Acquisitions Expert

Creature — Human Rogue

When Acquisitions Expert enters the battlefield, target opponent reveals a number of cards from their hand equal to the number of creatures in your party. You choose one of those cards. That player discards that card. (Your party consists up to four creatures, one Cleric, Rogue, Warrior and Wizard each.)

Once you get your opponent's hand empty, they're probably going to be drawing and playing one cards a turn, so there's no actual discard for Liliana's Caress. Caress wants your opponent to be discarding a lot, which means your opponent needs to refill their hand once in a while. Since this deck looks like it's trying to get the opponents hand empty, rather than constantly discarding, The Rack or Shrieking Affliction would probably be more reliable. If you want to build around Caress, cards like Dark Deal or Baleful Mastery might help here.

Acquisitions Expert is slightly better than Corrupt Court Official, if you want to keep the creature base the same.

Depending on budget, Liliana of the Veil is more reliable discard than Dreamstealer here, and the Orcish Bowmasters in the maybeboard are a good deterrent for, hmm, pretty much everything. Still $60+ each, though.

Hey legendofa, I’m right there with you regarding the lack of good discard interactions in standard. But I think it can work in Mono-Black. Check out what I’ve been working on, I recently updated it:

TERGRID’S TORTURE CHAMBER - Discard Control [VOW]

In my build I run no creature or hand exile effects, since those effects are non-bo’s with Tergrid. We want to be able to keep the stuff we force the opponent to discard and ‘sac. Plus I think you could run more 1-drops on the mainboard, like Dread Fugue and Bloodchief's Thirst.

Acquisitions Expert is strictly better than Elderfang Disciple since both hit 1 card of the opponent’s choice, but the Expert has 1 additional toughness.

Also, Professor Onyx is a good option for a finisher, since her ultimate can do up to 18 damage to the opponent, depending on how empty the opponent’s hand is. And she really synergizes well with Tergrid!

Budget rogues is a sweet brew - I ran it a long while back. I really reccomend running as many 1 drop rogues as you can - I was running up to 12, alongside card draw to keep them going, preferring unblockables as you can to take advantage of blackguard/thought thief and prowl. The higher up the mana curve you go, the more expensive the list gets as it turns into the faerie/ninja style lists.

Frogtosser is a fun card, but without a second cheap cost reduction spell, its probably better just to play some cheaper cmc rogues, unless you plan to ramp into a particularly key card.

Most of the below cards are really cheap, and you should be able to test different kinds of shells using them. You can mess around with mostly blue shells and add some negates, or mostly black and add push - but the best thing about rogue decks is that so long as you keep switching it up your opponents won't know exactly what they are facing, and will have to play accordingly.

Key evasive 1 drops Black - Nightshade Stinger Shadow Alley Denizen Vampire Cutthroat Thieves' Guild Enforcer Changeling Outcast

Blue - Faerie Miscreant Merfolk Windrobber Slither Blade Triton Shorestalker Mothdust Changeling

Key card draw options Low removal meta - Curiosity , Curious Obsession Glint-Sleeve Siphoner

Morsel Theft is a lightning helix at the face that draws a card when you are hitting your opponent, but bad without a board state.

Key artifact meta - Thieving Skydiver

'sorta' card advantage options

Noggin Whack / Acquisitions Expert a solid 'no hand for you' plan does a lot to keep your rogues on the battlefield. If sieze/inq is out of budget, Bribery or plain old Duress variants can still get you there.

Cards to avoid (traps)

Disciple of Deceit - the card disadvantage and tap/untap on it is punishing. Tetsuko Umezawa, Fugitive relevant rogues already evasive Thieves' Fortune - if you are looking for answers its likely they've already stopped you hitting them in the face.

Secondly, Pyre of Heroes is an interesting option to turn 1 drops into 2 drops, letting you have more consistent access to lords like soaring or blackguard. It also dodges counterspells like vial, even if its not at instant speed and doesn't help after a wrath. Its worth testing with some proxies to see how it matches you against the decks you are likely to play, as artifact removal is common (but getting them to sideboard it in is also good). Glasspool Mimic  Flip is notable in this case as a way to search out a clone of a lord without taking up a full creature slot, while Zulaport Cutthroat offers an option to drain out an opponent (even if it doesn't trigger prowl).

I hope this helps - have fun brewing!

Legion Angel isn't the best payoff that you can put in this deck. Ill rather pick another explosive big payoff creature like I mentioned above. Immersturm Predator is doing nuts in my version of offspring's revenge in arena. Im just sacrificing my either Acquisitions Expert or Basri's Lieutenant for value later on in offspring's revenge. Also, if you're going to Burning-Rune Demon , will you consider replacing it with Gravebreaker Lamia with lesser mana cost and more survivability yet still the same ability?

As for rankle, I would just go 3 copies of it replacing the lilianas. I can see her more as a sideboard card against dedicated control decks. Rankle can do damage, discard your big payoff card and draw another card. Also, selecting your sideboard depends on your local metagame or decks that you usually encounter in MTG Arena.

...or go Yorion just like everybody else lol...Since you love to self mill cards and Dimir rogues are in the current metagame, it goes into your favor. Just add more boardwipes like Doomskar and Shatter the Sky if you're worried with go wide decks.

If you really want to stick with Harmonious Archon , I will choose creatures that grows like Immersturm Predator , Oathsworn Knight , Fiend Artisan and Victory's Envoy .

Hope these advices help you more refining your deck.

Nice Build! +1

I think that Kitesail Freebooter would suit you better here than Acquisitions Expert. I can see different decks possibly being more to your advantage to snag Creatures, but I'm wary of limiting the # of cards to pick from. Kitesail is a great way to get rid of Counterspell and/or Target Destroy/Exile cards to help protect your more valuable creatures.

That's the only thing I can see that really stands out to me though, and I'm willing to admit that some of my suggestion boils down to personal preference. Maybe give it a shot though and see how it works for you!

EDIT: I didn't realize at first glance that the Discard option on Acquisition is preferable to you; but perhaps you could get away with running BOTH Kitesail and Acquisition? Solid build either way though.
