Deck Tex'n'Mex

Khaotica, 10 years ago

Creatures

Deathbellow Raider - Currently with only two 2 drop Minotaus (the other being the mediocre Felhide Brawler, Deathbellow is going to be necessary in the deck and he's not too bad. You always want to be attacking anyway, but his regeneration ability is very solid.

Kragma Butcher - Let me tell you that the Inspired mechanic works awesomely for aggro decks, especially with a pump to get out of it.

Mogis, God of Slaughter - Awesome four drop, amazing ability and puts the clock even shorter on the opponent.

Oracle of Bones - This Tribute is one of the best in the set. Either 5 damage with haste when he drops, or you get a Hero's Downfall or Lightning Strike for free. Both options are going to hurt your opponent.

Rageblood Shaman - Tribal's heart. Boost and trample make every hoof harder.

Ragemonger - Keeps creatures going out with cost reduction. Very useful. The second one you cast is only 1 mana :D

Non-Creatures

Hero's Downfall - Kill that pesky blocker or Planeswalker in the way of your victory.

Lightning Strike - Helps kill annoying creatures or BAM LIGHTNING IN THE FACE.

Deviant Glee - One of the best aggro enchantments in black, the pump is great and trample for R is a nice bonus. Keeps minotaurs stomping.

Madcap Skills - Very useful for killing opponents or making them 2-for-1 themselves, which no one wants against aggro.

Sideboard

Minotaur Skullcleaver - Replace Kragma Butcher against control decks, where he usually doesn't live long enough to attack and untap. Is also great against any slower deck.

Mizzium Mortars - Useful against mirror-aggro matchups.

Skullcrack - Take out Hero's Downfall for this little baby against control decks. Stops Sphinx's Revelation and is also nice against the odd Fog.

Thoughtseize - More anti-control, this deck can handle most other matchups. Goodbye starting hand keeper.

Order of Succession

Lonely Sandbar

So, I completely forgot I had these cards from the Commander 2013 precons. Order of Succession gives me another option for non-targeted theft, which is great considering the prevalence of hexproof, shroud, and protection on key creatures. Lonely Sandbar should provide me more late-game draw and coming in tapped never harms this deck much as long as it can reach 3 mana and/or steal a Sol Ring.

5th Place Finish at FNM

KnightsBattlecry001, 10 years ago

Finished 5th last night at FNM. Only lost one round out of five. Pretty impressed with how I done.

Round One 1-2 vs Gruul Aggro

Game one I won fairly fast. Got an unleashed Rakdos Cackler turn one followed by a Spike Jester turn two swinging for 5. My opponent didn't get anything until turn three with it being a Elvish Mystic. It was killed my next turn with a Lightning Strike. I threw a Madcap Skills on my jester and swung for eight. My opponent got a Boon Satyr. My go I got another Madcap Skills out and swung for eleven and won.

Game two I got outran and couldn't get any kill spells to kill his creatures. Getting beat down by two Stormbreath Dragons and an Arbor Colossus is not fun. The match didn't last long.

Game three was very close. I'd kill his stuff swing for some damage. Usually four or five damage with Spike Jester and a non unleashed Cackler or Cackler and Tormented Hero My opponent eventually ramped up to get two Stormbreath Dragons out and hit me for eight two turns in a row. The turn before I died I got Desecration Demon out while blowing up one of his dragons with a Dreadbore. I was hoping he didn't play another creature to where he could tap down my demon, and sure enough he got a mystic out and swung for game.

Round Two 2-0 vs Mono White Aggro Heroic

This was a close one both games. Thank God for kill spells, because without them I would have gotten beaten horribly. Game one was back and forth. My opponent gotten out two Fabled Hero with a Eidolon of Countless Battles on each of them. He managed to hit me with one of them for eight. Blew up one of them with a Dreadbore and killing the Eidolon of Countless Battles with a Lightning Strike. I got Desecration Demon out and held my opponent for two turns after that with chump blockers, because he got two Ethereal Armors on the hero. I eventually got a Dreadbore and killed the hero. Swung with the demon a Rakdos Cackler and a Mogis Marauder winning the game. Game two played out just like game one.

Round Three 2-0 vs Rakdos Aggro

The guy I played I played the week before and was excited to have a rematch with him. Game one was back and forth. We played a lot of the same stuff. Cacklers, Shred Freaks, that sort of stuff. I eventually hit a few kill spells blowing up his creatures. I eventually managed to get out Rakdos, Lord of Riots and Desecration Demon the following turn. I won two turns later.

Game two I won fairly fast. I managed to out run him with my cheap creatures and removal hit everything he threw out.

Round Four 2-0 vs Boros Aggro

Game one I got very quick. Blew up my opponents stuff and swung out every turn. Game two was a little bit closer. I almost got beaten thanks to my opponent getting two Skyknight Legionnaires and a Aurelia, the Warleader out. I managed to get a Doom Blade killing Aurelia and a Magma Jet to kill a Legionnaire. His go he hit me for two and didn't play anything else. My go I played a Spike Jester hitting him for three then played Rakdos, Lord of Riots. My opponent didn't get anything. My go I hit the legionnaire with a Lightning Strike and swung for nine. My opponent played a Boros Elite and passed. My go I got a Mogis Marauder and swung for game.

Round Five 2-0 vs Azorius Aggro

Game one I won rather quickly. Kept blowing up all his stuff and swinging away with my guys. Game two I had to mulligan two times before I got a decent hand. My opponent got a Brimaz, King of Oreskos out and a Fabled Hero before I got anything two fight back with. His go he got a Battlewise Hoplite out and threw a Ordeal of Heliod on it and a Ethereal Armor on the Fabled Hero. My turn I got a Dreadbore killing the hero. Then played a Agent of the Fates. His go he didn't get anything. My go I got a Lightning Strike hitting the hoplite. Swung with the agent for three. His go he got nothing. My turn I got Desecration Demon swung for another three with the agent. His go he still didn't get anything again. My go I swung for nine and played Rakdos, Lord of Riots. His go he got Elspeth, Sun's Champion and blew up both demons. My go I got a Madcap Skills and threw it on the agent. Swung for six. His go he didn't play anything but rolled Elspeth up to get three tokens. My go I hit two of the tokens with a Magma Jet and Lightning Strike. Swung for game after that.

I'm proud with how the deck performed overall. Going 4-1 felt great. It was a complete 180 from what I done the week before when I went 2-3. Didn't pull anything out of my prize packs, but went and bought one pack just for laughs and pulled a Mogis, God of Slaughter. I had a great night and pulling that made it even better. As always any suggestions on how to make this deck better is welcome and appreciated.

First Time Playing This Deck: Success!

TheRadicalDuck, 10 years ago

After playing this deck at FNM last night at the local magic shop, I'd have to say this deck was a great success. The first game ended when I used Mark of Mutiny on a blightsteel colossus, poisoned one adversary to death with the 11 trample poison counters, and continued to use Brion's ability to fling it at the second opponent, finishing him off as well. Needless to say, this deck worked much better in standard 1v1 play, however against multiple opponents (I only played with up to 4 people at a time including myself) this deck still managed to hold it's ground nicely, using the burn spells to deal with their early attempts at using planeswalkers and other nasty creatures early game.

adding white splash

sang11, 10 years ago

Ive been testing more, and decided to add the white splash, beacuse of the Master of Waves that have protection from red and to take down gods and big creatures easier, so Chained to the Rocks work perfectly, Boros Charm is the best card i can add, really, just, is perfect, 4 damage combo with Satyr Firedancer and can survive things like supreme veredict.

Also added Revoke Existence tu get ride of Detention Sphere and other things, also gods.

Im testing the Stormbreath Dragon, it require 5 manas, and generally i cant pay for it when i draw it, so ill test it more, maybe Chandra, Pyromaster was better, or maybe neither of them. If i take them out im planing to take complete the playset of Chandra's Phoenix and Young Pyromancer

Went undefeated in the first two match ups. First Match was a red/black rush, went 2/0. Second match was a boiler deck and went 2/0 also. Third match I lost 0/2 because I had 2 mana for 8 turns against a Red/Green deck.

Ramp = required

Jka4567, 10 years ago

Due to suggestions and high cmc as well as slow playtests I have added 2 Sylvan Caryatid into both the main and the sb. Debating whether to add Elvish Mystic for more ramp.

More Testing!

azhri1, 10 years ago

Pain Seer is out it just wasn't good.

Profit / Loss is in and another two copies replace Glare of Hersey in the side deck. Another copy of Renounce the Guilds bumps it up to three in the side to deal with a glut of new multicolored Planeswalkers and Gods.

A note on Profit / Loss this card just wrecks RDW and MUD, plus in any sort of WWx mirror and makes not having an answer to a turn 2 Pack Rat much less troublesome.

I also tested Fortify but found that the ability to kill MotW and get favorable trades with MUD was just too much to pass up.

Currently testing Devour Flesh in the side deck, but if I use it I would prefer the main deck. Blood Baron is just impossible to race game one and being down a game against a deck that can play him is just bad juju.

tweaking

afizzle, 10 years ago

Decided to take out Jace, memory adept in favor of another opportunity. I was only using Jace for his +1, except against control, but he usually eats a hero's downfall before giving any serious card advantage or mill pressure in my experience. Opportunity fits this deck better bc it is an instant and, if it resolves, gives immediate card advantage. I also removed one spellheart because it was showing up too often and too early with 3.
