Ok so after probing people a little to see if this was a good idea, I decided to move forward with this article.

The idea here is to see if the community could all come together to build a Commander deck for actual play based around a small set up. So lets see how this goes. I will provide you all with the commander I wish to use and the general idea that i was shooting for. I will then give you all a link to the deck as it develops. Some cards are already in the maybeboard but none are in the main other than the Commander. I will also provide a bit about the player and my playing style/background to inform you all as well. People will discuss below and see how we can make this deck work. As I see enough support and rationale for a card I will add it to the mainboard.

I will then trade for the cards needed on the site so that I can build and play the deck for real. I will have to buy or trade for all the cards since I own like 100 cards from the last draft I entered and that is it. Though I want the best deck possible and best cards possible so do not hold back suggestions due to price. So here we go!

The commander

I selected merieke di berit because she was a cheap (CMC-wise) commander, that helped with control in a big way and that allowed 3 colors in the rest of the deck. I figure that i could easily build a deck around her, taking into account the interactions with her and many different cards for either controlling creatures or killing them.

The concept

I want this deck to be competitive. not for tournaments, but I want to be able to go to my local shop and clean up. Then maybe competition.

I kinda have 3 concepts that all work together here that are all in the realm of board control. I figure that I could have kill spells and permission spells, but in addition use some tap/untap trick in combination with my commander to steal/kill creatures. I also wanted a subtheme of Control Magic to the deck. So really what I am shooting for is a convergence of the following cards:

  • Control Magic
  • Counterspell
  • Terror
  • Twiddle
    • Now while these cards are the theme behind the deck, we may not choose to actually use them. They are just the concepts. There are many great spells related to these concepts. ##The player That's me. I have been playing since Alpha/Beta-ish time. I was rated fairly high by the time of Revised through Visions came around. I was leading in local tourneys and leagues and qualified for the pro tour. I stopped playing after that. I slightly online played during Kamigawa. About 2 years ago I joined tappedout because it seemed like a cool site that I could read up on new decks while still not playing myself. I draft sometimes, once every six months or so. When I used to play a lot of constructed I played early mill control with actual Millstones and board wipes and Armageddon and all that fun stuff. I moved from that to Stasis lock and then Stasistog. I am a control/permission player. I want to win but usually in an interesting way. I am a Johnny by nature, but can play other paradigms as needed. I hope that give you all enough information to work off of. ##The deck

Sen Triplets , Arcanis the Omnipotent , Teferi, Mage of Zhalfir , say i win in cool ways for these colours. Sphinx of the Steel Wind = akroma sphinx never a bad thing. the land you need to be dirty with your general is card:Minamo, School at Water's Edge and also Deserted Temple . and of course Mind Over Matter will work too also enchanting your general with Flickerform and have some fun there too :-) i think that Cowardice and Cloud Cover could work too better than paying 5 or more for your general if someone targets her IMO. to be properly horrible Capsize and Forbid = win late game

Well IMO commander gets stupidly awesome in multi-player games and she is one of the best.

I would look at exploiting her with Intruder Alarm , Stonybrook Schoolmaster , and Paradise Mantle , what is better than infinite mana, infinite creatures, and having your commander remove every creature in play that you don't want in play.

Freed from the Real , card:Pemmin's Aura, and other untap type cards make her a great continued removal creature.

I'd also look at Dovescape + Guile , Enchanted Evening + Aura Thief , Necropotence +Words of Worship , and other stupid combos.

Frost Titan helps keep stuff tapped.Strip Mine and/or Tectonic Edge and/or Wasteland for dealing with troublesome non basics.

Speaking of troublesome nonbasics.Maze of Ith , Cabal Coffers , and that land that makes all lands swamps

Also Liliana Vess because a repeatable tutor should not be ignored.

Did you choose Merieke Ri Berit because I suggested her or was she already your general? :D

Crab Umbra , in the vein of Freed from the Real and card:Pemmin's Aura. It loses points for not being as versatile or as cheap to use, but it gets some back because it protects Bruit once it's on her.

I'm pretty excited about this, seems like fun. I'll have a more substantive comment later.

add in Psychic Surgery for free control works better thank you would think!, ofc you always need card:Sensei's Divining Top i would also suggest adding some tutors too the favourites being Demonic Tutor and Diabolic Tutor (I say the latter because in EDH its high mana cost compared to say Vampiric Tutor doesnt really matter)

One tip: Merieke Ri Berit is an unpopular general because it can lead to so many un-fun plays. Because of the hate it will generate, be sure to have ways to protect your general (hexproof/shroud, indestructibility) and have cards in the deck that make EVERYONE at the table happy.

For Lands:

I would look at adding Arcane Sanctum .

I would remove card:Dromar's Cavern, its just bad. Run a City of Brass instead you got 40 life. I am also a big fan of Shimmering Grotto and Unstable Frontier .

You need to remove Karakas as it is banned in commander.

November 29, 2011 2:21 p.m.

squire1 says... #24

is it banned? Damn it! that would be sweet. Expensive but sweet.

See I think card:Dromar's Cavern is better than Arcane Sanctum

If you consider making your opponent so frustrated that quit the game a legitimate win con consider Winter Orb
