Alright after voting on the uncommons for Ulgris from previous challenges, we have some new cards to add to our set.

New challenge

So after those cards were added to the set, we have 2 uncommon slots to fill with this challenge. We have a Green/Black multicolor card and a Green/Black/blue multicolor card to design.

The Rules

  1. For this challenge, each member of the community may submit four cards total.
  2. Each card must be either Green/Black multicolor card or a Green/Black/blue multicolor.
  3. Each card must be an uncommon
  4. While the casting cost must fit those specifications, activated abilities are allowed to use any combination of blue, black, and green if you so choose.
  5. Hybrid mana is NOT allowed.
  6. Cards submitted may be creatures, enchantments, enchantments/aura, instants, or sorceries.
  7. All submissions will be graded on:
    • Creativity - As you may or may not realize, different players look for different things in cards. One thing that many players look for is new interactions and situations in gameplay. This allows players who have been playing forever (the design team) to still find the game interesting with each new set.
    • Power level - Power level is often one of the biggest roadblocks to design. now that we are at uncommons, we should want to play the cards that are designed but not think of them as musts. Unlike the rares, many of which the design team wanted playsets of the submitted cards. The uncommon cards must be strong but not too strong. Also consider pricing. you would not want an uncommon to cost $5 because it is so wildly popular.
    • Flavor - I know that some competitive players would still play if the cards had no art or flavor or story and they were just numbers for names, but most players like the whimsical flourish of flavor, so keep that in mind.
    • Usefulness - What is useful? Why is it useful? Will your design be useful in every format (probably not, but maybe)? Will your card create interesting interactions and synergies? Does it have an effect on board complexity? Does it effect tempo? Whatever the answers to these questions are, they are essential to answer for yourself. Without a vision of why a card is being created and what it lends to the game or potentially detract, then it is difficult to balance it.
  8. As with all uncommon challenges. Each design team member will now be presenting the 1 card per color per design team member for voting along with the other top cards presented. In order to make it unbiased, we will continue to stay out of the card voting, so if no one votes for our cards, we can not win. Also our cards will not be evaluated along side everyone else's, they will only be revealed during the voting articles so that we do not compare your cards against those designed by design team members. Basically it will work the same as always, except you will see 3 additional cards to vote on if you wish. So if you do not like our ideas or just don't want design team cards winning challenges, do not vote for them and we won't. If there is an outcry for this idea to stop altogether, it will.

Extra Information

To see all of the cards that have been designed for this shard so far, as well as the story and shard description please see this article.
http://tappedout.net/mtg-articles/2011/sep/5/community-set-ulgris-summary/
Also keep in mind what is missing from the shard. Do we need more creatures? Small or big spells? etc.

Due date:

All card submissions are due by midnight on Wednesday, December 14th, 2011

I know not of what you speak dude1818. I see nothing about lands.

In all seriousness though, he its the longest consistently running column on tappedout. I do make mistakes every few months. Still mistakes and my fault but I should get a little slack. :).

Keep the submissions coming guys. I like the design team having tough decisions to make. More entries make that happen.

Lectrys says... #30

Here are my final two submissions:

Rotting Vines BBGG

Creature - Plant

Defender

Rotting Vines enters the battlefield with a -1/-1 counter on it.

At the beginning of your upkeep, put a 1/1 Saproling creature token onto the battlefield for each -1/-1 counter on Rotting Vines.

0/5

Sort of comparable to card:Honden of Life's Web, an uncommon, but more vulnerable (since it's a creature) and with a lower but more restrictive mana cost. It can potentially produce more tokens, though.

Repulsive Mutation 4GUB

Sorcery

Put target creature on top of its owner's library. Put an X/X green, blue, and black Ooze creature token with wither onto the battlefield, where X is that creature's converted mana cost.

It's along the same lines as AEther Mutation and Death Mutation , which are both uncommons.

December 14, 2011 10:04 p.m.

Lectrys says... #31

Sorry, here's the third card again, this time with the creature token colour:

Rotting Vines BBGG

Creature - Plant

Defender

Rotting Vines enters the battlefield with a -1/-1 counter on it.

At the beginning of your upkeep, put a 1/1 green Saproling creature token onto the battlefield for each -1/-1 counter on Rotting Vines.

Third submission

Thoughtrending

1GU

Enchantment- Aura

Enchant creature

Enchanted creature has "[tap]: Target player puts the top two cards of their library into their graveyard" and "Whenever a creature card is put into a graveyard from anywhere, untap this creature."

December 14, 2011 10:08 p.m.

Sorry, Thoughtrending should be BGU not 1GU and Snaring Ivy should be BG.

December 14, 2011 10:10 p.m.

Fourth submission

Dark Hunger

1BBG

Enchantment- Aura

Enchanted creature gets +2/-2 and attacks each turn if able. When it attacks, it must be blocked by target creature if able.

When Dark Hunger leaves the battlefield, put Dark Hunger on top of its owner's library.

It can be dispelled, but never destroyed.

On Mind Shatter it should read. When this spell enters the battlefield, target opponent reveals his or her hand to you. Choose a nonland card from his or her hand, they discard that card. Then you discard a card. I forgot the first her in the reminder text.

December 14, 2011 11:10 p.m.

Jarrod_0067 says... #37

Goldzone, are you new?

  1. 'Spells' don't enter the battlefield, they are 'cast'
  2. All mechanics for the cards have been set here so you can't create "Mind Shatter" for this
December 15, 2011 8:19 a.m.

Goldzone says... #38

All spells enter the battlefield. No matter if it is an instant or creature the card is still a spell. The wording allows the ability to be used on many different card types. The reason I put new keywords is because a new set needs new keywords to change the play style of the set and for it to be unique. Wither by itself has been used in the past, so what makes the set unique, you build around wither, similar to the Green/Black Hybrids in Eventide. Why not add something new to change things around?

December 16, 2011 6:21 a.m.

shadowdart says... #41

deathtouch, defender, double strike, enchant, equip, first strike, flash, flying, haste, indestructible, intimidate, landwalk, lifelink, protection, reach, regenerate, shroud, trample, vigilance and Memento.

Those are your keywords. Want to make a new one? Come around here next time we build a community set or get a job at WotC.

As for spell entering the battlefield, no. Permanents enter. Spells resolve.

December 16, 2011 7:41 a.m.

IronHead says... #42

Goldzone. We do have new key words in this set. Go check the summary's for Sorok (resolve), Chavest (cleave), Irindu (flow), and Morglen (momento). However you could easily get around that by simply not key wording the ability (ie: remove the key word and write its explanation text out as rules text).

December 16, 2011 4:20 p.m.

Goldzone says... #45

At iron head's comment, I didn't know that you added new keywords for information on the set I click on the link above for extra information about the set. It that link it says that you used evergreen abilities and wither. I thought that none were added so I came up with 2 new ones that went with the graveyard and card advantage theme. As I said before if you don't like them then don't use them, or we could just make them not keywords anymore. At shadowdart's comment I used wording from older cards so that the ability can be used on multiple card types. i.e creatures, instant, etc... I do need to change it so that it activates when the spell resolves.

December 17, 2011 1:22 a.m.

IronHead says... #46

Goldzone I can see how the overall of the community structure could be confusing to a new player and there probably should be a community set summary or something explaining the different wedge colored shards. To Clarify the community set is divided into five shards each one represented a wedge (one main color and its two enemy colors) of the color pie. Ulgris is but one wedge representing green and its enemies blue and black.

December 17, 2011 7:52 a.m.

Goldzone says... #47

I am new to tapped out but not magic. And under the Ulgris extra information and under Ulgris mechanics it only list wither.

Yeah up near the top of the page, click on the link titled "Community Set". That will show you a list of all articles related to the community set including the summaries for each of our shards.

2nd entry

Returning Sickness

BG

Instant

Remove all -1/-1 counters from creatures you control until end of turn. During the next upkeep all creatures you control that have a -1/-1 counter on them gain another -1/-1 counter.

The wording may need to be changed, could be a sorcery but I liked it as an instant and lastly if there is a more fitting name feel free to rename it I just thought it would be a cool idea.

December 17, 2011 4:05 p.m.

Goldzone says... #50

I thought that was just a link to the same page as the extra information one so I didn't click on it. Besides that are the cards vivid if you overlook the keywords or do you want me to redo them so they won't have them.

December 17, 2011 10:35 p.m.

squire1 says... #51

You do not have to redo them. They have been added to the design team database for voting.

December 17, 2011 10:37 p.m.
