where is Snapcaster Mage?

BuLLZ3Y3 says... #2

This is a very interesting challenge. Many of these creatures are quite good, but once again I'm going to make my decisions based on pure power level.

==============================================

1) Tarmogoyf - Clearly more powerful.

2) Morphling - While the titans were all good at one point, Morphling was Superman back in the day.

3) Emrakul, the Aeons Torn - No contest.

4) Stoneforge Mystic - While both cards are of similar power level, BBE was never banned from Standard.

5) Mother of Runes - Don't get me wrong, 'Tog is really powerful. But while he needs other cards to make him really good (Upheaval), Mom is just good all by herself.

6) Clone - I feel this effect is slightly more powerful, although this was really close.

7) Birds of Paradise - Again, outside of the Flash combo, Protean Hulk isn't that good.

8) Dark Confidant - Unfortunately, Mistbind Clique just doesn't quite cut it compared to Bob.

==============================================

That's what I think, at least. :P

Serra Ascendant is out of its league here, in my opinion.

Vendilion Clique is not, but I had to make a hard decision about whether to include it. It's just barely on the outside looking in.

Snapcaster Mage is a very, very popular card, but he's not an utter format-wrecker like some of the other cards here are. He's a good glue card that generally makes the deck better, but the decks would still work without him.

Stoneforge Mystic & Bloodbraid Elf, on the other hand - format wreckers that defined their very decks.

1) Tarmogoyf There's rarely anything as powerful as this and baneslayer just can;t quite keep up.

2) Titans, seeing I have never played with Morphling but titans are always powerful in multiple formats. Primeval Titan, mostly.

3) Emrakul, the Aeons Torn. Best creature ever, ever.

4) Stoneforge Mystic wins because of its use in more than one deck, whereas Bloodbraid Elf was a star player in only jund mostly.

5) Mother of Runes. I don't really know why

6) Eternal Witness. Card advantage and a great card.

7) Birds of Paradise is the staple mana dork since its original printing and we haven't had anything as efficient as birds.

8) Dark Confidant wins this one. Mistbind Clique is good. Bob is just an amazing card always.

Basing the creatures off of power, not mana cost or how easy they are to get on the field

  1. Tarmogoyf has the potential to be a massive creature and wins here, even though Baneslayer Angel is pretty cool
  2. The Titans
  3. Emrakul, the Aeons Torn no contest here
  4. Stoneforge Mystic
  5. Mother of Runes for some awesome creature protection
  6. Clone.... extremely versatile and can fit any need
  7. Protean Hulk has the infamous flash combo for an instant win, but is also pretty awesome on it's own
  8. Mistbind Clique... tapping all lands a player controls combo'd with flash is like skipping your opponents turn.

I find the lower seeds beating the top seeds in many of the matchups, not sure if it's due to my inexperience or something wrong with the seeding

  1. Baneslayer Angel - Tarmogoyf is good, but requires setting up. And is much more easily countered by graveyard hate than Baneslayer is. It IS more cost-efficient than Baneslayer though, and that's saying a LOT. Tough match. Which is weird seeing as it's the first vs the 16th seed
  2. The Titans - Once you drop a titan, it keeps on going, like the energizer bunny. Morphling needs recharging.
  3. Emrakul, the Aeons Torn - Iconically, ridiculously huge, and for good reason. The pinnacle of gigantic creatures vs. a combo enabler? Sorry Painter's Servant.
  4. Stoneforge Mystic - Bloodbraid Elf broke a deck, Stoneforge Mystic broke an entire subtype.
  5. Mother of Runes - Similar to the titans, she keeps on giving and giving. In the face of Psychatog, someone is just gonna play Fog or Angel's Grace and laugh.
  6. Clone - Much more fun and versatile. If Eternal Witness returned it to the battlefield it would be broken, but if not, Clone wins.
  7. Birds of Paradise - Similar to the Stoneforge Mystic vs Bloodbraid Elf, Birds is useful in a thousand and one decks. Protean Hulk is just there for a gimmicky first turn kill.
  8. Dark Confidant - Bob.

  1. Baneslayer Angel. I always ran into a lot of graveyard hate, so any 'Goyf wasn't so hot.
  2. Titans
  3. Emrakul, the Aeons Torn. I've used used Painter's Servant, and it's great, but... Man.
  4. Stoneforge Mystic. Both are awesome, but the Mystic seems applicable more often.
  5. Mother of Runes. So simple yet so potent.
  6. Eternal Witness. This was the ultimate graveyard fetch for me. Any card.
  7. Birds of Paradise. Any color Llanowar for same price? This goes in almost ANY deck.
  8. Dark Confidant.

  1. Tarmogoyf. Best green creature ever printed.
  2. The Titans. They're busted in half.
  3. Emrakul, the Aeons Torn. He's just the business.
  4. Stoneforge Mystic. Broke standard along with Jace.
  5. Psychatog defined a format.
  6. Eternal Witness is the lord of recursion.
  7. Birds of Paradise is good in literally every green deck.
  8. Dark Confidant is the third of the overpowered 2-drop cycle here, and the one that started the cycle in the first place.

Rhadamanthus says... #22

I apologize if this sounds overly critical, but it's a strong opinion: Snapcaster Mage is one of the best creature cards ever printed, and you missed big time by not including him in this bracket. I know for a fact there's space for him to be here because for some reason you have multiple slots taken up by cards that are nothing more than combo pieces only used in one gimmicky deck (namely, Painter's Servant and Protean Hulk). Why Vendilion Clique and Phantasmal Image aren't in this list is another big point of confusion for me.

  1. Tarmogoyf wins because =(
  2. The Titans win because even though Morphling is the original Superman, The Titans represent the biggest format impact the game has ever seen from a creature that costs more than 4
  3. Emrakul, the Aeons Torn wins because Servant shouldn't be here
  4. Stoneforge Mystic wins because of the Demonic Tutor / Show and Tell combo in her text box
  5. Psychatog wins because Dr. Teeth
  6. Clone wins because it's just more interesting
  7. Birds of Paradise wins because Hulk shouldn't be here
  8. Dark Confidant wins because he's still a format-defining card in Modern, Legacy, and Vintage
March 18, 2013 1:28 p.m.

KrazyCaley says... #23

@Rhadamanthus - Nah, it's a good critique. The list IS biased towards combo pieces.

Vendilion Clique almost made the list. Phantasmal Image is basically strictly better than Clone, but Clone got points in my book for duration of service.

I do agree that Snapcaster had a place in this bracket. He's seen in every format and has definitely defined decks on his own. I'd have picked him over half the competitors in this bracket, at least.

  1. baneslayer - the goyf is not beating a baneslayer one on one. and if you use the argument it's only 2 mana; then it's only a 0/1. If you have the mana to properly dredge then you have the mana for the angel.
  2. Morphling - morphling with old rules is the best creature ever! new rules, just sell it.
  3. Emrakul, the Aeons Torn - really, painter's servant is a top 16? so many other tourney worthy creatures through the years....Arcbound Ravager and Lin Sivvi, Defiant Hero come to mind
  4. Stoneforge Mystic - good matchup, but I guess I'm more afraid of the beastly equipment fetched and attached than a few extra damage.
  5. Mother of Runes - first turn mother is a major deterrent from burn and spot removal.
  6. Eternal Witness - eternal witness can always get something good. Clone may sit in your hand until something nice tempts you.
  7. Birds of Paradise - awesome mana fixing and acceleration.
  8. Mistbind Clique - not a fan of either, but being forced to pay unknown life kinda sucks for a card. 1 life for 1 card please!
March 18, 2013 6:49 p.m.

1) Tarmogoyf - That... damned... good.

2) The Titans - Mostly because of Grave and Primeval.

3) Emrakul, the Aeons Torn - I mean, his initials are EAT.

4) Bloodbraid Elf - But only the FNM edition.

5) Mother of Runes - Just plain silly.

6) Eternal Witness - Hotness without being completely trashy.

7) Birds of Paradise - Makes the color wheel go round.

8) Dark Confidant - My inner Timmy wants this to be Maralen of the Mournsong, but Bob is just plain epic. He fits into far more decks than The Clique.

SwiftDeath says... #32

1) Tarmogoyf

2) the titans, to much of a powerhouse and although Morphling was OP in the old rules it wasn't banned in any formats like Primeval Titan in EDH. Kresh the Bloodbraided still misses you dude but Kokusho, the Evening Star helped soften the blow.

3) Emrakul, the Aeons Torn hate the eldrazi but you have to admit. he wins games.

4) Stoneforge Mystic

5) Mother of Runes

6) Eternal Witness

7) Birds of Paradise the hulk is only good with the combo Flash deck.

8) Dark Confidant that other card should've been Vendilion Clique not mistbind.

I agree with Rhadamanthus %100 and other cards that are just op creatures couldve been Arcbound Ravager and other powerhouse legacy cards that also highly impacted their standard when legal in their own format.

  1. I will bandwagon Tarmogoyf

  2. Titans!

  3. Emrakul, the Aeons Torn, nuff said.

  4. Stoneforge Mystic is one bad bitch.

  5. Mamma says vote for her

  6. Eternal Witness has witnessed more or less every green commander deck ever.

  7. Birds of Paradise flies over the competition.

8.Having no personal experience with either one, Bob seems dominant.

16 - Baneslayer Angel

2 - Morphling (with damage on the stack)

14 - Painter's Servant - in honor of one of my favorite combos

13 - Bloodbraid Elf - I guess I'm lovin the upsets.

5 - Psychatog

11 - Clone - too classic not to pick

7 - Gotta go with Birds

9 - Clique only because I've never been able to climb on the Bob bandwagon

Zen_Toombs says... #36

(1) Baneslayer Angel. This is a hard one, because Goyf is baller in Modern but unplayable in Commander. Baneslayer wins because she's at least playable in modern and she's great in Commander.

(2) The Titans ( Sun Titan , Frost Titan , Grave Titan , Inferno Titan , Primeval Titan ). The titans are OP in Commander, especially Sun Titan

(3) Emrakul, the Aeons Torn because I pulled him at the pre-release and the judge let me play with the promo. It was awesome. _

(4) I dislike both of these, but I'll go with Stoneforge Mystic

(5) Mother of Runes is silly good.

(6) Eternal Witness. I'm confused why Clone is here instead of the all-but-strictly-better Phyrexian Metamorph. I'd've voted for Metamorph over Witness.

(7) Birds of Paradise is a classic.

(8) Bob is generically great, while the Clique is only playable in a faerie deck. Also, she's super mean, so the prize goes to Bob.

  1. Baneslayer Angel - Good memories, and plenty of easy flavor.
  2. Morphling - Always go for the 6-drop with a utility belt.
  3. She Who Tears the Aeons - Praise thy noodly appendage!
  4. Bloodbraid Elf - Bribes me with <4-drop goodies.
  5. Mother of Runes - She comforts me after an Upheaval.
  6. Eternal Witness - She threatened to withold my Warp World recursions if I said no.
  7. Protean Hulk - Screw the combo, I just like the card advantage.
  8. Dark Confidant - Stronger effect, I think.
