Greetings! We had a lot of great submissions and we thank you all for your submissions. Below you will find the ones that made it through the grinder. Time to vote on the red rares of this set. Please place 3 votes, one each for an Artifact, a Creature, and a Spell. Please read through all of the cards and suggestions for changes and all of the guidelines for voting. Thank you for all of the great participation people, keep it up. Oh, and we did have to eliminate a few for specific reasons - no colored artifact creatures were allowed, and Kicker is not an evergreen keyword.

Sorok Red Rare Finalists

*** #Artifacts
##Blade of Dwarven Fury
####Design Team Concerns
One concern we had was that this actually took away the mechanic that was introduced in sorok, but we thought it was an interesting twist.
####Design Team Suggestions
no real changes suggested, maybe cost tweaking.
##Blades of the Unstoppable
####Design Team Concerns
The design team had concerns that this was over-powered, but considering some of the cards wizards is putting out ...
####Design Team Suggestions
Either remove Trample or Doublestrike, with a reduction in cost.
##Scrap Iron Forge
####Design Team Concerns
We had a concern about the first ability being red, and perhaps over-costed.
####Design Team Suggestions
Reduced casting cost, perhaps remove the first ability?
##Staff of Goblin Devouring
####Design Team Concerns
We loved the flavor of this card, but maybe too wordy?
####Design Team Suggestions
remove the first ability and decrease casting cost.
*** #Spells
##Goblin Workshop
####Design Team Concerns
Might be a little underpowered.
####Design Team Suggestions
Have the equipment come into play attached to the goblin.
##Noggle Laboratory
####Design Team Concerns
Some power concerns.
####Design Team Suggestions
Change damage done to 2.
##War Flame of the Goblins
####Design Team Concerns
Might be OP.

####Design Team Concerns
None, we thought it was a great twist on a classic card.
####Design Team Suggestions
We were good with this as is.
##Mountain's Fury
####Design Team Concerns
No complaints.
####Design Team Suggestions
No suggestion was made.
*** #Creatures
##Dwarven Smith

####Design Team Suggestions
make it a 1/1 or 2/2 and have the ability cost 1R.
##Goblin Gearsnatcher Trio
####Design Team Concerns
Some concern was shown about the p/t, but we loved the last ability.
####Design Team Suggestions
3/1 perhaps?
##Zimyin, the Windborne Flame
####Design Team Concerns
P/T wasn't drakey, and under-costed.
####Design Team Suggestions
Power and toughness change to 2/4 (like the other drakes) and remove the ability.
##Pez, Goblin Dispenser
####Design Team Concerns
We thought it might be undercosted, or a bit over-powered. But we loved the name.
####Design Team Suggestions
Raise the casting cost to 2,2R and tweak the costs / tokens produced by the ability.
##Smart Goblin Metalsmith
####Design Team Concerns
We liked this one as is.
####Design Team Suggestions
see above.
##Drot Bonilth, the Great Meteor Invoker
####Design Team Concerns
All sets have rares you kinda don't want to open in a pack, but this has goblin flavor for days..
####Design Team Suggestions
None.

Inspiration and creative parameters or Sorok

Sorok is a land of vast mountains, lush valleys, rushing rivers and large lakes.

Creatures of Sorok

Dwarves

Dwarves are the major power in Sorok. Their wizards and artisans use the gems and materials gathered by the miners to make powerful equipment. Dwarves are known to be stubborn, loyal, a bit ponderous, and resolute. Dwarves live in the mountains they are born from, having vast underground cities. Dwarven nomads search the tunnels for rareties and treasures, while Dwarven scouts keep an eye the other races.

Goblins

Not your average goblins by any means, the Goblins of Sorok are actually somewhat intelligent and restrained, if a bit out there. They have wizards and artisans that use pilfered materials to make equipment that is well, a bit risky. Their settlements are normally in the valleys, with tall (if shaky) homes. Goblin advisers are selected from the most intelligent of the tribes and mostly try and rein in the more outlandish ideas of the others.

Merfolk

The Merfolk of Sorok inhabit the deep clear lakes of Sorok using the rivers as fast transportation (at least downhill). While not as numerous as the Dwarves or Goblins, the Merfolk are well versed in the control magics and hold their own in the rare conflicts.

Noggles

Noggles are the red headed stepchild of Sorok. Living near the Goblins, they tend to be the pranksters, rabble-rousers, and thieves of the societies.

Birds

Birds are abundant in Sorok, both large and small. Everything from eggs to rocs in the high reaches.

Drakes

Drakes make their homes in the mountains and caves. Some drakes have been known to be raised from the egg by adventurous goblin riders.

Griffins

Griffins are one the major predators in Sorok, and have mostly driven the drakes off the high reaches. While not sentient, the Griffins are highly intelligent and serious in manner.

Themes/Keywords/Mechanics.

The major themes and keywords of Sorok are : Bounce, Colored Non-Creature Artifacts and Equipment, Counter-spelling, Double Strike, Flying, Haste, Legends, Resolve, and Vigilance.

Clamp has been renamed Resolve (Spells, counters, or abilities cannot change this creatureÂ’s power and toughness from their printed values)

Voting

Here's what we're looking for:

  1. Each person should cast three votes (1 each) for your favorite Artifact, Creature, and Spell.
  2. Each person should critique the card(s) for which they have voted. Agree or disagree with the Head Team's suggestions and include any other ideas you have to improve the card. You may also make comments about other cards aside from the card that you voted for. The Head team will take into considerations all comments posted about all cards.

The deadline for voting is Fri, January 21st at 11:59 p.m.

Artifact vote: Blades of the Unstoppable. Maybe change it to first strike and trample?

Spell vote: Blind Aggression. The wording doesn't seem right, but I love the premise.

Creature vote: Smart Goblin Metalsmith. Should it be giving itself +1/+1 and double strike, though? How about "Other equipped Goblins get..."

I personally like the flavor of Staff of Goblin Devouring but do agree that the words look a bit crammed onto the card. I love the first effect of searching for the goblin but agree it probably has to go due to text space. If it loses the first effect I vote that the CMC becomes: 1RR since you lose the instant +1 upon resolving it that you would have had with the first effect and that alone is well worth 2 CMC to me.

I like War Flame of the Goblins as the spell but feel it is a bit overpowered. Maybe if it cost RR plus the sac to copy the spell it would be less broken.

I love the name of Pez, Goblin Dispenser and think if it doesn't win it should be reduced in power a bit and added anyway just for the name's epicness.

I however will vote for Drot Bonilth, the Great Meteor Invoker. I think that while a bit scary to play it could be abused in the right kind of deck. I think every set needs a card like this that has not so much appeal at first glance but tons when you consider some deck types that can abuse cards like them. Imagine a creature light deck with life gain and mana ramp. Seems much better no? Besides it seems very much like an ability a goblin wizard would wield. His name could be shortened a bit perhaps, maybe Drot Bonilth, the Meteor Invoker?

My votes are: 1. Staff of Goblin Devouring 2. War Flame of the Goblins 3. Drot Bonilth, the Great Meteor Invoker

1) Blades of the Unstoppable

-Maybe make it cost 2RR and remove trample.

2) Goblin Workshop

-Maybe you can make it tap 3 untapped goblins to cast an equipment rather than paying its mana cost and/or equip.

3) Dwarven Smith

-I see this card as being a sort of Elvish Piper for equipment. So maybe make it cost 3R and keep the ability as is. Definitely reduce power and toughness... i think maybe 1/1.

my votes ---

scrap iron forge - first should be removed, (even though it's a cool idea)

goblin workshop - put in two goblins, or attach the equipment immediately. Or something like that.

smart goblin metalsmith - very solid card, pretty sick

Artifact: Scrap Iron Forge

I don't like all of the artifacts - They are all either OP or too complicated. That is why I like this card. It's getting a little into greet (Omnath, Locus of Mana ) but it's simple and straight to the point.

Enchantment: Mountain's Fury

This might be my most favorite rare in the set. It's extremely red and has tons of flavor. IronHead, I salute you.

Creature: Goblin Gearsnatcher Trio

This was a tough pick - way too many designers overchoking on the complexity and brokenness. This little card might be too deja-vu triggering (Ogre Geargrabber ) but it reasons a stable and strong design point.

My Votes:

Scrap Iron Forge - Sounds like a lot of fun for red decks. I would agree to take out the first ability and reduce the cost. For this card to even maybe be usable it can only cost a maximum of 4 and a minimum of 3. I would say either 2RR or 1RRR.

Blind Aggression - Very interesting card to say the least. This card would probably cause awesome blue/red control decks to crop up if it were ever made. Very versitile card. The wording should probably be "Copy target instant or sorcery. (You do not choose new targets for the copy)"

Pez, Goblin Dispenser - Amazing concept and amazing name. I would suggest keeping the casting cost as it is. I believe the first and second abilities should not grant haste and the third ability should be changed to "Put 6 1/1 goblin creature tokens onto the battlefield. Those creatures gain haste until the beginning of the next end step." Those changes would take the power level down a notch and leave it right where it should be.

January 17, 2011 9:09 p.m.

Scrap Iron Forge- make it all mana isn't lost.

Blind aggression- as is

Zimyin, the Windborne Flame- design team's suggestions.

Goblin Gear Snatcher - Its a nasty way to steal/destroy someone's good equipment.

Blind Aggression - Solid and versatile.

this round of voting was kind of tough.

Artifact:

Blades of the unstoppable. it definitely needs to lose double strike a sacrifice effect that can trigger twice seems OP to me an option could be to replace double strike with first strike. if it gets first strike it should cost 3,RR. if it only gets trample it should cost 2,RR.

Spell:

Goblin Workshop. What about it producing a goblin token whenever you cast an artifact spell rather than just equipment spells this would make the card more usable and less narrow in decks.

Creature:

Drot Bonilth. this guy just oozes goblin flavor. he may not be the best card but he just may be one of the most fun cards to play. plus he pairs well with card:Krark's Thumb.

i really liked the staff of goblin devouring flavor wise but ultimately the blades won out. it should probably lose the first ability so the card doesn't looked so cramped.

one last thing these two sentences seem to contradict one another just thought i'd point this out.

Any critiques made on cards for which you did not vote will NOT be put into consideration from the Head Team. You may also make comments about other cards aside from the card that you voted for. The Head team will take into considerations all comments posted about all cards.

Artifact: Staff of Goblin Devouring. You could cut down on the text by changing the name of the card, which is repeated 3 times in the text, but removing the '2 power or less' clause of the first ability, by replacing the second ability with 'if cardname is unattached, it becomes equipped on target Goblin.' and even though it's flavorful, you don't need to change the critter to a wizard subtype -- I like the idea of this card, but it looks like one of those awful Fallen Empires cards with 4-point text that should come with a magnifying glass.

Spell: Mountain's Fury. I love this card --red needs a boardwiper, and it sets up interesting decisions about whether to hit the opponent or kill his Planeswalker. a non-splashable earthquake that gets flyers. perfect.

Creature: Zimyin, the Windborne Flame. A strong red flyer that isn't a dragon. so maybe the last ability is overkill, but he should have something that makes him worthy of being a legendary rare; if it were 3/4, double strike, itcould still go toe-to-toe with the dragons, angels, demons, etc. and then jack the cost up to 3RR.

Blades of the unstoppable gets this one for artifact. My suggestion keep everything as is except for the equip cost which should be raised to (6).This way it will not be too overpowered but still outrageously awesome.

Blind Aggression gets the second vote. This is perfect the way it is.

Dwarven Smith gets the third vote however he needs a name change and become legendary in order to keep that p/t.Also the ability should be changed to (tap)sac an artifact then search library for equipment and put it on battlefield.

my votes:

Artifact: Staff of Goblin Devouring. i agree lose the first ability and make it cost 1RRR.

Spell: War Flame of the Goblins. just like it for some reason either change the cmc to 1RR or RRR to reduce power and still seems over powered.

Creature: Drot Bonilth, the Great Meteor Invoker. it's just like Mountain's Fury with a chance of burning yourself instead and would be great for certain decks especialy decks with card:Krark's Thumb (mentioned above) and Goblin Bookie .

My votes,

Creature - Dwarven Smith... Changes - P/T 2/1, Cost of activated ability 2R.

Spell - Blind Aggression... Changes - None, love the card.

Artifact - Blade of Dwarven Fury... Changes - Retain resolve and change wording to, prevent all damage that would be dealt by equipped creature.

although the equipments all do powerful things.. the high casting costs dont feel quite red to me..

For enchantments i do like goblin workshop, but the attached seems a little strong, perhaps tap 2

Vote for Pez, I saw that entry after i posted mine.. and knew it would be a winner, great name, fun abilities, agree with the ability cost modifications tho.

And yes.. my entry was a little OP, but i did balance it (a tiny bit) with the "the owner of that card" clause, it was meant for use with the winning planeswalker.

xeratheenigma says... #16

wow i misread noggle labratory i like it more than when i originally read it. i thought that was meant to work with nekla.

i think noggle labratory should at least be considered for use as an uncommon just look at card:Liliana's Caress though if made into an uncommon it should only deal 2 damage though.

January 18, 2011 6:20 p.m.

Vote staff of goblin devouring. I think it needs changes tho, first change the cmc to RR. Next remove the first ability, next remove the wizard and haste part. Make it legendary. Then have a requirement that it equips to the goblin in play with the lowest power when not attached to a goblin. I can see someone changing a 5/5 beast to goblin and sacing for 10dmg wow.

January 18, 2011 6:33 p.m.

Vote blind aggression. Perfect!

January 18, 2011 8:30 p.m.

" I can see someone changing a 5/5 beast to goblin and sacing for 10dmg wow."

XD That would be amazing!

January 18, 2011 8:34 p.m.

I can't decide on a creature... Umm maybe pez one? Idk. Yea I guess vote for the pez guy. Maybe give the last ability a added doublestrike for the 3 2/2's. And maybe 2RR cmc.

Also I didn't like the blades of the unstoppable, they seemed too much like a normal equipment than a colored one and its second ability felt like an eldrazi lol. Great card tho I would love to have 4.

January 18, 2011 8:40 p.m.

Lol picture this. Staff of goblin devouring in play, use the new brass squire to equip it to darksteel colossus! 22dmg! Rofl win! Cus the staff says sac this creature. So maybe a cmc on the staff of 6 would be better? Or change it to say only can be equipped on a goblin? Altho I love this combo!

January 18, 2011 9:13 p.m.

Lol now I have to find out what is the biggest changeling! Grr stop my brain from comboing. (Slaps own face) lol ow..

I thought that colored artifacts were ruled out during design?

January 18, 2011 11:19 p.m.

No colored artifact creatures were ruled out.

January 18, 2011 11:38 p.m.

My votes

Dwarven smith - could drop it to a 2/2 i suppose i think the ability cost is appropriate however.

Blade of dwarven fury - the equip cost is way to high for what it does... i suggest lowering it to 2.

Noggle laboratory. - 3 damage doesn't seem like a bad thing since red can't naturally revert cards to their hand, and would have to be using another color... traditionally a sworn enemy blue.. although an ally in this set.

I thought I had a pretty clear idea of where we were going with this shard, after the brainstorming sessions...and I really did not think it was going to be a Goblin swarm shard. I thought there were some REALLY COOL card ideas for a Goblin swarm shard, but I just don't think that's what we're making here.

We'll see what happens, I guess. For now, I want to keep my votes in line with the flavor of the theme as I understand it.

And that really narrows it down...

1)Dwarven Smith...this kind of thing def fIts the shard nicely. I agree on change. I say make it a 1/2 with search cost 1R.

2)Noggle Laboratory...no change. You only do the damage when your own creatures get bounced. If you bounce theirs, and they have red, it hurts you. You really have to work with blue to make good use of this card. Those things justify the 3 damage, I think.

3)Blades of the Unstoppable...I like what it does, a lot. It's a Big Bomb Equipment, and we should definitely have one in this shard.

BUT remember the stuff about the Dwarves and the power of the Gemstones(cards with gemstone synergy/subtype)...with the equipments actually being made out of gem materials, not metal. I think that could really work on this card...and should!

My change ideas:

a)Card name: Blades of Karthracite(or any fictitious gemstone). Something like that.

b)Artifact-Gemstone Equipment

That's all. Don't think it's o/p. The double strike can be big, since hitting player twice would mean saccing twice. Still, 6 cost is a lot for equipment, and it's certainly removable. If anything, I might drop it to 3RR. Taking out dbl strike or trample would kill this card.

Please don't forget the GEMSTONE subtype, folks. We could do really cool things with that.

Edit:

*Dwarven Smith P/T...1/3

*Blades of the Unstoppable...

If you think it is overpowered, then here's the adjustment: Just add a small P/T reduction to the creature. Maybe only -1/-0. That way we make use of our Resolve mechanic...and make this card more of a "Sorok" card, so that it's better in Sorok, than it is other shards with red.

January 22, 2011 1:40 a.m.

Ok like the idea vic, adding the -1/-0 to it. Seeing as the type of player I am I like the staff more.

I vote for:

Staff of Goblin Devouring --> Wordy but love the Haste & possible use.

Mountain's Fury --> Simple yet very useful & effective

Drot Bonilth, the Great Meteor Invoker--> Nice haste Wizzard. Fun card, could end up to flip a coin & save you just before you get bet. Do like the name Pez, Goblin Dispenser but perfer the Drot card...
