Game 1

Ethereal wins the toss and plays first.

He keeps his opener.

Caley mulligans an opening hand with no land in it.

Caley keeps a six hand of 2x Evolving Wilds, Geistflame, Elder of Laurels, Loyal Cathar  Flip, Deranged Outcast.

Not good, but it'll have to do. What happened, basic lands?

T1

Ethereal plays Forest for Young Wolf and passes.

Caley draws Plains. He plays Evolving Wilds, sacrifices it for a Plains, and passes.

T2

Ethereal plays Forest. He attacks with Young Wolf and passes. (Ethereal 20, Caley 19).

Caley draws Niblis of the Mist. He plays Loyal Cathar  Flip and passes.

T3

Ethereal plays Forest. He attacks with Young Wolf. Caley blocks with Loyal Cathar  Flip. Ethereal casts Spidery Grasp in response, destroying/returning Cathar. Ethereal passes.

One advantage I've noticed about Young Wolf is that I'm less suspicious of combat tricks than I should be with it. Of COURSE it's attacking! It's a 1/1 with undying! HIGHLY unsuspicious!

Caley draws Wild Hunger. He plays Evolving Wilds and passes.

T4

Ethereal plays Forest. He attacks with Young Wolf and hits. (Ethereal 20, Caley 18). He casts Heavy Mattock and another Young Wolf, then passes. End step, Caley gets a Forest with Evolving Wilds.

Caley draws Plains and plays it. He casts Elder of Laurels and passes.

T5

Ethereal plays a Forest. He attaches Heavy Mattock to one of his werewolves, then casts Villagers of Estwald  Flip and passes.

Caley draws Somberwald Spider. He casts Deranged Outcast and passes.

T6

Ethereal plays Forest and passes.

In Caley's upkeep, Villagers of Estwald  Flip transforms. Caley draws Thalia, Guardian of Thraben. He casts her and passes.

T7

Ethereal casts yet another Young Wolf and reattaches Heavy Mattock to Howlpack of Estwald  Flip, then passes.

Caley draws Forest and plays it. He attacks with Unhallowed Cathar  Flip. Ethereal blocks with a Young Wolf. The Cathar dies and the Wolf comes back as a 2/2. Caley casts Somberwald Spider with Morbid and passes.

T8

Ethereal does nothing and passes.

Caley draws and casts Niblis of the Mist tapping down Howlpack of Estwald  Flip. Then he attacks with Somberwald Spider and hits. (Caley 18, Ethereal 16). Caley passes.

T9

Ethereal casts another Young Wolf and passes.

Caley draws Increasing Savagery. He casts it targeting Thalia, Guardian of Thraben, then attacks with her. Ethereal chop blocks with a 1/1 Young Wolf, triggering its undying. Caley passes.

T10

Ethereal plays a Forest and passes.

Caley draws Wild Hunger. He attacks with Thalia. A 1/1 Wolf blocks. Caley casts Wild Hunger on Thalia, hitting for 9 trample damage. (Caley 18, Ethereal 7). Caley passes.

T11

Ethereal casts Avacyn's Pilgrim and passes.

Caley draws Kessig Cagebreakers. He attacks with Thalia, Guardian of Thraben. Another block from a 1/1 Wolf, but Caley shows Ethereal Wild Hunger and Ethereal concedes.

Sideboarding

No changes.

Game 2

Ethereal plays first and keeps his opener.

Caley mulligans an opener of Plains, Wild Hunger, Niblis of the Mist, Hollowhenge Spirit, Rally the Peasants, Deranged Outcast, and Increasing Savagery.

Where did all my land go?

Caley keeps a 6 hand of Forest, Mountain, Plains, Evolving Wilds, Rally the Peasants, and Thraben Heretic.

Very funny, deck. Very funny.

T1

Ethereal plays Forest for Traveler's Amulet and passes.

Caley draws Forest. He plays Evolving Wilds and get a Plains with it, then passes.

T2

Ethereal plays a Forest and casts Scorned Villager  Flip, then passes.

Caley draws Plains, plays Forest, casts Thraben Heretic, then passes.

T3

Ethereal plays a Forest, casts Young Wolf, then uses Traveler's Amulet to get a Forest, then passes.

I'm confused. In a mono-colored deck, wouldn't just a forest be strictly better? Maybe he wants to thin.

Caley draws Loyal Cathar  Flip. He plays a Plains and casts the Cathar, then passes.

T4

Ethereal plays Forest and casts Young Wolf, then attacks with his other Young Wolf. Caley blocks with Loyal Cathar  Flip. Ethereal casts Spidery Grasp on the Wolf to kill the Cathar/transform it and save the Wolf. Ethereal passes.

Caley draws Midnight Guard. He plays Mountain. He attacks with Unhallowed Cathar  Flip, which hits. (Caley 20, Ethereal 18). He casts Midnight Guard and passes.

He can't block and trigger undying so long as Thraben Heretic is at the ready

T5

Ethereal does nothing and passes.

In Caley's upkeep, Scorned Villager  Flip transforms. Caley draws Increasing Savagery. He casts it on Midnight Guard, then attacks with it, hitting. (Caley 20, Ethereal 11). Then he passes.

T6

Ethereal plays a Forest and attacks with Young Wolf, which hits. (Caley 19, Ethereal 11). Then he passes.

I'm not falling for that trick, my friend.

Caley draws Ulvenwald Bear. He attacks with Unhallowed Cathar  Flip and Midnight Guard, hitting. (Caley 20, Ethereal 2). Caley passes.

T7

Ethereal plays a Forest and concedes, showing me a hand of Gravetiller Wurm and Grim Flowering.

Thoughts

Thraben Heretic seems to have more or less won me that last game, in a strange way.

Apparently Ethereal was counting on drawing more Hunger of the Howlpacks than he did.

Good recovery by our deck from two very bad starting hands to come away with a 2-0 match win.

While Grim has a better overall match record we have relatively similar game records. Ours is 10-5, while Grims is 11-6. Good luck Caley!

Was there some reason in Game 1 that the Unhallowed CatharMTG Card: Unhallowed Cathar wasn't attacking at the very first opportunity? Your opponent had nothing, as far as I can tell.

Good games, though. I'm glad the deck turned out to be better than what the first round suggested.

@Rhadamanthus - I think avoiding triggering his Young WolfMTG Card: Young Wolf was on my mind.

My bad, I forgot Spidery GraspMTG Card: Spidery Grasp untapped the creature. Good call.
