Update 2021 The only card holding us back from being modern legal Unearth has been reprinted so I am brushing off the dust and updating the adjustments that I have made over the last few years. The previous deck lists felt like they were trying to do too much, so I have forgone the hand disruption entirely in favor of more creatures.

There is still a bit of removal that synergizes well with this function of this deck in the forms of Fatal Push and Tragic Slip.

The creatures that I have added are Diregraf Ghoul to help smooth out the curve, Butcher Ghoul due to the recursion, and the one that I am really excited for is Bloodthrone Vampire. This card coupled with Rite of Consumption gives us a combo similar to the Atog + Fling combo which is very effective in pauper.

Update 2018

Its been a while since I have done anything with this deck, but I wanted to thank all of you for the help! All of the cards that I added came from your suggestions! I really like the way that the deck feels now, and I think you will too.

If you like the deck, be sure to drop an Upvote!

My Goal

I think that we can all agree that Zombies in general are a sort of cult phenomenon. With seemingly endless movies, TV shows, and comics all dedicated to the zombie genre its almost a wonder that we haven't all been burned out on them. However, they are just to friggen cool. For me, I grew up on movies like Dawn of the Dead, The Army of Darkness, games like Resident evil, and to this day I still watch The Walking Dead, and Ash Vs the Evil Dead. Thats why I wanted to build a tribal Zombie deck that is competitive, and consistent enough to enjoy playing, and budget friendly enough for you to build and keep for when ever the mood strikes you.

With some of the budget constraints that I put on this deck it seems to have shifted to be more aggro, with the combos/ synergies popping up later to help close out the game. To me it almost feels more consistent despite being considerably cheaper than it was before.

As always, play test and tell me what you think, all suggestions are welcome!

How It Works

When I initially began working on this deck I intended to make a Modern Zombie build. However I was just never satisfied with the results. It seemed like I either ended up having to sacrifice too much speed and consistency to keep the combos/ interactions that in my opinion really highlight what the zombie tribe should be about, or sacrifice those combinations almost entirely to get some more consistency. To me, the latter always seemed like nothing more than a slower goblin deck and never felt good enough to take to FNM.

That's what brought me to my current list. I've tried to strike a nice medium between the two in a casual format. The creature base its self still isn't the fastest so Ive thrown in some typical black disruption, and removal in order to first facilitate building an aggressive board state with creatures like Gravecrawler, Bloodghast, and Geralf's Messenger. An early Carrion Feeder can turn into a good beater fairly quick, act as a good sac outlet for your Blood Artist and Geralf's Messenger, and eventually get paired up with Rite of Consumption to close out the game or in some cases just gain you life.

Carrion Feeder+Gravecrawler: carrion feeder will be your main beater here and gravecrawlers are his favorite meal. with these two out you're able to give your feeder +1/+1 for each mana you have available, each turn.

Carrion Feeder+Geralf's Messenger+Unearth: this is a pretty fun combo that will boost your carrion feeder up to 4/4 and messenger to 4/3, and hit your opponent for 8 health in the process with out even having to attack. If you dont have unearth you still finish that combo with at least a 2/2 feeder and a 4/3 messenger while your opponent looses 4 life just for watching.

Carrion Feeder+Bloodghast: this isnt one of your most effective combos but when youre in a tight spot you can still pump up your feeder a bit granted you have a land in your hand you can play.

Blasting Station+Grave Crawler: this serves two purposes, but mainly I find myself using this for creature control. so long as I have another zombie in play I can just keep pinging you until all of your creatures are gone, then aim for the head.

Blasting Station+Geralf's Messenger+Unearth: with this combo you have the joy of blasting your opponent to the face for 11 damage and ending up with a 4/3 messenger. Without unearth you still have 5 damage to the face and a 4/3.

Blasting Station+Bloodghast not as effective as the other combos, but in a tight spot its still good for 1 damage to the target of your choice and your bloodghast will come back as long as you have a land to play.

Rite of Consumption: This serves as an alternate win con, and with all of the reoccurring creatures it can really help turn the tide against faster aggro decks just by serving as main board life gain.

Blood Artist: This card in here is just awesome. With all of the creature sacrificing combos in this deck he is a given. You mean I can gain a life and deal one damage each time I sac a creature? uhh yes please.

Inquisition of Kozilek: The combos in here are very effective and can be very devastating but they take time to set up. Thats where the early game hand disruption comes into play. It allows me to remove their low mana cost cards/ combo pieces before they can play them buying me time to set up my combos and build a good board state.

Mishra's Bauble: Free cantrip, not much else to say. This deck takes a few turns to build a good board state, so an early Bauble helps find removal/ disruption, and combo pieces later.

Chainer's Edict Mainly removal, but with Geralf's Messenger and Blood Artist it can also help you push through damage in a pinch.

Tragic Slip This card is pretty much a given. With all of the creature sac in this deck you should have no problem giving any creature that you want -13/-13 for 1cmc.
