Welcome one and all to another weird tribal deck! This time I'm looking at Shades, which outpace fire-breathing effects like no other, Shivan Dragon eat your heart out (I'm joking I love you)! What's the goal of our deck? To produce insane amounts of mana and make our shades hard or impossible to block. Turns out swinging for 28 in one turn is a power move. Who knew?
I have a thing for weird tribes that are unrecognized. While many people think it's a problem (you can only play against a trilobite tribal deck so many times without losing your mind) I seriously enjoy the constructive building and work it takes to make a deck like this. Over the past few months, I've been tinkering and improving the overall feel and effectiveness of the deck and I think I've reached a point where I'm very happy with how it turned out. It cranks out consistent wins with startling efficiency for such an underrepresented tribe. Needless to say, I'm always Throwing Shade.
It goes without saying that shades aren't the best. I mean, they're incredibly fragile. Imagine playing Dungeon Shade on turn 4 with no untapped mana. You just payed four mana for a 1/1 flier with no upside on that turn. In commander, that's probably one of the worst moves you can pull. However, that's not how you play this deck. As far as I can tell, there are two ways to play this deck: freaky fast kill 'em all DEATH DEATH DEATH and set up for a good turn and kill everyone over time or in one calculated swing. Of course there is possibly a third option which we'll talk about later.
Alright, let's address the elephant in the room: why the hell is K'rrik, Son of Yawgmoth the commander of this innocent little deck? Well...originally I ran Ihsan's Shade as the commander when I made the deck in May, and he was fine, the deck usually didn't win until turn 25 or something and it almost never won in our more competitive games. The, K'rikk, Son of Yawgmoth reared his head and it was love at first sight, I literally couldn't stop him from making out with my deck (if we're being honest, it was really gross). So yeah, they're inseparable because he is amazing. I have lost an incredibly small number of games with him in the command zone and he speeds up the deck 15-20 turns. Did you know he facilitates a turn 2 kill? Yeah, he's kind of insane. Not to mention he gets huge and has lifelink. Trust me, K'rrik damage stacks up quick, especially when you buff him with Shade's Form or any of our equipment. Case in point, the deck is better because it is truly playable (much like my specter deck) without being that classic: "Mono-Black is so toxic and broken."
