Game 1

Caley wins the toss and plays first. He keeps an opening hand of 2x Plains, Forest, Mountain, Geistflame, Kessig Cagebreakers, Niblis of the Mist.

Doesn't get much better than that.

Max keeps his opener.

T1

Caley plays Mountain and passes.

Max plays a Mountain and passes.

T2

Caley draws Thalia, Guardian of Thraben. He plays a Plains, casts her and passes.

Max plays a Mountain and passes.

T3

Caley draws Forest and plays it. He casts Niblis of the Mist tapping nothing. He attacks with Thalia and hits. (Caley 20, Max 18). He passes.

Max plays a Mountain, casts Riot Devils, and passes.

T4

Caley draws Scorned Villager  Flip. He plays a Forest and casts it. Then he attacks with Thalia, Guardian of Thraben, which hits. (Caley 20, Max 16). He passes.

Max plays a Mountain and casts Fires of Undeath targeting Thalia, Guardian of Thraben, killing her. He passes.

T5

Caley draws Deranged Outcast. He plays Plains. He attacks with Niblis of the Mist and hits. (Caley 20, Max 14). He passes.

Max plays a Mountain and casts Pitchburn Devils. Then he passes.

T6

Caley draws Loyal Cathar  Flip. He casts Deranged Outcast. Then he attacks with Kessig Cagebreakers. He gets one 2/2 Wolf. Max double blocks it with the two Devils. Caley uses Deranged Outcast's ability to pump Cagebreakers, sacrificing Scorned Villager  Flip after tapping her for mana. Caley assigns Riot Devils to die and Pitchburn Devils to take 2 damage. Cagebreakers themselves take 5 damage. Max takes 2 damage. (Caley 20, Max 12). Caley passes priority on his post-combat main phase. Max uses his priority to cast Fling on his Pitchburn Devils. He targets the Fling damage at Kessig Cagebreakers and the Pitchburn Devils damage at the Niblis of the Mist. Cagebreakers, Devils, and Niblis all die. Caley passes.

Good play by him. He wisely waited until after I lost the Scorned Villager  Flip mana to use Fling. If he hadn't, I would have been able to pump Kessig Cagebreaker again with Deranged Outcast and he would have had to use his Pitchburn Devils damage to make sure the Cagebreaker was dead. This way, he gets to kill Niblis for free. Still, at least his board is clear for now.

Max plays Hanweir Watchkeep  Flip and passes.

T7

Caley draws Wild Hunger. He attacks with both creatures. Hanweir Watchkeep  Flip blocks Deranged Outcast. Caley casts Wild Hunger on it, killing the watchkeep and saving the Outcast, though dealing no damage. Wolf token hits. (Caley 20, Max 10). Caley casts Loyal Cathar  Flip and passes.

Max casts Pyreheart Wolf and passes.

Max was becoming visibly frustrated with his draws; I intuited that he really wanted a land for something awful and I should end this game quickly.

T8

Caley draws Elder of Laurels. He attacks with everything. Max blocks Deranged Outcast with Pyreheart Wolf. Caley uses Deranged Outcast's ability sacrificing itself to pump the Wolf token to 4/4. The token and the Cathar hit. (Caley 20, Max 4). Caley casts Elder of Laurels and passes.

Max draws a Mountain and casts Kessig Wolf, then passes.

T9

Caley draws Hollowhenge Spirit. He casts Geistflame killing Kessig Wolf and Max concedes.

Sideboarding

No changes.

Game 2

Max plays first and keeps his opener.

Caley keeps an opening hand of Forest, Plains, Scorned Villager  Flip, Elder of Laurels, Midnight Haunting, Geistflame, Hollowhenge Spirit.

T1

Max plays Mountain and passes.

Caley draws Plains, plays Forest, and passes.

T2

Max plays Mountain and passes.

Caley draws Thraben Heretic. He plays Plains and casts Scorned Villager  Flip, then passes.

T3

Max plays a Mountain and casts Forge Devil destroying Scorned Villager  Flip. (Caley 20, Max 19). He passes.

Caley draws Forest. He plays it and casts Elder of Laurels, then passes.

T4

Max plays a Mountain and passes.

Caley draws Travel Preparations. He attacks with Elder of Laurels. Max blocks with Forge Devil. Caley casts Midnight Haunting for two Spirit tokens. Max responds with Fires of Undeath, finishing off Elder of Laurels. Caley passes.

Arguably a bad play by me. I should have realized something was up when he cast nothing on his turn and then chop blocked, but I figured he thought that Forge Devil's usefulness was over and he might as well soak up some damage.

T5

Max plays Haunted Fengraf and casts Warden of the Wall, then passes.

Caley draws and plays Forest. He casts Travel Preparations for his spirits and flashes it back, making them into 3/3s. He attacks with them and hits. (Caley 20, Max 11). He passes.

T6

Max taps out for Geistcatcher's Rig, destroying a Spirit token. Max passes.

It's even destroying a spirit token. This could not be more perfect. Seriously, I feel like this was all designed. Somewhere, some Magic designer is chuckling quietly to himself that this play is happening at drafts everywhere. Well played, sir.

Caley draws Deranged Outcast. He casts it, then attacks with his Spirit token and hits. (Caley 20, Max 9). Then he casts Thraben Heretic and passes.

T7

Max plays and casts Nearheath Stalker, then passes.

Caley draws Rally the Peasants. He attacks with the Spirit token and pumps it with Rally the Peasants. (Caley 20, Max 4). Then he passes.

T8

Max casts Mondronen Shaman  Flip and attacks with Nearheath Stalker, hitting. (Caley 16, Max 4). Max passes.

Caley draws and plays Plains. He attacks with the Spirit token. Max blocks it with Warden of the Wall, which dies. Caley passes.

T9

Max plays a Mountain and casts Curse of Bloodletting. Then he casts Nightbird's Clutches targeting the Deranged Outcast and Thraben Heretic. He attacks with everything. Caley casts Hollowhenge Spirit removing Geistcatcher's Rig from combat and blocking Mondronen Shaman  Flip, killing it and the Spirit. Forge Devil and Nearheath Stalker both hit. (Caley 11, Max 4). Max concedes.

Close call there. Thanks, Hollowhenge!

Thoughts

  • Ecto-1, baby.

  • Not the best play from me this round, but we still pulled it out. Feel like I never got to see what Max's deck was REALLY capable of in this game, but that's probably for the best. That last play was pretty gnarly by itself.

We seem to be moving pretty well now.

G3 T9: should have flipped due to inactivity on Caley's part which would make it a 5/5 and casting the Hallowhenge Spirit deal 2 damage via the flipped Shaman and then doubled through Curse of BloodlettingMTG Card: Curse of Bloodletting.

I'm pretty sure that the blocks would have been different had this been the case and the game might have gone in Max's favor.

Granted, the cast of Curse of BloodlettingMTG Card: Curse of Bloodletting and Nightbird's ClutchesMTG Card: Nightbird's Clutches would have flipped the shaman back over... but it would still have been a 5/5 during the combat step (which is relevant).
