Updates

Enral, 7 years ago

Been awhile since I've updated:

  • Firewild Borderpost: Converting the bounce land downside to an upside
  • Khalni Gem: Converting the bounce land downside to an upside
  • Ghirapur Orrery: I have found myself hellbent early to mid game once I have exploration effects to dump out my hand (I also run a low count of instants and sorceries which makes it easier to dump all my permanents on the board to hellbent). This card gives me additional exploration effect and refills my hand for more gas. Albeit having a grouphug effect, but just like Storm Cauldron, it helps me a ton more than other players. Combos with Manabond too.

Minor Revamp

Alright, so after further review, I made a couple of adjustments to the deck. I figured that I was making too many clues without anything to do with them, so I tried to balance my assets out. Take a look;

I took out Drownyard Explorers for Syndicate Trafficker. Trafficker easily sacs Clues for less mana than regular (to activate the "Clue Sac Effects") and becomes a mighty fine front-liner.

I replaced Ongoing Investigation with Contraband Kingpin. I already have enough Clue generators, and Mr. Fisk just gives me some extra control over my deck for making them. Win-win.

I decided to go -1 Briarbridge Patrol for +1 Decimator of the Provinces. Decimator fuels Marionette Master and is a MASSIVE hitter, something that I thought to try out.

To try to focus my deck, I took out the milling. I found it too far out there and way off topic. If Sphinx's Tutelage were still in standard, I might reconsider, but alas, I ended up taking out Fleeting Memories for more of a token stance: I went +1 Ulvenwald Mysteries, +2 Voldaren Pariah  Flip, and +1 Westvale Abbey  Flip. That way I can produce tokens and then have something to do with them besides chump block.

Press for Answers was also taken out in exchange for Summary Dismissal. I didn't see a reason to run blue and not run at least one counter for contingency sake. Probably will end up adding more to the sideboard whenever it gets constructed.

The mana base also got tweaked a bit; I went -1 Forest and -1 Island for 2 Hissing Quagmires to deal with enemy creatures, and went down -2 Botanical Sanctums for +2 Lumbering Falls' late game security. Good stuff.

Better? Worse? Let me know!

Out: Phyrexian Arena, Dark Petition, Trading Post, Smuggler's Copter

Pyrexian Arena and Trading Post are just dead in hand too often. The primary function of Trading Post is to return critical artifacts to hand and I just don't have that many artifacts I want to return. I have cheaper sac outlets anyway. Turn 2/3 Phyrexian Arena just doesn't make a large enough impact on the board and in a 20-life format losing 1 life on upkeep can be dangerous. 17 instants and sorceries doesn't seem to result in spell mastery often enough for Dark Petition and Smuggler's Copter not being a creature in the graveyard makes it less than optimal too often. Of these cards, Smuggler's Copter and Trading Post are the most likely to see a comeback.

In: Blood Artist, Splinterfright, Dismember, Panharmonicon

Blood Artist slowly (or maybe not so slowly) wins the game if your opponent's board is locked down. Splinterfright puts cards in your graveyard and is a win-condition in the late-game. Dismember is very close to unconditional removal (will remove most duel commanders, at least in my meta) for one generic and 4 life, and can catch your opponent off-guard.

Panharmonicon requires testing but doubles ETB triggers on at least 12 creatures in my deck, and many of them are the most critical creatures in the deck. The full list currently: satyr wayfiner, Merciless Executioner, fleshbag maurader, Wood Elves, Eternal Witness, Gonti, Lord of Luxury, Acidic Slime, Shriekmaw, Sidisi, Undead Vizier, Massacre Wurm, Woodfall Primus, Terastodon. Let me know if I have missed any interactions here, but I think this has a lot of potential. I have yet to see if the card will be worth the 4 mana though.

Played with a few friends last night, made a couple quick edits beforehand. Haven't had time to make serious changes yet, but drawing that Spirit Mantle last night really helped out.

THANK YOU!

OUT:

IN:

I took out the lands as our curve ends at 5, and with the amount of mana rocks that are ran, it shouldn't be too difficult to get the mana that is needed. Grand Architect/Pili-Pala are cut as they are too slow to produce inifinte mana, and are easy to remove. Took out PtE/Utter End as the former has a drawback of ramping our opponents and the latter is too high costed for removal. Artificer's Intution only fetches out a select few artifacts, so it isn’t the best option to run. Saheeli Rai doesn’t necessarily fit in here as we don’t run many things to copy. Clock is cut to make room for other things, and isn’t necessary to effectively run Winter Orb.

Added in Pact/Denial for more low-cost counters. Imperial Seal/Intution/Tezzeret as more tutors. Toxic Deluge as another sweeper to help control the board. Gilded Lotus as another mana rock to produce through a Winter Orb. Future Sight to help dig through our deck, and also combos with SDT and Etherium Sculptor. Ad Nauseam is another effective draw spell, and with having a small curve, should be able to get enough cards in hand to be able to combo off.

Okay so I really have to give user:xepherian a huge amount of credit for creating their amazing STD deck of gearhulks and deck cycling (which can be found here: deck:my-madcapped-experiment) that, when playtested against, creamed my puny allies deck. It really opened my eyes as to what Im missing and the slow pace this deck is setting. I've added 1 more Reckless Bushwhacker, Kitesail Scout (which is not an ally :-P ) got replaced with Expedition Envoy.

Matchup - 0:2

Game 1: It didn't matter that user:xepherian's deck took 11 damage from a madcap on turn 4. I didnt have any threats to take out the metalwork.

Game 2: not one, not two, but THREE Noxious Gearhulks were my downfall, either being madcapped or hard casted.

Early Christmas Change

Got a Vorinclex, Voice of Hunger, Sakashima the Impostor and a Riptide Laboratory for xmas from my gf. Been waiting a long time to add/acquire these!

Vorinclex, Voice of Hunger in over Stormsurge Kraken since SK has been a dead draw and I always wish it hid the board with a bigger thud. Big Green Meanie finally gets his spot.

Sakashima the Impostor gets around legend rule and is heavily abusable in this copy/flicker strategy deck. Was my first rare to ever own in magic, feels so good to have another copy. Begrudgingly dropped a Master Biomancer that might make its way back in at a later date, since its a personal favorite. It has been a dead draw far too often recently, cannot ignore it when I have a Sakashima that will damned near always be a welcome topdeck.

Riptide Laboratory I have just enough wizards to make this heavily abusable. Glen Elendra Archmage, Prime Speaker Zegana, and Venser, Shaper Savant to name a few lol. Swapped it with an Island
