Community Voting for Ulgris' Blue/Black Rares

These are your choices, brought to you by the Head Team.

Black

Allergic Reaction - IronHead

We replaced the -X/-X effect with sacrifice, to fix the wording to magic-speak, and there was a suggestion to increase the cost.

Cranial Gorger - xeratheenigma

Team liked this one as is.

Malaria - Jarrod_0067

It was suggested that Malaria was either under-costed or should be a sorcery.

Mindsludge Ooze - Carn13

Team liked this one as is.

Blue

Multiplicity - exarkun809

Ok, this one will have changes in the final version, suggested change is replacing the card draw with token generation. Let us know what you think if you vote for this one.

Stifling Lamprey - xeratheenigma

Team thoughts were this needed a cost increase.

Black/Blue Multicolored

Mystic Snake - DeckBuilder345

The Team liked this card, but thought that the abilities should include tapping the creature as well as the mana cost. Oh, and it needs to be renamed, since Mystic Snake is already taken.

Landsweep Plague - BrownDog5117

Team liked this one as is.

Pool of Despair - dude1818

There was a question of whether this card should be mono-black or not, but for the most part loved it.

Stealthspore - BrownDog5117

We changed "When Stealthspore enters the battlefield, choose a basic land type. Stealthspore is unblockable if your opponent controls a land of the chosen type." to just be unblockable. There were some concerns that this needed a P/T change to 1/3.

Volitile Ooze - leon_raymond

Ok, we loved this card, but it requires a change before we put it in the set. First, you can't really get rid of it unless you use a sweeper, which we were almost ok with but as it is now, you get exponential growth (i.e. 1,2,4,8,16) for free, which will get out of hand fairly quickly. It needs to have some sort of cost applied to the copying. If you give this one a vote, make sure you address this.

Voting

Here's what we're looking for:

  1. Each person should cast three votes, one for Black, one for Blue, and one for Multicolored Black/Blue.
  2. Each person should critique the card for which they have voted. Agree or disagree with the Head Team's suggestions and include any other ideas you have to improve the card. Any critiques made on cards for which you did not vote will NOT be put into consideration from the Head Team.

The deadline for voting is Wed, November 17th at 11:59 p.m.

This article is a follow-up to Ulgris' Green Rare Challenge Winners The next article in this series is Ulgris U/B Rare Winners

Blue

I really like multiplicity however what I don't like is the triple U manna cost. This is is supposed to be a multicolored set so something like that needs to be changed. I would change it to either 2U or if you want to increase the cost in response to making the colors easier 3U or 2UU.

Also I'm fine with the draw (though the token generation isn't a bad idea) but to keep it from being too abusable I'd add a "then discard a card" clause at the end of it.

Blue/Black

I'm going to vote for mystic snake which we can easily rename to something like "Bog Snake" or "Bog Viper".

For the first ability I agree adding "tap" to the cost is necessary. For the second ability I would add "tap" to the cost and either make it simply read "put a -1/-1 counter on target creature" OR increase the manna cost a bit and make it read "put a -1/-1 counter on each creature with a -1/-1 counter on it".

Black

I really like my own but I feel like voting for my own card makes me kind of a douche so I'll hold off on voting for this part.

Black - cranial gorger - I like it the way it is

Blue - mindsludge ooze - Good the way it is, what about adding a "tap" to the cost of the ability?

Blue/Black - volatile ooze - it could bring 1/1 ooze tokens into play instead of the copy, that way you don't get exponential growth, but that might make it underpowered..

Black --> Cranial Gorger

Just a cool card. It tutors, at your expense, and can kill creatures with its deathtouch. Very cool and it seems balanced too.

Blue --> Mindsludge Ooze

Almost a built-in Stifle . Comes in as a 1/1, so its somewhat easy to remove. I'd consider possibly making him a 4/4 with 2x -1/-1 counters. So I'd up his power/toughness by one. That means if you do activate his ability twice, he'd be a 4/4 for 4. Pretty solid.

Blue/Black --> Landsweep Plague

The Ulgris form of Evacuation , for 1 less. Considering the cards developing in the set, getting -1/-1 counters on creatures is not difficult. This could be a killer card to clear the board, without being too unbalanced!

aw... i want to cast 3 votes but i want to vote for multiple multi colored ones.....why you gotta make this so hard?

November 15, 2010 12:01 p.m.

xeratheenigma says... #5

my votes are :

blue/black: Landsweep Plague I like this card a lot it is a semi-global to global Evacuation i say leave it as is.

blue: Multiplicity the cost of UUU seems like it might be quite difficult to cast in a three color deck. I would suggest changing the mana cost to 2,UU or 1,UU. as for the card draw issue I think the card draw should stay just give it a "draw a card, then discard a card" clause to it.

black: Cranial Gorger I think it is good as is.

DeckBuilder345 says... #6

ok, multi colored, i like the mystic snake, as for a rename... hmmm... Orphic Snake? Snake of Mystery? Mystic Rattler?

For mono black can i vote Pool of Despair by changing the casting cost from 2(u)(b) to 2(b)(b)?

for mono blue i think Stifling Lamprey looks good. If the cost must be increased then i suggest it move to another colorless mana, not another colored one.

Black: Allergic Reaction seems underpowered (Damnation )). The Gorger does too (I would suggest it cost B or 1B max). I vote for Malaria, cost 2B and reads 'Discard a card as an additional cost. Each player sacrifices each creature with a -1/-1 counter on it'

Blue: Obvi I would vote for mine. I like the idea of making it 1UU or 2U, but then it would be way too abusable.

I would say either add, 'then discard a card' or 'skip your next draw step' or 'return a basic land you control to your hand.'

Multi: Volatile Ooze with the addition, 'At the beginning of your upkeep, if you control 6 of more creatures named Volatile Ooze lose 5 life.'

dude1818 says... #8

Black: I think changing Pool of Despair to 2BB makes sense.

Blue: Stifling Lamprey seems pretty good, but I thunk that its price should be increased to 3UU or 4UU.

Multi: I'm going to vote for Volatile Ooze. I agree with ilikeoldcardsbetter on the 1/1 ooze tokens.

Carn13 says... #9

Blue: Mine-Mindsludge Ooze. I love the idea, and ability. Brings a new spin on -1/-1 counters to a card, or maybe an old one, I don't know.

Black: Cranial Gorger.

Multi: Mystic Snake. Name change required. This works SO WELL with my Mindsludge Ooze, maybe build a deck around it.

hey, so first one. Exar-Kun VOTE FOR YOUR OWN. OBAMA VOTED FOR HIMSELF IT IS OKAY!!!!!

second, cause in hte comments this wasnt addressed as much as i think it should for MULTIPLICITY

i mean...problems i have with this card=

1) to much blue in casting cost.

2) this card exists in green for 1 mana(Glimpse of Nature )...and so you would think that, blue, since its normally better at drawing cards would be the same deal.

3) this isnt really the crazy card advantage shard...its advantage is with tokens. if it read put a token into play for each crature that came into play this turn i would like it.

November 15, 2010 5:39 p.m.

xeratheenigma says... #11

@xander: i do agree that there is too much blue in the mana cost.

as for it costing less than glimpse of nature im not sure that a blue reprint of glimpse is neccesary also i dont recall too many blue cards that you draw cards for playing creatures Distant Melody comes to mind so to make it closer to glimpse of nature you could make it cost 1,U

I could also see this as a potent token producing card if we changed it from card draw to token production.

heres how i would have it if we went with token production:

Multiplicity 1,U

sorcery

whenever a nontoken creature enters the battlefield this turn put a 1/1 creature token onto the battlefield.

Black: Malaria. I reckon it's an awesome card. To me, it feels like a black Browbeat . And everybody loves Browbeat . I think that it is not ridiculously over-powered. But if others think so, then it should cost 2B and remain an instant

Blue: Stifling Lamprey. I personally don't think it needs to cost any more, because it hasn't got any protection of any kind. Your opponent can just Disfigure it. If others think that it is over-powered, then i say make it a 2/1 so that a single -1/-1 counter will kill it.

Black/Blue: I'm going to be a douche and vote for my own card, Volatile Ooze. IronHead, I advise you do the same. The main focus was the exponential growth, a bit like Mirror-Sigil Sergeant (a very under-played card in my opinion). But i do realise now that it would basically become invincible. So here are my suggestions to you all:

  1. As ilikeoldcardsbetter had said, and dude1818 has agreed on, just make it produce 1/1 tokens.
  2. As exarkun809 said, make you loose life when you have too many.
  3. The suggestion i hope you all agree on: Whenever a non-token creature enters the battlefield, put a token which is a copy of Volatile Ooze into play. This way, it keeps the exponential factor and can still be killed easily. If anybody has another idea on how to keep the exponential growth without being too powerful, please tell me. Also if anybody feels like this card should be Green/Blue instead. To be honest, i was originally intending for this to be Green/Blue. What do you guys think?

Black: Malaria-it may need to be a sorcery and cost one more or not. but its really cool yah i agree its like black version of browbeat.

Blue: Mindsluge ooze, That card is so cool. i would make it have to tap. to do it but thats about it. plus it really vits well in a set based on -1/-1 counters. i want to proliferate that SO BAD. haha

Blue/Black-Mystic snake. make the blue ability a tap ability, and the black should be, "put a -1/-1 counter on target creature"

IronHead says... #14

Right so since its been deemed acceptable to vote for your own card (Allergic Reaction). For black I vote allergic reaction.

Since its been compared to Damnation which isn't surprising since I kind of it intended to be ulgris's version of that card I do agree that it can be toned down to 2BB. However its ability to kill indestructible creatures and to potentially be one sided I don't think it should go lower than that.

Jarrod_0067 says... #16

@...pretty much everybody really... Malaria has the cost I gave it for a reason. At most, I think it is a counterable Doom Blade . How many -1/-1 counters can you put on creatures and blow them up all in one turn? Sure, Contagion Engine comes to mind, but indestructible creatures don't die, it won't affect 1/1 creatures because they would have already died from the negging, and it's a double-edge sword that can just as easily kill your own creatures too.

I like giving my opponent a choice. Usually they will choose the lesser of 2 evils, which I think makes it a fair and fun card. Also, you can counter it yourself by discarding your own creatures just to bring them back or even utilize graveyard mechanics in some way. I want it to feel like a rare. And hey, if they can make Lightning Bolt a common, why not?

If anything, make it a sorcery. It won't affect how it will be used that much and I think it's a fair compromise.

November 17, 2010 5:09 a.m.

leon_raymond says... #17

@Jarrod_0067 well said, but i still think that it's fine as it is. It doesn't need toning down

November 17, 2010 5:12 a.m.

Volatile Ooze doesn't need a cost, it just needs the tokens to be a U/B Ooze Token that comes into play when ever an opponent plays either a Instant or Sorcery spell, it can't be for both. You could even have a companion card that makes the same tokens for the other type of spell being played. And possibly making it cost 2UB instead of UB.

If the token was a copy of Volatile Ooze it would be ridiculously broken.

These changes would make this a card I would consider(if it was real) running in my sideboard for certain match ups.

That would be my vote.

November 22, 2010 6:56 a.m.

leon_raymond says... #19

hmmm, okay then. How about Volatile Ooze just makes a 1/1 Black and Blue Ooze creature token whenever an opponent plays a non-creature spell? Still powerful but not too over powered.
