I very quickly learned that I liked to be that guy when playing Magic. The one who mills through your entire library in only a few turns, or the one that exploits a sick infinite combo. Alternate win conditions and just being straight up annoying are kind of what I build my decks around, so it made sense to go out and build a commander deck that does all of these things.

The Big Idea

I fucking love mill. It's probably my favorite strategy in all of Magic. They called me crazy for wanting a mill-based commander deck, they said it couldn't be done. 100 cards is way too much to mill through, and with only one copy of each card, it'd be too inconsistent. Today, I laugh at those people, for I have built a deck that not only mills through one opposing player's deck, but can mill through multiple player's decks at the same time. So, let's break down some of these sick combos for you.

Sire of Stagnation + Sphinx's Tutelage : This is one of those happy accidents that came about when building this deck; I didn't even mean for this to happen, but it just works so well, especially against mono-colored decks. If you're lucky enough to pull this combo off within the first few turns of the game, it can essentially shut your opponent down, because it guarantees at least a six card mill for every land that they play.

Duskmantle Guildmage + Mindcrank : This is absolutely my favorite combo in this deck, because it goes infinite. All you have to do is get an opponent to put something into their graveyard (which happens A LOT with this deck), or do one point of damage.

Consuming Aberration + Phenax, God of Deception : Mid game, this will absolutely wreck your opponents libraries, especially if you happen to have another creature such as Sewer Nemesis out on the board. Turn five, Consuming Aberration. Turn six, Traumatize, tap Consuming Aberration. Game over.

Forced Fruition + Liliana's Caress : As long as your opponents don't have something like Thought Vessel out on the field, this can become a very big problem for them.

With all of that milling going on, it only makes sense for us to make use of cards that'll bring things back from our opponent's graveyard. Thankfully, we have cards such as Liliana Vess and Rise of the Dark Realms to help with that. We also have cards such as Lazav, Dimir Mastermind and Dimir Doppelganger that can give us our opponents creatures whenever they go into the graveyard.

Dread Cacodemon and then a -8 from Liliana Vess? Your opponent will concede right then and there. Overloaded Cyclonic Rift and then swinging with Consuming Aberration? Your opponents probably dead.

This deck is a blast to play, because it only gets stronger as the game goes on. Feel free to comment, suggest, and upvote, and thanks for checking it out!

Playtesting Observations

This deck plays a fair amount of high-cost cards and creatures, so it can sometimes be difficult to get a decent board presence going in the first few turns of the game. Thankfully, that means most new opponents will just ignore us, which gives us time to get everything we need online to not only wreck everyone's library, but also wreck their board state. However, this can put a pretty big target on your back once everyone knows what you're capable of. I've been doing some work on adding cards that help to prevent damage, make it difficult to attack us, and just deter aggression towards the deck. Dissipation Field helps with this a lot, as does Silent Arbiter and Propaganda. I've also added a few different cards that help to exile things from graveyards, so if we're up against a deck that likes pulling things from the graveyard we can take care of it. Ashiok, Nightmare Weaver helps with this, and then lets us take creatures back from the exile zone if we want.
