Ulgris' U/B Rares

Here are the three winners of the Ulgris' U/B rare Challange

Thanks to everyone who gave their creativity and time to the effort! If your entry didn't get picked, take heart, we are keeping all your entries in mind, and you might see them come up in some form later when we all fill out the set.

Ulgris U/B Rare Winners

Cranial Gorger - xeratheenigma

We agreed that Worms in Ulgris would be a bit bigger, and the lose life for effect fit really well with Leeches.

Void Ooze (was Mindsludge Ooze) - Carn13

The Team decided on the name change for various flavor reasons, mainly because Mindsludge brought to mind discard effects.

Aether Asp (was Mystic Snake) - DeckBuilder345

The Ulgris BG / UG / BUG Challenge

Here are the guidelines for our newest challenge:

  1. We are creating three cards again this round: 1. a Black/Green Multicolored Rare, 2. A Blue/Green Multicolored Rare, and 3. a Blue/Black/Green Multicolored rare.

  2. Each submitted card should be rare.

  3. The only keywords that may appear on submitted cards are Wither (Ulgris' keyword) and evergreen keywords. For your convenience, the evergreen keywords are deathtouch, defender, double strike, enchant, equip, first strike, flash, flying, haste, indestructible, intimidate, landwalk, lifelink, protection, reach, regenerate, shroud, trample, and vigilance. Remember, just because you're allowed to use a keyword, doesn't mean it really belongs on Ulgris. For example, lifelink doesn't really fit Ulgris flavor-wise.

  4. Each person may submit a maximum of four entries total. You may submit any combination of creature, sorcery, enchantment, or instant for your four entries. You may also submit any combination of the two colors for this challenge (could be 4 blue cards, could be all multicolored UB, or could be a mix).

  5. We will be judging based on the following criteria: a) Effectiveness (Does the card actually work mechanics-wise?) b) Set Cohesion (Does the card belong in its color and does it belong on Ulgris?) c) Balance (Is the card too overpowered or underpowered both in general and for its rarity?) d) Creativity (Does the card seem fun or is it a clever design?)

To help inspire you, here's a summary of Ulgris:

Ulgris is a simple place. Imagine a peat bog with a dense canopy cover that makes everything perpetually dark. The waters in this region are a network of underground rivers, and the standing water in the bogs and estuaries go from salt to brackish to fresh water. The easy way to describe this place is dangerous. Everything is deadly, poisonous, and the ground is covered in writhing bugs. This area has no real society. Most species found here can mate and procreate shortly after they are born and eat nearly anything. Survival is key. There are few, if any, sentient beings found here.

The main creature types of Ulgris are Bat, Fish, Frog, Fungus, Insect, Leech, Lizard, Ooze, Plant, Rat, Snake, Spider, and Worm.

The themes of Ulgris are:

1) Dangerous Creatures (Particularly those with deathtouch, flash, and wither)

2) Defenses (Particularly countering target activated and triggered abilities, regeneration, and shroud)

3) Graveyard Manipulation (Particularly milling and reanimation)

4) Token Creation

5) -1/-1 Counter Effects/Manipulation

The deadline for entries is Friday, November 26th, 2010 at 11:59 p.m. Good luck to everyone!

@IronHead Shouldn't Rot Liege's abilities be "Other COLOR creatures you control have..."? Otherwise it seems to help itself out too much. Or make it a 0/0 or 0/1.

@Jarrod_0067 hmmm, so you think it would fit if it could also kill artifacts? sort of like an unstoppable Putrefy ? Sure

Nullshroud

Cost: BG4

Instant

Nullshroud may target permanents as though they didn't have shroud. Destroy target creature or artifact, it can't be regenerated.

November 24, 2010 1:51 a.m.

Jarrod_0067 says... #27

@leon_raymond well, this is Ulgris, and one thing I have noticed is that ANYTHING goes on Ulgris. Creatures here can do ANYTHING because they have adapted to a harsh environment.

Nullshroud is cool, but I would change the name to Obliterating Exposure or something like the sort. It sounds more like a rare :)

Now, lets run through this:

Fits B and G in feel? Check

Fits the set? Check

Has potential? Check

Original? Check

Cost? Check. Here's the reasoning:

  • Multicolor, harder to cast, -1 for each additional color
  • Destroys artifacts, +2
  • Destroys creatures, +2
  • Bypasses shroud, +2
  • Can't be regenerated, +1
Total: 6 cmc

Terminate + Naturalize = This card

If this was a real card, I would use 4 maindeck

8/10 from me

November 24, 2010 3:23 a.m.

leon_raymond says... #28

@Jarrod_0067 oh, thankyou very much. I was just a little unsure. Okay, i'll change the name to Obliterating Exposure

Obliterating Exposure

Cost: BG4

Instant

Obliterating Exposure may target permanents as though they didn't have shroud. Destroy target creature or artifact, it can't be regenerated.

November 24, 2010 3:27 a.m.

Jarrod_0067 says... #29

@leon_raymond no problem. I try to help in whatever way I can. Making sets is so much fun, and although my ideas usually aren't selected, I get enjoyment out of it. By the way, your originality never ceases to amaze me! I'm still puzzled at why Wizards haven't employed you for their creative board yet

November 24, 2010 4:07 a.m.

leon_raymond says... #30

@Jarrod_0067 haha i can safely say the same thing for you. Still, we get a kick out of it. It's not like we need to get paid for what we enjoy (although it would be nice). With the inventive card mechanics you've created, i'm surprised Wizards haven't employed you for their design team

November 24, 2010 5:04 a.m.

Jarrod_0067 says... #31

So guys. Who thinks a re-take of an old creature Tatterkite ? Maybe like this:

Indelible Slickfast 1UG

Legendary Creature - Snake

Creatures you control can't have -1/-1 counters placed on them.

Creatures your opponent's control can't have -1/-1 counters removed from them.

@NecroBane i really like Blightsling. I love the idea of a legendary plant creature. I think that it may be a little over-powered, but not too much. Since it's legendary, it should be fine though

2UBG

Ulgris' Gravecycle

Enchantment

All creatures have wither.

Whenever a non-token creature is put into a graveyard from the battlefield, you may draw X cards or put X 1/1 green Fungus creature tokens onto the battlefield, where X is the number of -1/-1 counters on that creature.

Send Off

GU

Enchantment

I'm not too thrilled with the name. Open to suggestions. -Vic

Crossing boundaries

GBU

Sorcery

Look at the top six cards of target opponent's library. You may choose one permanent card among them, and put it onto the battlefield under your control. Opponent puts the rest of the cards into his/her graveyard.

(I was considering putting the other 5 cards back on top of opponent's library in any order I choose. That way, even if I don't get something useful to steel, I can still do something effective. Probably need to increase cost for this. Also more than willing to see a name change for this card). -Vic

November 26, 2010 2:05 a.m.

vic says... #43

Leap of Filth

GBU

Instant

Play Leap of Filth only during an opponent's turn. All creatures that you control gain Flying and Deathtouch until end of turn.

"My canopy will not be a playground"- yet-to-be-named plainswalker for Ulgris.

November 26, 2010 2:12 a.m.

vic says... #44

Just went and checked out the other entries. What do you think about Obliterating Exposure taking out more choices than just a creature or artifact? Desert Twister comes to mind, that's why. That is easier to cast, but doesn't get around shroud and isn't an instant. Dare we say even a planeswalker is vulnerable?

November 26, 2010 2:34 a.m.

Jarrod_0067 says... #45

@vic&leon_raymond maybe that would work. Obliterating Exposure is a nice concept. If we were going all out with making it a rare, we want to go with a bang. Make it exile! Gone! Forever, never to return!!! Stupid shrouded and indestructible Platinum Angel is no longer unbeatable (thank god!!!)! :)

Mana cost is already high so an additional cost, maybe pay life?

Here is my opinion on it, take it or leave it.

Obliterating Exposure Cost: 3BG Instant

As an additional cost to cast Obliterating Exposure, pay 5 life. Obliterating Exposure may target permanents as though they didn't have shroud. Exile target permanent.

That way, the curve is better, you won't be risking it late game (which is why the reduced mana cost), it gets past indestructible and is just too awesome to pass up. At least 2 mainboarded in every Ulgris deck.

November 26, 2010 3:19 a.m.

Jarrod_0067 says... #46

Jungletread Parasite 3GUB

Creature - Worm

When Jungletread Parasite enters the battlefield, switch control of it with target creature an opponent controls.

At the beginning of your upkeep, you lose 3 life.

1/1

November 26, 2010 3:35 a.m.

leon_raymond says... #47

@Jarrod_0067 & vic well, i'm very happy with the new design for Obliterating Exposure, provided people don't see it as being too overpowered. My biggest worry was that getting around shroud was going to be considered way overpowered, but apparently not :)

@vic all your cards seem epic. and i really like the idea of crossing boundaries. Can't complain with that card at all.

@BrownDog5117 i agree with NecroBane that Latchvein spore is really cool. It's such an original idea for a removal card

November 26, 2010 7:37 a.m.

NecroBane says... #48

November 27, 2010 1:27 a.m.

vic says... #49

@leon_raymond Thanks a lot. For Crossing Boundaries, do you like it better with the other 5 cards in graveyard(which sort of fits with milling), or think the other five cards should get stacked?

November 27, 2010 3:18 a.m.

leon_raymond says... #50

@vic i'm not sure. they both sound like good ideas to me. Maybe you can decide after you've looked at them?

November 27, 2010 6:48 a.m.

vic says... #51

Well I fortunately we have the luxury of a design team. They can pick whichever way they think is best.

Jarrod_0067-I think Obliterating Exposure is looking just right now. Wanted to take a day to mull that over. Yeah. Wouldn't change anything.

November 28, 2010 4:46 a.m.

Jarrod_0067 says... #52

@vic sure. Just thought that I could help stir things up a bit. Get the creative juices flowing. But yeah, I like leon_raymond's idea either way
