God we should have gone Simic.... look at these awesome cards. Drakewing Krasis ..... Simic Fluxmage ...... and NO RED. I've said it this whole time, Simic is wide open and Boros gets taken too much to try and draft them.

But, since we seem to be going Boros, I would take the Zarichi Tiger , its kinda nice getting 2 hp at the end of every opponents turn.

My vote: Zarichi Tiger

on a minor note, if we were to go Simic, my vote would go to

Simic Fluxmage

As long as there are decent enough cards to take in Red/White, we should keep going that way. I vote for Zarichi Tiger . Also, remember that the packs get passed the other way in pack 2. The more decent boros cards in pack 1, we'll be in better shape.

February 18, 2013 6:16 a.m.

BlunterCube says... #4

Yikes, I was disappointed with the Massive Raid pick, and this is exactly what I knew would happen. This pack is awful. It doesn't look like anybody else is in Simic, so I would either hate-draft Last Thoughts or make a mediocre pick of Zarichi Tiger .

February 18, 2013 6:19 a.m.

Archos7 says... #5

It seems we are going boros with some splash, either black or green (green seemingly most probable), so I would go with Greenside Watcher .

Besides that, I find Undercity Informer a nice one too. It's not bad to defend and you can almost always use your dying creature to mill.

Ugh, this is kind of bad. At this point I think Zarichi Tiger is the pick here. A strong choice, on-color, relevant and useful ability, and sends a strong signal.

February 18, 2013 7:18 a.m.

dcarpntr says... #8

As bad as we think it is, the person who took Sunhome Guildmage and/or Syndic of Tithes after we let those go are probably thinking the same thing. We should take the Zarichi Tiger and keep cutting them off, although I'd much rather have the Fluxmage...

Zarichi Tiger

February 18, 2013 7:57 a.m.

Don't like the choices here. There's no red, and Greenside Watcher is a spineless bear with an ability we'll never get to play. Zarichi Tiger is over-costed and has no synergies with our other picks. That said, it's the only card left in our colors. Gotta take it.

Zarichi Tiger

@Arachnarchist We should get better Boros cards in pack 2. But then we're back to dregs in pack 3. We're facing a very shallow card pool.

I understand that we're drafting boros, but at the same time, we're already splashing green for Gyre Sage . While Zarichi Tiger is in our colors, Greenside Watcher is as well since we're splashing green, and one thing boros needs is cheap guys to trigger battalion. The two mana cost makes is a slightly better pick in my opinion. Granted my draft experience is lacking, but I thought I'd try to contribute.

My vote goes to Greenside Watcher .

February 18, 2013 9:31 a.m.

Drakewing Krasis . We should have been in Simic this whole time. It's wide open and the Krasis is amazingly powerful, especially if you can cheat counters onto it.

February 18, 2013 9:31 a.m.

Drakewing Krasis or Zarichi Tiger ... These are all mediocre cards and those seem the least mediocre...

February 18, 2013 10:09 a.m.

Isn't it too late to go Simic? We'll get the Drakewing in this pack and maybe one other good card from the rest of these packs. Next round, we'll get starved of it. With the third pack, we'll get 4-6 good picks. That's not much of a card pool.

February 18, 2013 10:14 a.m.

lonewolfx says... #15

Ugh - raid was terrible without seeing this pack. Still, mistakes are made in draft.

Pack 2 may or may not be good for boros, having let a Sunhome Guildmage and a Syndic of Tithes pass early. Pack 3 will definitely have strong simic coming round (it looks like gruul's being taken before us here)

The Zarichi Tiger is certainly the 2nd choice in terms of overall pick-quality, but it will find a home in our deck, and pretty much lock us into some white configuration.

The Drakewing Krasis is the strongest card by a long way, but would necessitate a dedicated focus on bant (but hey - we have the prism ... :-/ ) to justify.

Our picks have so far failed to give us any real direction, except a potentially substandard boros deck. At this time, we can't really fluff around, and I call for making a brave (if foolish) switch to simic/white. Tiger is safe, it's just not going to give us a winning deck.

TheBearShaker says... #17

it's no where near too late to go simic. if we start heading simic now, we can still splash the red cards we have picked so far as well as pick up some gruul along the way. Alternatively, we could even continue to draft bant with solid mono white picks. Not to mention that we have two cards picked already that can fix our colors. I say we need to accept the way the cards are coming at us and jump to simic. Hell, there are 3 strong, albeit not amazing, picks for simic here: Frilled Oculus , Simic Fluxmage , and Drakewing Krasis are all solid picks. Also there were some decent picks in pack 1 and 2 that have a good chance to wheel around.

for the sake for voting for a card that already has a few votes I am going to pick Drakewing Krasis , but if the votes start piling up for either of the other two I listed count me for them hahaha

Spker says... #19

Simic Fluxmage solid blue card that is synergistic with Gyre Sage , frankly, we could cut our loses here with boros and move on to a solid simic deck. It's still possible, this is just the first pack, so we don't have to worry too much about the relevance of the white and red cards we have now. worse comes to worse we do have the Prophetic Prism , so going rainbow isn't that bad of an option.

February 18, 2013 10:50 a.m.

jkarnes says... #20

Drakewing Krasis and switch to Simic with a red splash into Gruul for creatures which continue to evolve us (and bloodrush too). If we see another Leyline Phantom we might want to take it for the continuous evolution idea.

Alright, so we're in a tough position. We've got two solid white picks, two red removal cards, one fixer, and one green ramp.We could still go in pretty much any direction and be okay since we'll be able to play at minimum three of those cards. With that said, let's just look at power levels here.

Black and white are really weak here. Not much sense taking any of those. We're left with some mono blue, Greenside Watcher and Drakewing Krasis The only real picks here look to be Simic Fluxmage and Drakewing Krasis . In terms of our color pool, Drakewing Krasis is the better choice since it's an aggressive body that will be splashed along with Gyre Sage , leading us into bant or RUG. Simic Fluxmage has a nice ability, but one that will probably hardly matter and requires some building around.

My vote goes to possibly Bant colors with Drakewing Krasis .

At this point, we're going to get cut simic next pack -- taking the krasis muddles the signals pretty terribly. We're some kind of naya midrange; I have to vote for the Greenside Watcher . It's a bear, it's sometimes ramp. If we learned anything from the Pro tour drafts, it's that filling your 2-drop spot consistently is super important, and that Zarichi Tiger is terrible.

I don't believe it's too late to switch to Simic. Don't fret; we'll carve something out for ourselves somehow. If we were to take up Simic at this point, we should take Drakewing Krasis over Simic Fluxmage . We can continue to avoid blue with Greenside Watcher , although it's on the weaker side and its ability may or may not help us. None of the other cards in this pack are under my consideration.

landot brings up a good point, although we can't be certain that our draftmates have picked up on our signals so far. And yes, Zarichi Tiger is awful. Please don't pick it.

No opinion yet.

sewellius says... #27

I'd like to weigh in on the voting for Simic Fluxmage , Drakewing Krasis as a second choice. I agree that we will likely be seeing more good Simic cards (if not every pick necessarily) and splashing white for a Bant deck would give us plenty of options to pick out. Especially if we are likely to get intermittent Simic and White/Boros picks passed to us. I think the majority would still be comfortable with Bant.

About the Massive Raid , I think the double red cost is the worst part about it. Hard to use unless we go very strongly red. Which we have not done hardly at all.

February 18, 2013 1:20 p.m.

omen37 says... #28

This is the 7th pick it is not to late to switch from boros to simic and still keep a strong deck. Simic Fluxmage is a good card and synergizes great with Gyre Sage but from what I have seen we do not have anything that will neccesitate us needing a ton of green mana. If we do pick up some bomb we can probably find another Simic Fluxmage in a later pack. My pick goes for Drakewing Krasis because if we can find a few more we can easily have a few 3cmc threats that our opponents will have to answer.

My vote Drakewing Krasis .

mccracka says... #29

Greenside Watcher . I think we're too late to start going blue. The watcher keeps us in our naya colors, is an early beater, and might even be ramp if we get a couple gates. I don't think we can rely on good simic cards being in the rest of the packs. I think if we stick with what we got going we can build a half decent naya deck

Vote for Drakewing Krasis

February 18, 2013 2:17 p.m.

I'd pretty much have to agree with the sentiment, "We screwed up picking Massive Raid . But we did, so..." Given that we signalled that blue is wide open and red is not, we can no longer realistically expect Simic to do anything for us. It is necessary now to just make the best Naya deck we can, essentially hoping that we get good green stuff. Greenside Watcher is easily the best option we have from Naya as a) it is a two-drop, b) it can occasionally ramp and we will realistically have to take a Gate at some point, and c) Zarichi Tiger is a terrible card.

February 18, 2013 2:23 p.m.

I haven't seen a good reason to take Fluxmage over Krasis yet. Krasis is a flyer with 3 power. It will win games singlehandedly. Even BREAD says so. Why would we take Fluxmage over it?

February 18, 2013 2:36 p.m.

Spker says... #34

Fluxmage has versatility, and will synergize with any creature we put out. sure enough other flyers will appear, and the potential to ramp for more mana will also gives us a chance to play bigger, more powerful spells. a lot of spell do require colorless mana, so why waste our lands when we can easily fill those colorless spots with mana from Gyre Sage ?

Drakewing Krasis . Our choices in this pack are rather disappointing; might as well entertain the possibility of splashing blue, though my main motive is to dull the "Go Simic" signal being screamed in these packs.

February 18, 2013 3:07 p.m.

Since no red is being given to us now, I say we cut our loses and go bant. Drakewing Krasis is the better card here, but I would also go for Simic Fluxmage or Frilled Oculus

Reasons:

Frilled Oculus : decent 2-drop that can get be a useful blocker through its pump ability.

Simic Fluxmage : decent Evolve creature that can move the counters to another one of our creatures (Would not be my 3rd pick for this pack)

Drakewing Krasis : 3-drop for a Flying Trample. It is great and if we get passed another Simic Fluxmage later, we will be in business

My vote: Go Bant and pick up Drakewing Krasis

After a little more thought, I think Drakewing Krasis is the stronger pick here. The fluxmage would have some great synergy with really any creatures that will trigger it's Evolve, but the Krasis is sounding like it's own beater-wincon that we probably don't want to get away.

If we draft the tiger this pick, we're dead meat. Let's go simic, and maybe splash red(Mugging , but probably not Massive Raid ). We need to do this. I really don't understand the early simic resistance. But I think it's inescapable now.

Drakewing or Fluxmage. Can't decide yet.

February 18, 2013 8:44 p.m.

Glen654 says... #45

I've nearly given up on this draft debate.

I think that gatecrash is a very difficult format to draft, and when we're at the point where people are disagreeing so much with eachother, we can't draft coherently.

I think at this point sticking with boros is a better plan, there is no reason to go into simic, gyre sage isn't nearly as exciting as frontline medic, and at this point there is nothing from pack 1 that will help us with the simic plan. Pack 2, we will get shipped boros cards because we cut the people to our left, and if we send completely incoherent signals, we could be cut simic or boros pack 2.

I say we go for the best card in the pack. Drakewing Krasis .

February 18, 2013 8:49 p.m.

yousquiddinme says... #46

Let's go back to Simic. I don't think Pack 1 establishes a commitment to a guild like you guys seem to think. Drakewing Krasis here, and move back into Simic, which is a much more open guild.

February 18, 2013 9:02 p.m.

cartwheelnurd says... #47

At this point we regret not taking the shambleshark. Simic seems wide open as far as we know, and Drakewing Krasis is awesome. Playing bant colors in this won;t be horrible, and RUG also works well. We have a prism so we can try to do three colors, so Its not a horrible loss to start picking whatever's good in the colors we have already. I really think we should jumpon the opportunity to play the medic, because simic can be just as aggroey as you want it to. seeing a Drakewing Krasis this late means that nobody really wants it, and getting a few more really good simic picks could make us in a nice position. I vote Drakewing Krasis because it is amazing regardless of the other simic cards, like ones with evolve, that you pull.

February 18, 2013 9:59 p.m.

KrazyCaley says... #48

Drakewing Krasis commands the support of the plurality, and the general sense seems to be that we should be in Simic-type colors. Krasis is the pick.

February 19, 2013 1:56 a.m.

vic says... #49

Another thing to remember is that we have not seen the wheel yet either. It's possible that we may see some of those early simic picks come back. They were useful if you're in simic, but not "must-pick" cards for someone else in blue or green(dimir or gruul). And if other people downstream opened a good rare in another guild, they may not have gone simic(at least not early on). It might take some luck, but it's not unrealistic.
