Hello everyone and welcome to my series The Modern Magic Boxwhere I break down a user submitted deck and offer my insights into what can be improved, changed or optimized. From there I hand it over to you, the T/O Community where the deck can be further discussed. Each article will focus on a single deck that was submitted in the comments of the previous article. Since this is the first official article I selected a deck from my pilot article The Modern Magic Box. And the user who is lucky number one is…

Countdown to Doomsday: Eldrazi Suspension

Modern* brokendwarf

Now, there are a few reasons why I picked brokendwarf for my first article. Firstly, brokendwarf is a relatively new Modern player. Secondly, the deck looks like a great deal of fun to play. Thirdly, it was a deck that I felt could be given a lot of advice. That does not mean that others were not deeply considered, however, I felt starting off with something quirky would be fun. Besides there is a lot of potential for mayhem! So, moving on to the breakdown.

The Breakdown

1xAll is Dust

4xRemand

2xRepeal

4xThirst for Knowledge

4xTimecrafting

4xExpedition Map

4xIzzet Signet

1xEye of Ugin

1xIsland

4xScalding Tarn

2xShivan Reef

3xSteam Vents

1xTolaria West

4xUrza's Mine

4xUrza's Power Plant

4xUrza's Tower

1xBlightsteel Colossus

1xEmrakul, the Aeons Torn

4xJhoira of the Ghitu

2xJhoira's Timebug

1xKozilek, Butcher of Truth

1xUlamog, the Infinite Gyre

3xWurmcoil Engine

The aim of the deck is utilizing either Suspend or the Urza Lands to pump out menacing threats, namely the Eldrazi. What makes this deck formidable is that while using the Urza Lands to pump out threats, there will probably be something waiting in Suspend. Clearly this is not built for highly competitive play and is just a fun time and an attempt to learn Modern as a whole.

The Good: Well, here it is, in all of its glory, card by card. To start off let me reiterate just how fun this deck looks. This deck looks like a blast to play if you can get it working for you. It has considerable ways to reach its wincon and it has several of them. Furthermore, it is resilient and can keep the tempo in its favour to stabilize. I approve that brokendwarf has opted for a Tron shell, while still utilizing the Suspend mechanic. That being said I do have suggestions to make which can improve the deck.

The Bad: While the deck is resilient I do not believe it is resilient enough, as it lacks a hard counter. Furthermore, while Suspend is a fun mechanic to abuse I am not sure how easy it is for this deck to abuse it. There are several means of removing counters, but they compete for spots with other cards. Having so many cards taking up four slots can be a nightmare as you likely to draw something you do not want or need. As such, it may be wise to cut a few cards to make room for some others.

Suggestions

Add 2xCondescend for 1xThirst for Knowledge and 1xTimecrafting – While I understand the necessity of removing those time counters and drawing cards I feel that a hard counter is vital for this deck, to stave off your opponent until you can make a big play. Alternatively you can also opt for a single Condescend and also play Spell Burst so that you have a recurring counter spell.

Add 1xJhoira's Timebug for 1xWurmcoil Engine – This is a simple change, but it should make the deck slightly less bulky. It should also speed up your time counters being removed. With Eye of Ugin there should be little worry of pulling out a Wurmcoil Engine.

Add 1xAcademy Ruins for either Steam Vents or Shivan Reef – This is purely to regain artifacts that have been destroyed or discarded. Recurring Wurmcoil Engine for everyone!

Other Considerations

Here is a short list of cards you may wish to consider in conjunction with my previous suggestions:

Sweepers: Pyroclasm and Engineered Explosives

Burn: Lightning Bolt, Magma Jet and Electrolyze

Sideboard

The Sideboard consists of the following: Two All is Dust, Three Spellskite and One Iona, Shield of Emeria.

The user assignment for this article is to not only discuss the suggestions and other possible suggestions for the mainboard, but to help fill out the sideboard for brokendwarf as there are too many possibilities for a single person to construct and list.

Conclusion

Well that wraps up my first ever article of The Modern Magic Box! I hope some of you found this instructive and enjoyable to read. If you have any suggestions regarding my format of the article do not hesitate to post them in the comments below. I would like for these articles to be successful and for that I need your advice to make them successful.

Remember! If you would like to be featured on my next article please contribute to the discussion! If you contribute to the discussion I am far more likely to pick your deck. Furthermore, all submissions must be formatted in the large deck style as well with a description of your meta and your budget. Following these instructions will increase your chance of being picked.

Well I still don't really know a lot about the format, but maybe I can offer a decent suggestions or two.

From what I've heard, Anger of the Gods is starting to get some consideration in addition to Pyroclasm , so that's another possibility. Surgical Extraction is a SB possibility. I like the Electrolyze you mentioned, looks like a great card. Additionally, is Cyclonic Rift playable here? With the amount of mana Tron can produce, it might work.

Like in the initial article, I'm interested in playing the format but lack the knowledge to really do so. The deck I will submit is a RBW Midrange Token deck. The meta that I would most likely play it in would be FNM level. Until I know enough about the format to start investing in cards, assume I have no budget and just fire away card suggestions.

Interesting, i approve. Most of all, i liked how you choose a decklist that isn't a top tier, a homebrew. Just out of interest, why did you choose Pyroclasm . With Wild Nacatl being a thing in modern, have a sweeper that deals three damage is really helpful. Do you think that 4 jhoira is a bit too much? She is legendary and you only need 1 on the battlefield to be effective.
The deck that i would like to submit:

@thePESSIMIST, one problem with Cyclonic Rift is that you still have to cast the overload cost after being suspended. Also, for the sideboard, i would consider putting in Spell Pierce /Dismember for added control!

GureiSeion says... #4

I'd suggest Fury Charm as a rival to Jhoira's Timebug ~ It's a guaranteed "two activations" without the risk of being removed, has combat trick application, and incidentally hurts a few of the more common Modern decks out there.

As for sideboard, I'd recommend some basic graveyard hate (I prefer Relic of Progenitus , since it can draw) and the Engineered Explosives recommended in Other Considerations (two cmc really is the magic number from what I've seen).

Lastly, a submission:

Since Warp World doesn't get enough love these days. Meta's a little bit of everything, and the budget's open to pretty much anything but Tarmogoyf .

So unfortunately, I don't have much to add to discussion in the way of advice, because I am very new to Magic in general and I don't know much about the Modern metagame; however, if you would take a look at my deck and give me advice on it, I would be forever grateful.

@ th5ervant

Repeal is what is known as a cantrip. Because it lets you draw a card it maintains your card advantage, while outting your opponent at a disadvantage.

Furthermore, for me to consider your deck I will need an idea of budget and metagame. At the very least, I need some idea of a budget.

CanadianSamurai- For budget, $20 per card is my upper limit, so no Jace, the Mind Sculptor or Wrath of God . For meta, I recently moved to a new area and haven't played it here yet, so I'm not sure of what the meta is.

It revolves around keeping the game in your favor through early land destruction. It often keeps the opponent at low land, but has a few troubles in the later game.

Cyclonic Rift in a blue Tron deck, hardcast, would be amazing.

Hurkyl's Recall in the sideboard for Affinity.

Very fun looking deck! It may take people by surprise... Well written article, I might add.

I have a Gruul Aggro deck that's fun, consistent, and fairly competitive:

I have a meta chock full of burn, pod, and Maverick. I guess I need a SB, so help there would be appreciated but just the concept and other cards I might have forgotten could be worked with as well. It's meant to be a Control/Aggro fusion. Using creatures that like to die or ETB in conjunction with Athreos, God of Passage to get them back for more value.

Grafdigger's Cage is pretty standard against Living End. Engineered Explosives or Ratchet Bomb would be good against Affinity, or even Chalice of the Void . I like Shattering Spree or Smelt as more options to deal with Affinity or Pod. Unsummon or Aura Graft would be good for Twin.

  • My budget: unlimited.

  • The deck is being built for regular Modern weekly tournaments at my town, but I would really (if possible) like it to be best tuned to be competitive at Modern PQT's and the like. Not for casual play.

April 24, 2014 5:21 p.m.

Pithing Needle is always a good standby against Pod or Twin decks. I agree that a copy or two of Relic of Progenitus would help as GureiSeion suggested. I haven't played much against storm decks but would Counterflux be helpful in any regard against them or do they almost never have more than one spell on the stack at a time? I'm still relatively new to the modern scene as there isn't much in the way of tournaments for the format in my area. At any rate, those are my sideboard suggestions such as they are.

If you have the time, I would appreciate any comments that could be made on my pet Modern deck. It's based somewhat on Maverick though there are quite a few things I can do to improve it. On the whole, I can't really spend much more than 40 or 50 dollars on a single card but I will do what I can. I tend to see a lot of Twin and Pod decks in the local meta when there is a tourney and Zoo has been more common as of late as well. This thing tends to get stomped so it's apparent that I have a lot of work to do.

My budget: Kinda-sorta tight, though I wouldn't mind going a bit above the $60 max budget I have set for it.

The meta: Mono-red sligh insanity. Throw out small creatures really fast and punch your opponent in the face really hard before they can twitch. It manipulates hasty creatures like Ball Lightning in order to deliver huge damage while powering through anything that tries to block it.

@ JimothyCrikkett by "meta" I mean metagame, as in what you will be playing against.

April 26, 2014 12:31 a.m.

Oooohhh. My bad.

In that case, I'll rephrase:

Meta: My local meta (which really is more situated at my local high school as my local LGS went out of business some time ago) pits me up against some rather mean decks, such as Goblin Tribal, Grixis Control, and even some cloudburst decks.
