Ulgris' Green Rares

Here are the three winners of the Ulgris' Green rare Challange

Ulgris Green Rare Winners

Fetid Evolution - xeratheenigma

Pulse of Maggots - IronHead

Spreading Ooze - ilikeoldcardsbetter

The Ulgris Blue and Black Rare Challenge

Here are the guidelines for our newest challenge:

1) We are creating three cards again this round: 1. a blue Rare, 2. A black rare, and 3. a Blue/black multicolored rare.

2) Each submitted card should be rare.

3) The only keywords that may appear on submitted cards are Wither (Ulgris' keyword) and evergreen keywords. For your convenience, the evergreen keywords are deathtouch, defender, double strike, enchant, equip, first strike, flash, flying, haste, indestructible, intimidate, landwalk, lifelink, protection, reach, regenerate, shroud, trample, and vigilance. Remember, just because you're allowed to use a keyword, doesn't mean it really belongs on Ulgris. For example, lifelink doesn't really fit Ulgris flavor-wise.

4) Each person may submit a maximum of four entries total. You may submit any combination of creature, sorcery, enchantment, or instant for your four entries. You may also submit any combination of the two colors for this challenge (could be 4 blue cards, could be all multicolored UB, or could be a mix).

5) We will be judging based on the following criteria: a) Effectiveness (Does the card actually work mechanics-wise?) b) Set Cohesion (Does the card belong in its color and does it belong on Ulgris?) c) Balance (Is the card too overpowered or underpowered both in general and for its rarity?) d) Creativity (Does the card seem fun or is it a clever design?)

To help inspire you, here's a summary of Ulgris:

Ulgris is a simple place. Imagine a peat bog with a dense canopy cover that makes everything perpetually dark. The waters in this region are a network of underground rivers, and the standing water in the bogs and estuaries go from salt to brackish to fresh water. The easy way to describe this place is dangerous. Everything is deadly, poisonous, and the ground is covered in writhing bugs. This area has no real society. Most species found here can mate and procreate shortly after they are born and eat nearly anything. Survival is key. There are few, if any, sentient beings found here.

The main creature types of Ulgris are Bat, Fish, Frog, Fungus, Insect, Leech, Lizard, Ooze, Plant, Rat, Snake, Spider, and Worm.

The themes of Ulgris are:

1) Dangerous Creatures (Particularly those with deathtouch, flash, and wither)

2) Defenses (Particularly countering target activated and triggered abilities, regeneration, and shroud)

3) Graveyard Manipulation (Particularly milling and reanimation)

4) Token Creation

5) -1/-1 Counter Effects/Manipulation

The deadline for entries is Wednesday, November 10, 2010 at 11:59 p.m. Good luck to everyone!

This article is a follow-up to Voting for Ulgris' Green Rares. The next article in this series is Voting for Ulgris U/B Rares

leon_raymond says... #2

just wondering, will there be a green/black and green/blue rares competition?

@IronHead i love allergic reaction! and omen fish is fairly epic too but i think it could have flash. it would be a nice surprise for your opponent

@leon_raymond I'm assuming its just like the last shard (Irindu) so the next design challenge will be GU, GB, and GBU.

i would assume so.

so far it has followed irindu's challenge setup exactly (excluding the planeswalker challenge) and if I'm correct it should be the next challenge that is posted after we vote for these rares

Abrupt Mortification

Cost: XB

Instant

Put X -1/-1 counters on target creature

Waning Landscape

Enchantment - Aura

Cost: 3BB

Enchant Land

At the beginning of enchanted land's controller's upkeep, put a -1/-1 counter on each creature that player control

needs to be re-worded, but the whole point is that your opponent will begin to accrue -1/-1 counters before they can destroy the enchantment at sorcery speed. And that it's the land being enchanted, not the player, in case of Leyline of Sanctity , etc.

Volatile Ooze

Cost: BU

Creature - Ooze

Whenever an opponent plays a spell, put a token into play that's a copy of Volatile Ooze

P/T: 1/1

I'm not sure whether or not this is too powerful. I was thinking of either changing the cost to 1BU or giving it 0 power if it was too powerful

Will of the Masses

Cost: U

Sorcery

Target player puts the top X cards of his or her library into his or her graveyard where X is twice the number of creatures you control

Meliadoul, the Harbinger

Legendary Creature - Leech

3UB

Wither, Deathtouch

During your attack phase, choose a color. Target opponent exiles the top X cards of his or her library, where X is the number of creatures with wither attacking. For each card of the chosen color exiled this way, put a 1/1 black and blue leech creature token with wither into play under your control.

4/5

(Inspired by Oona, Queen of the Fae , which I think is conceptually perfect for U/B Ulgris. If we find that this isn't powerful enough, I was going to add the following abilities: XU: Target opponent places the top X cards of his or her library into their graveyard and/or XUBB: Exile X cards from target opponent's graveyard. Place that many 1/1 black and blue leech creature tokens with wither into play under your control.)

@exarkun: there already is a card named Putrefy just thought id let you know

Battlecry1986 says... #23

@exarkun809

i like idea behind Putrefy/Touch of the Decrepit

But, it doesn't feel like a rare.. more like a common at BBB.

If it cost 1B i could see it as a rare or uncommon level.

Take a look at Do or Die , card:Garza's Assassin, Royal Assassin or Wicked Pact these are all rare destroy type black cards.

Your card currently feels more like a crappy Doom Blade , Terror or Expunge

Also here are a few examples of Commons that are more powerful than you card as it is currently printed. Hideous End , Dark Banishing

is Rain Season better than Doubling Season ?

Rain season doubles everything where as Doubling season only doubles your stuff.

@Battlecry1986: You do realize that rebound and multikicker aren't evergreen right and the only non evergreen mechanic allowed in Ulgris is wither right?

my first entry is: mind-corrosion

honestly i do think rain season is better than doubling season. especially with wither doubling season made all of your creatures recieve double the -1/-1 counters where as with rain reason all creatures would recieve double the -1/-1 counters. and it should at least cost more than doubling season because counter/token production is usually greens thing and it affects all players.

im not saying i wouldnt mind playing it i would love to play it and so would graft decks as well.

note: it possibly could lose shroud or i could raise the cmc by 1 or 2 what do you guys think.

November 9, 2010 2:19 a.m.

leon_raymond says... #39

@xeratheenigma I think that Stifling Lamprey is very powerful, but not over-powered. It can still be Pyroclasm ed and Wrath of God ed even if it keeps shroud. And by the looks of things, Ulgris will have several abilities which say "put a -1/-1 counter on all creatures target player controls" or something similar. So i think keep it as is, or make it 1/1 so it can be "swept" more easily.

November 9, 2010 2:34 a.m.

Jarrod_0067 says... #40

I made Iguanid, Burrowing Thrinax + Giant Annelid specifically to combo with enter-the-battlefield and put-into-graveyard creatures. e.g. my fourth and final entry

@Battlecry1986

Touch of the Decrepit/Rot allow you to "putrefy" any nonblack permanent... not creature. This makes in much, much more valuable. I actually thought it was closer to overpowered than underpowered when I wrote it up. You can destroy any nonblack card on the board for BBB with a 1/2 turn delay. I would use that.

@ilikeoldcardsbetter i really like the sound of virile crayfish. very epic.

@ElementalMaster23 Swamp Spider seems very over powered to me. Also, having wither and deathtouch is a little unnecessary. As much as i'm in favour of a black beatdown spider, i think it should have deathtouch removed, and should cost 2BB. and then it could maybe become an uncommon instead. I see ulgris' rares as being big on the effects side. A black beatdown spider, as epic as it is, is an uncommon in my view

@Battlecry1986 I agree with Jarrod_0067, it should be re-worded slightly. I still love the card though.

@Leafs_suck i love both of these cards. Widow of Vengeance is EPIC! and Endemic Antidote will work really well with Ulgris. Also, if the Antidote doesn't make it into the rares, i reckon it would make a great uncommon if it was changed to a sorcery. (of course it would lose "at the beginning of your upkeep")

Deco_y says... #62

@leon_raymond Thanks. I made Widow of Vengeance legendary as well just to give her a really epic feeling, and also because people would have a chance to run Clone s or something for a spot removal of it, so people might have some way of removing it easier late game. The idea I had for Antidote is if Ulgris has almost no sentient life naturally, then it would probably take a group of people(or same race) to traverse it safer and that they would almost canabalize eachother to make sure the weak don't hinder the strong's survival and to also power them up before eventually killing them too.

November 10, 2010 9:51 a.m.

leon_raymond says... #63

@ilikeoldcardsbetter okay sure. That seems like it could work. Make it enter the battlefield with X charge counters on it to make it easier to remember what X was.

3rd Entry:

Moldy Frog

BB (2 CMC)

Creature - Frog

BB - Sacrifice Moldy Frog: Target Player receives a poison counter. Target player then gives one of his or her creatures a -1/-1 counter if possible.

1/1

Flavour text: Only in Ulgris can a frog's ribbit instill as much fear as a mage's scream.

@Leafs_suck i like idea of Moldy Frog, just we aren't using poison in Ulgris. just evergreen key words and wither. However, you could say, "BB - sacrifice Moldy Frog: Put 2 -1/-1 counters, divided as you choose, on any number of target creatures."

or

"BB - Sacrifice Moldy Frog: put 2 -1/-1 counters, divided as you choose, on one or two creatures target player controls"

This way, it gets around shroud and seems a little bit more like a rare.

Ohhhh I didn't know about the no poison, my bad.

I would have it:

"BB- Sacrifice Moldy Frog: Place a -1/-1 counter on target creature. If the player who controls target creature has other creatures with -1/-1 counters, add another -1/-1 counter to each of those creatures."
