Welcome to Shape Anew Combo!

You might enjoy this deck if:

  1. You played or were interested in playing Splinter Twin before the ban
  2. You love Combo
  3. You enjoy the feel of flipping cards
  4. You like cheating out big broken creatures

You might not enjoy this deck if:

  1. You prefer less linear strategies
  2. You hate Combo
  3. Your meta is control-heavy
  4. You don't like Phyrexia or artifacts

With that out of the way, let's get into the deck!

Cast Shape Anew , targeting a artifact token created by (ideally) Thopter Engineer or Pia Nalaar or an animated Blinkmoth Nexus . The sorcery then digs through your entire deck until it hits your Blightsteel Colossus . Swing with the Colossus until it hits the lethal 10 poison counters.
Thopter Engineer is our best turn 3 play. I've found that opponents often forget that she grants ALL artifact creatures haste. The newly summoned Blightsteel swinging immediately can very easily catch the enemy off guard, even resulting in an instant kill if they didn't leave up any blockers.

Pia Nalaar acts as copies 5-6 of Engineer, and while she doesn't provide haste, she still provides decent utility and an artifact to sac.

Blinkmoth Nexus is much harder to kill since it is only a creature when we want it to be one. If our thopters get nuked, we can wait until turn 5, pay to make blinkmoth an artifact creature, then sac it to Shape Anew.

We run a large amount of filtering to find our pieces. While we can't use Gitaxian Probe any more, we still have access to Faithless Looting , Serum Visions , Izzet Charm , Opt , and Jace, Vryn's Prodigy  . This what we should be doing on turns 1-2. The discard effects can also get Blightsteel back into our deck in the event that we draw into it, as the Colossus shuffles itself back if it hits the yard.
While Blightsteel Colossus laughs in the face of removal such as Abrupt Decay , Lightning Bolt , and Fatal Push , it is NOT invincible. Path to Exile is our biggest problem, as we don't even get a chance to bring it back.

To counter this and other non-destruction based removal such as Vapor Snag , we run 4 Remand and 3 Izzet Charm . In more controlling match-ups, we have 3 Dispel in the sideboard.

You will get Thoughtseize 'd. It will suck.

Real talk, the sideboard is super dependent on your meta. Due to how our deck works, we actually can't effectively run traditional sideboard artifacts like Pithing Needle or Spellskite , so we have a bit more of a challenge.

By Force : Color-flexible mass artifact destruction.

Ceremonious Rejection : Fights everything from Eldrazi to Karn.

Counterflux To negate storm triggers, most likely should be replaced with Mindbreak Trap .

Dispel : To fight Burn (a poor match-up) and to counter high removal decks.

Echoing Truth : Sweeps away tokens and other troublesome permanents.

Roast : Kills bigger creatures like Thought-Knot Seer and Gurmag Angler .

Spell Snare : Versatile card vs things like Snapcaster Mage , Tarmogoyf , Tidehollow Sculler , and Searing Blaze .

Sweltering Suns : Punishes decks that go wide, and can even cycle in case it's not needed. Feel free to swap for Anger of the Gods if you face GY decks frequently

Additional options include Twisted Image to kill pesky Spellskite s and Crumble to Dust if you face a ton of Tron.

See what your meta brings in, and counter it.

I have seen versions of this deck as , with creatures like Thraben Inspector and Blade Splicer , as well as cards like Leyline of Sanctity and Path to Exile . While I can see why it works, adding essentially triples the price of the land base. Playsets of Arid Mesa , Flooded Strand , Scalding Tarn , or Celestial Colonnade are NOT cheap. Perhaps later, but for now I'll stick with .

As well, keep in mind that this is a rather frail combo deck, if you're afraid of Blighsteel getting removed you can wait a turn before you cast Shape Anew to hold up a Remand or Dispel .

If all else fails, you have evasive fliers and ways to pump them up. Go get 'em champ!
