Elaine's Commentary
E - "I think that's a really wise pick, and in a pack where it was really hard to make the right call. There are a lot of temping things to go for here, but given what we have, Dutiful Thrull is amazing. Very sensible."

I like the keyrune over everything else here because it's' color fixing for both of the colors we've talked about splashing for. I also like Daring Skyjek , but 3/2 trample and mana rock is slightly better IMO than an occasional 3/1 flyer who usually just trades up.

Decent body, has flying. Gruul Keyrune is nice but I'm not sure we need those colors

a 2/3 evasive body with some deck disruption tacked on in one of our two "main" colors is really all you can ask for on pick 7.
the Gruul Keyrune does in fact fix the two colors we were considering splashing, but I do not think we would splash both red and green. so this would only fix one color, and we wouldn't be able to "turn it on" so to speak.
only other two cards worth our consideration would be Daring Skyjek or Shadow Alley Denizen but both of those would want to be in a more aggressive build than what we have going on here.

Much easier pick this time around. We aren't going aggressive enough for Daring Skyjek , and everything else (except Gridlock ) is pretty meh.

I was going to suggest the Gargoyle, but then I noticed the spy also has flying.

+1 Balustrade Spy
I agree that this pick is much easier than the previous one. The Spy is decent in almost every situation.

there's a nice little combo with him and Undercity Informer +Midnight Recovery that does well in limited.

We want to damage in the air, and it's a pretty good body overall. Easier pick by far than the last one.

We dont want to take too much mana fixing in the early game, especially since the dgm pack will have loads of it. Also this guy is a freaking boss

Nothing to see here. Daring Skyjek is good, but more flying is always good. Plus the spy is a rogue, which is a minor advantage over the Skyjek.
May 17, 2013 9:20 a.m.
For the reasons stated above about it being on color, flying, and three toughness. Mill will be marginally relevant and give us pictures at our opponent's deck for game 2 and 3 (if it happens)... milling a bomb away is a great way to make sure it isn't ever played.

+1 Gridlock
don't you think we have a good amount of flying creatures? i like Gridlock because it often screws up our opponent's strategy.
May 17, 2013 10:31 a.m.
@tempest Is Gridlock good enough to splash for or are you hate drafting? We're currently splashing red (in theory) for Firemane Avenger , Pit Fight , and Lobber Crew (not that all will make it in the main). Do you really want to add a 4th color to the mix for this one instant?

And that was not by choice. Gridlock is not that good. It's only real utility lies in clearing blockers for an alpha-strike, which is not a strategy our deck wants to use. Also, we have no reason to want to play blue.

He's a decent flier and everything else is unexciting.

+1 Balustrade Spy .
Gridlock is a mediocre card at best that seems better than it is because when the good, it's memorable and when it's bad, it's forgettable. It's also not a fit for our deck, since it's designed to clear blockers out of the way an we already have a good handful of evasive dudes, not to mention the Skirmiser who makes blocking difficult for our opponent.
May 17, 2013 11:38 a.m.
Idk we already have one batallion creature, and Daring Skyjek trades up if he's not swinging
May 17, 2013 11:56 a.m.
thebeardedshuffler says... #26
But he doesn't hang around, and dies to everything. Besides, having multiple batallion creatures is irrelevant as they only care about how many other creatures you have, not how many have batallion. And let's not forget, we're more likely to trigger that batallion with other fliers, and we don't want to have to hold back on attacking because we can't trigger skyjek's batallion. The spy can swing in over the ground pounders all the time.

It can do some serious work in drafts, where most decks are gonna be 40ish cards. Decent body, and a good flier. Solid pick. Gruul Keyrune
interests me, but even if we splash red, we dont have the green to make it shine. I'd rather get an in color guildgate for that.

-1 Gruul Keyrune
+1 Balustrade Spy
My logic was flawed. Maybe I was dreaming about some place in magical Christmas land where Gruul Keyrune
was going to be the nuts because it lives against board sweepers and ramps us into our late game by at least one turn (sooner if we grab cluestones). There will be guildgates and cluestones in the next set of packs for our mana fixing.
