Introduction

Once Urza was spoiled, it didn't take long for people to realize just how broken of a commander he is. So many groups went to work brewing him.

What Can Urza Do?

Urza has three abilities, all of which are amazing. The first ability can give you a mana rock to use when he is on the battlefield. Also, that construct inside an artifact based deck can become quite a formidable beater.

The second ability is great because it allows all of our artifacts become Sky Diamonds (in essence). It also gets around Null Rod and Stony Silence abilities because Urza is activating the ability. It also allows us to break parity with stax pieces like Trinisphere , Winter Orb , and Static Orb .

The third ability is what we are basing much of our strategy around, which is to sink infinite mana into this, dig out our deck, and then win through wincons. The important part of his third ability is what it says:

"Shuffle your library, then exile the top card. Until end of turn, you may play that card without paying its mana cost."

This means that you can exile everything from your deck and have your whole deck in exile. You do not need to cast it in the order you exiled it. You can play them however you want in any order you want.

The Gameplan

The main gameplan is to get infinite mana and then use it with Urza's last ability to dig out a combo from exile. There are a number of infinite combos that get you infinite mana. There are also a few backup wincons as well.

Infinite Mana / Combos

  1. Isochron Scepter + Dramatic Reversal + + of non-land mana sources (i.e. Rocks)
  2. Grim Monolith / Basalt Monolith + Power Artifact
  3. Basalt Monolith + Rings of Brighthearth
  4. Paradox Engine + Voltaic Key + Sensei's Divining Top : Draw your deck.

Wincons

With infinite mana available, you can do a number of things. Usually this means using Urza's ability to exile your whole deck. Then from there you can setup your wincons.

  1. Laboratory Maniac / Jace, Wielder of Mysteries + Brainstorm (or other draw spell): Win.
  2. Iso-Rev combo + Codex Shredder : Mill everyone's libraries
  3. Paradox Engine + Blue Sun's Zenith + Voltaic Key + Sensei's Divining Top : With Engine out, cast blue sun's from exile (it will be for ). It will shuffle into your now empty library. Activate Top's ability to draw a card, hold priority, use voltaic key to untap top. You will now draw zenith, and draw top again. Now, with infinite mana, you can cast zenith targeting each opponent and repeat the process until everyone draws and loses.
