is on the expensive side but I think it works as a pseudo draw outlet that's always valuable. That said, I'll keep an eye on how it does. I might bring the number down so I can fit the Rampagers in.
