Top 4 SCG Game Night!

mrbloo1848, 9 years ago

Hey guys!

Sorry for the late report, I've been super busy with personal matters and haven't had time to write up reports on time. This report is on the SCG Game Night that recently became a thing (at least to my knowledge) where stores can host tournaments outside of Fridays and SCG helps out with prize support (more specifically tokens and pins).

This report will be brief as I lost the life totals and match info that I usually have to write reports with.

I played 2 Temur Midrange decks, both running similar usual sets of cards like Savage Knuckleblade, Crater's Claws, Stormbreath Dragon, and the dorks-Courser suite. Won both matches, one thanks to early aggression, the other thanks to mid-late game control. Stubborn Denial is an annoying card, FYI.

I also played against Sultai control, and got to ultimate both Sorin in the first game but lost to Garruk, Apex Predator's ultimate because I started drawing dead. Ultimated Sarkhan in game 2 and swept game 3.

I don't remember my 4th round (if there even was one), and I made it to top 8 (again, not hard considering we barely made double digits that day I think.) Once in top 8, my first round opponent had to go due to work so I fortunately got the first round win. The other guy decided he wanted to play out the finals so I had to. He was playing Abzan with a twist with mainboard Arbor Colossus which promptly wrecked my face. I then drew dead in game 2 and lost 0-2. Oh well.

Thanks for reading!

This blog post contains a brief re-cap of the games and what I learned: [2-1 at FNM](http://blackdeckwins.tumblr.com/post/102075655166/2-1-at-fnm) I've got some changes I want to make, and will post them soon.

Fixed some late game problems

syncronym, 9 years ago

because i foreseen having a problem with big creatures and planes walkers i decided to throw In Garruk's Wake to clear out my opponents side of the field... only running one copy right now because i have so much draw in the deck i usually only have time to play 1 before the match is over

Clear Comments

First outing, 2-2

TheOtherDemko, 9 years ago

Got a 4th Rhino, 2 Wingmate Rocs, 2 Fleecemane Lions and a bunch of scrylands, as a result of a buylist I put together of some of my old Commander cards. I went 2-2 last night in my first ever Standard tournament, and decided that the deck was a little scattered in its current form, so I focused the deck a bit more, increased several cards to 4-ofs, and eliminated the things that weren't working for me last night. Wall of Limbs is a good card, but really only great against control matchups, late-game, so I moved those to the sideboard. Still a work in progress. Further suggestions would be wonderful.

2-1-1 at FNM, first time out

Loco-Motive, 9 years ago

So my first time playing this deck out at my FNM. 14 players, I came in 4th place at 2 wins, a loss and a tie. Below are the results and my afterthoughts, and any input from you would be appreciated!

I learned two things tonight: One, that my deck does well against Abzan. Two, that my deck has trouble against Temur. I know this because my opponents were 2 Ab decks and 2 Tem decks, lol. Not much for variety tonight.

Villainous Wealth is the real deal. I say this because of one reason: three of my four games saw my life at 1 or 2 and my opponent at 20 or 30+, and I won those games.

Abzan Opponent 1: I won 2-0. Basic Abzan staples - Fleecemanes, Rhinos, Wingmates, Sorins and Elspeths. Both games came down to my dropping Villainous Wealth for X=7 and x=12...so many good Abzan permanents and Downfalls for his permanents already cast. It was beautiful. He had 22 life and I was at just 1...but I "Wealth'd" one of his Rhinos and 2 Wingmate Rocs which gained me life back to win the match. Also, played In Garruk's Wake in this match and it was golden.

Abzan Opponent 2: I won 2-1. This match was identical to the one above. Except in this match, I was able to cast two copies of Villainous Wealth in two consecutive turns. It was ugly, lol. In the last game of the match, he had massive board presence with an Elspeth, Sun's Champion EMBLEM on board, 6 of her tokens, 2 Fleecemane Lions, a rhino and a Wingmate Roc and its token and i was at 6 life. He decided to swing completely out at me and that's when I cast Aetherspouts and wiped everything he had. I Wealth'd him on my turn to get all of those creatures and then won the game.

Temur Opponent 1: I lost 0-2. This was an ugly match. My opponent was able to put out a turn 2 Savage Knuckleblade and a second one on turn 3. He had the perfect opening hand and that match ended in about 5-6 turns. The second game went a lot better but his start was still a little too fast for me to keep up in any meaningful way.I can be resilient to aggro, but Temur aggro presents some tougher scenarios with 4/4 or 6/6 Knuckleblades coming at me so quickly.

Temur Opponent 2: 1-1 draw. This match was a little better than the last Temur match. I lost the first game, again, quickly. The second game, however, was amazing. Once again, I was down to 3 life and was really afraid he has some burn. He was playing Lightning Strike and Crater's Claws in his deck. I lucked out, however, and Wealth'd him for some amazing creatures like Arbor Colossus and Savage Knuckleblade. I was also able to get my Garruk, Apex Predator out, making multiple deathtouchers as well as a Kiora, the Crashing Wave, who was making krakens f'days! It was a good match, and by the time game 3 needed to start, the timer went to turns and we had a 5-turn clock on the opening play, lol. Hence - draw.

WHAT I NOTICED: I didn't board in Sagu Mauler at all. I never had a control opponent...but even if I did, I wonder if I would bring him in? I also didn't use any Drown in Sorrow from the sideboard but I think that's because I only faced two types of decks and they weren't weenie aggro. However...I'm wondering if Sagu could be replaced for some additional removal, sweepers, etc. One thought I had was potentially Whelming Wave. I like Aetherspouts and will continue to use that in the main, but it's 5 CMC can sometimes come in a little late. I'm toying with the idea of replacing my 2 Maulers in the sideboard with 2 Whelming Wave just to stave off attacks.

FNM 11/7/14

Went to FNM again and went 3-0, leaving me with an all time sanctioned record with this deck of 8-1. The first two rounds weren't really eventful and worth describing as they were quick 2-0s, but round three was pretty fun.

Opponent: Mardu Aggro

Game 1: He was on the play, as I always lose high roll. Game was pretty back and fourth fighting for board position and dealing damage. I was down to 13 due to my land base and he was also down to 13 due to his lands and my damage. Playing Raise the Alarm three times in front of my guys made me really slow down. The game took a swing in his favor when he laid down an end of turn Raise the Alarm and followed it up with Sorin, Solemn Visitor. The lifelink proved to be too much to work through as I could not draw into enough cantrips. Game ended and the score was now 0-1.

Game 2: I was on the play this time due to the loss. I had an amazing hand. The play by play is actually really simple, as it didn't take too long. My turn 1 I played a land and Monastery Swiftspear, getting in for 1. He followed with a tapped land. My turn 2 I played a land, followed up with a Akroan Crusader with Hammerhand, swinging in for 5 damage. His turn 2 he played another tapped land and a Bloodsoaked Champion. My turn 3 is where it all went wrong. I dropped down a land, followed by Dragon Mantle, Defiant Strike, and Titan's Strength, swinging in for 14. 1 + 5 + 14 = 20 and he was dead. 1-1.

Game 3: This game I don't remember too well because it was a struggle, but the highlights are still clear. He played a Circle of Flame on both turn 2 and turn 3. I managed to get 20 in through Monastery Swiftspear being a total badass and a well timed Gods Willing to get in with a big Foundry Street Denizen. It ended with a top deck Hammerhand off of a cantrip from Defiant Strike. End score of 2-1.

I was really happy with the way the deck performed tonight. The added white racing stripe made all the difference, and I definitely would have lost to 2xCircle of Flame with mono-red. I was thinking of splashing blue to add in Jeskai Ascendancy, but I've now decided that it isn't worth. I plan on going to my first big tournament in December for the SCG IQ, and will update my progress until then and afterwards.

I decided that Propaganda and Ghostly Prison weren't working for me, so when I traded for a Martial Coup I took the opportunity to swap those two cards out, and since I was allready taking out two of the attack deterrent effects out, I swapped Norn's Annex for Sensei's Divining Top, because top is amazing.

I wrote "kitten ambush" on the tightsleeve in sharpie over White Sun's Zenith in homage to We Didn't Playtest This At All.

Goodness that Maybeboard

KnyghtZero, 9 years ago

I have added several, and I do mean several, cards to the maybeboard. I will start playtesting them, but any comments that could remove a few from the equation before I have to run them would be nice. Oh also the deck itself changed a bit. The sideboard too.

Update, FNM results!

gro0ve, 9 years ago

Game 1: Abzan Midrange/Walkers.

0-2: Ok, this was rough, I'll be honest, Abzan is a hard matchup, I brought in the 3 Thoughtseize which never showed up until the end of game 2 and pretty much sealed the deal for him with numerous dead draws. Garruk and his deathtouch beasts locked down the board after I had burned through removal trying to clear planeswalker/smaller threats. Ok still learning, next round!

Game 2: Mono-Green Bees.

2-0: Bileblight pretty much sums this match-up...up. Removing his three mystics game one before he had a chance to ramp into anything and then removing those threats via the same in game 2 just ruins this build. Fun but felt kinda bad. ok next round!

Game 3: Abzan Aggro

0-2: Both games were very tight but really the aggro this deck can pump out is just outside the grasp of the majority of the removal available to me. his deck consisted of Death Dealers, Fleecemane lions and rhinos plus some Sorin action and I got pretty mana flooded. I brought in drown in sorrows hoping for some stacking removal but it just had no chance. Live and learn.

Game 4: Abzan Midrange

1-1: The first game lasted 30 mins and ended with Garruk again cleaning house after I made a terrible misplay and basically forfeited the match. Game 2 I brough in Liliana and was able to get 2 sagu mauler morphs and a rhino into the graveyard before using her ultimate to win in 2 turns.

Overall I feel like the deck performed well. I'll probably move both Dissolve and Thoughtseize to the mainboard and side-out 2x Bileblight and 1x Hero's Downfall as well as the 3x Negate.

Time for more play-testing!

2 - 2

The deck faired rather well tonight. I Will be looking to add more mana dump for late game. I will also be editing the sideboard.

Matchups.

Game 1: B/W aggro (2-1) This was a great matchup. I lost only once due to a misplay. I swung out early with a prowessed Seeker of the Way only to have it chump blocked by a Ruthless Ripper. If I had kept the seeker on the board for a couple more turns the outcome would have been 2-0.

Game 2: G/R Devotion (1-2) I lost the first game to a huge ramp advantage over me and game 1 Stormbreath Dragon. That is a typical game one against that build. My sideboard choices were End Hostilities, and Phyrexian Revoker. They came into play second match giving me a win. The third match Was wonky. I ended up drawing into 4x Seeker of the Way and 3x Brimaz, King of Oreskos.... I had resolved a Spectra Ward and was sitting pretty 30 life to 3 life..... then my opponents sideboard plan against my Banishing Light came into use against my ward, a card they didn't even know I had in deck!!! Agghhh. With their Reclamation Sage targeting my spectra they followed up with an Anger of the Gods and board wiped my field leaving me vulnerable to a Stormbreath Dragon and a Polukranos, World Eater. They were both monstrous! It only took two turns of me topdecking 2 plains to end the round.... :( talk about an amazing comeback for him!!!$

Game 3: RDW Budget Aggro(0-2) The losses here were due to really bad hand that I had no business keeping! Playing this matchup, be expecting a match 1 loss. This deck, ecspecially the budget fast aggro build, can overwhelm quickly! After the two matches we decided to play 3 more games before the next round started. I went 3-0 those 3 matches. Very easy to beat this build, because you flood the board with threats that they often find impossible to beat.

Game 4: RDW Budget Aggro (2-1) This was another matchup like the previous. This player had the same plan, triggering Akron crusader heroic and flooding the board with 1/1 and then using combat tricks to evade my blockers and dealing significant amount of damage. Against a wall like Lagonna-Band Trailblazer or Brimaz, King of Oreskos their plans fall short. This buys you enough time until you can resolve a Elspeth, Sun's Champion or Wingmate Roc. The only difference was that this player had a mid game anthem tactic through Hall of Triumph

All in all, I think this deck could have done better if I wasn't so overconfident going into it and I put more thought into my opening hands. I will be returning with this deck for next week's FNM. The only real issue I may need to plan around is against enchantment or artifact removal...

Lanceslayer77, 9 years ago

whelp we are changing this up a little because I'm tired of standard at the moment and have more fun stuff to play in modern so we're going to up the budget a little and maybe move into legacy for some extra power and shenanigans.

Domri_RAID, 9 years ago

I updated the list. After playtesting, I found Pharika's Cure to be very, very powerful, so I went from 2 to 4. I also found that resolute archangel was quite weak, as I have so much life gain that the archangel's ability is irrelevant. Overall, This deck is actually very, very good vs Abzan Midrange, and doesn't have to bad of a matchup vs Jeskai either. Boss Sligh(RDW) is a tough matchup game 1, but after sideboard(I actually don't have a sideboard list in here, as the meta is different for everyone, but as long as you have 3 or 4 drown in sorrow's in your side, this applies to you) it gets much, much better.

Tried playing with a Steam Augury in place of a Dig Through Time, because I was tired of seeing them in multiples in the early game (2 Dig opening hand is basically a mull to 5...). I liked it a lot, so the change will be permanent.

After a LOT of testing and playing in the Online Dailies, I have tweaked the list.

Seeker of the Way is great in your opening hand on the play, but later in the game he is typically just a blank. Because of this, he is now a 1-of.

Disdainful Stroke is fantastic against midrange and walker decks, and the mana cost is certainly less greedy. The issue I had, however, was that against any faster deck (and there are a LOT of them on MTGO right now), I had two blanks built in the deck. Nullify , while greedier color wise, is never a blank. True, it can't hit walkers, but, in a deck full of flyers, that doesn't concern me a whole lot. I ended up maindecking 2x Nullify and going down to 1x Disdainful Stroke. The second Disdainful Stroke is sided in during the midrange and walker decks.

Suspension Field x2 has proven to be a great way pre-board to deal with critters that are difficult to burn off: Polukranos, World Eater, Arbor Colossus, Genesis Hydra, Ashcloud Phoenix, Savage Knuckleblade, and Siege Rhino, as well as guys like Courser of Kruphix, Wingmate Roc, and Brimaz, King of Oreskos. It also hits gods once they become creatures. Against midrange decks that have a lot of these threats, I typically side in the other two. Use caution with it, however, because a deck with Banishing Light or enchant removal can hurt you if they target a Suspension Field that has a creature with an ETB trigger on it (looking at you, Siege Rhino and Wingmate Roc).

Prognostic Sphinx is amazing to side in and play the late game. Dissolve x2 is also brought in for this purpose.

The 1-of Erase is there because Jeskai Ascendancy is a card, unfortunately.

The land base has been altered (Temple of Epiphany added) to help with the added burden we have to get blue sources out quickly.

Went 3/1/0
2/1/0 - Mono Green devotion: tough matchup, he was scared of the palm
1/2/0- Mono Green splash Black: almost took him in game 3, had enchantment board wipe combo that wrecked me mid/late game
2/0/0- Abzan junk, dem combat trix tho =)
2/1/0- Abzan junk/control, pretty cool deck, equal matchup

lessons learned, rabble was the star of the show in most games. I used fabled hero as bait for him and kept rabble alive which I should have done the alternate because of the heroic triggers, probably need to do a 4 of with the hero, either way they both shine here very well depending on what else is in your hand each has a favorite matchup of tricks. Rabble with ride down and hero with protections.
Prowess is good for widdleing away the early game damage, seaker and swiftspear are definitely a cool pairup. Prowess off a titan's strength or feat of resistance is just sick

I saw my self holding ride downs more than I wanted to, at some point they HAVE to block and they always got used to remove something, didn't feel it was ever a dead card, just a waiting opportunity, better than a straight burn removal I think. Only not useful agianst hexproof, and nothing is going to help you there except a buff and there are a fair share of those in there.

deflecting palm won games, threw a 12/12 hydra back at someone's face for the win on an alpha swing.

overall extremely fun deck, it performed extremely well in my very control heavy meta.

Metagame update

theinfernumflame, 9 years ago

My metagame is loaded with Abzan decks and decks that try to play the long game, so I updated the deck to deal with that. Read the Bones and Ajani, Mentor of Heroes keep me from getting stuck in topdeck mode (as often happens against the mirror). Windstorm wipes out troublesome fliers at instant speed (Wingmate Roc, as well as Hornet Queen, Stormbreath Dragon, and Prognostic Sphinx).

IQuarent, 9 years ago

Replaced the Battlefield Forges with Wind-Scarred Crags because I decided to sell the forges now that they are 8+ dollars each. I bought them for $1.89 a piece back in January, so good for me I suppose. I'm not sure what other "comes into play untapped" red/white lands would be better as a cheap replacement, so it's in with the crags for now.
