This is really suspicious, coming from this opponent. Caley never casts at sorcery speed precombat unless he has a good reason, and here I think the good reason is that he wants me to think that he's harmless because he's mostly tapped out. Also if he wanted to trade the Arresters he could have offered it earlier. I'm not sure though. He might be just pressing his advantage and trying to make me feel pressured, or bluff me into not blocking and taking free damage. But if he was trying to bluff me he'd probably have left his lands open, I think. Actually, he only has a Plains open and I can't think of many things that would be run in this deck that would only cost one white mana. I don't really think I can afford to just sit here and take the damage. I will block.

E blocks C's arrester with his. C casts Swift Justice on his Arrester. Dutiful Thrull hits and E's arrester dies. (C 18, E 17).

Should have gone with my first instinct.

This was a feigned ignorance play. Good players especially tend to think that if a player casts a lot of stuff pre-combat, their opponent is just screwing up and they have nothing to fear in the combat phase since a player with a combat trick usually shows hesitation to commit to doing anything until their combat trick is resolved. By tapping out except for one Plains, I was trying to show harmlessness and get a free creature kill off the difficult-to-use Swift Justice, which I did.

This flier issue will get really serious in a turn or two. Need the Guardian or the Skirmisher.

I might be willing to trade this for Leyline Phantom to force him to be more defensively wary.

Augh. I really want to cast this on Leyline Phantom, but it would be so easy for him to get rid of. I think Kingpin's Pet is the best play. If I find a flying blocker, Kingpin's Pet is a more serious threat than the Skyknight, and if I don't find a flying blocker, I'm dead anyway. I can pump up Kraul Warrior and trade, maybe, but I'll STILL need something else to get in there.

I could attack with Maze Glider, but it's the only thing stopping me from dying and I don't want to run into Executioner's Swing or Avenging Arrow. Better to try and win with Debt to the Deathless.

Thoughts

Debt to the Deathless is a hell of a card. That deck has a LOT of fliers, but he still would have lost without absolutely top-flight play from Ethereal, who was cautious with his removal and tricks and really maximized his damage with them. Very good match.

E - "Game 1, final score 1-0. Long game, and Raynor had juuuust enough to win at the last second. Game 2, Fisher drew all his removal and Raynor didn't. Game 3, Raynor had to mull to 5, but still put up a good fight. Fisher just drew really hot and Raynor had too many mid-range creatures that had low P/T like Balustrade Spy.

I don't really understand why we couldn't keep attacking with lifelink near the end of game 3, or why you traded two creatures for one just to gain a little bit of extra life, but good game anyways!

I gotta know... instead of double blocking and calling life link, why not call first strike and lose nothing but wipe out his creature? having 2 big bodies albeit ground bodies sounds pretty important?

@Goody - Answer to first question - nothing could attack without dying. Second question - That creature was a MUCH bigger problem than my two creatures combined were ever going to pose.

@DeckBuilder345 - Remember that I have to call it at the start. If I had called first strike, he never would have attacked in the first place. I wanted to trade the creatures, so I invited the attack by calling lifelink.

First game you didn't gain life after the Swift Justice , which would have made a difference since he wouldn't be able to Debt to the Deathless you for the kill, prolonging the game a bit and giving you a chance.

I understand the reasoning, but I would have played Turn 10 differently. Trade up Maze Abomination ? Absolutely. I would have kept Ogre Jailbreaker , though. Knowing that we have Unflinching Courage and Rites of Reaping in the deck, I'll keep a good body. (We never drew either, but thems the breaks.) I understand the need for life gain, but our agoraphobic angel wasn't going anywhere. We might have gained 4 life repeatedly on subsequent turns.

I feel like there might've been a life gain math error in game 3... two 4 power lifelink creatures gain you 8 life, but you went from 23 to 29. Don't know that it would've helped more to be at 31, but it would make me feel better. :)

Been watching silently from the shadows till now...I think there is an transcription error rather than a lifegain one: the blocking Maze Abomination should be Azorius Arrester .

Other than that, in game 3 turn 16, the Ethereal Armor should have made the Balustrade Spy a 4/5, because One Thousand Lashes were also still out, right? Why not use it as a blocker against the Angelic Skirmisher ?

@Bifurcator - I honestly can't remember what was occurring in either of those scenarios now. I am determined that this will be the last draft debate where I have to rely on hastily scrawled notes to present the games.
