A first crack at Atla Palani, Nest Tender . Mayael the Anima was my first ever commander deck and when I saw Atla and how closely she resembles Mayael, I knew I needed to try to rebuild the deck. The deck breakdown is as follows

Updated as of August 24th, 2019

Atla is a combination of Mayael the Anima and Jalira, Master Polymorphist . Her ability is very similar to Jalira's, but Atla supplies her own sacrifice fodder and only needs to be on the battlefield for the Polymorph effect to trigger. Atla parallels with Mayael in that they share the Naya colors and like to play big creatures off of the top of the library. However, Atla has none of the drawbacks which Mayael faces. Where the latter can miss on occasion, the former will always hit paydirt.

So in a nutshell this is a Naya Polymorph deck. While Atla will be the primary Polymorph generator, I have also included Divergent Transformations and Reality Scramble as back up plans in case Atla is shut down.

The primary game plan of this deck is to cheat out large creatures by cracking a few Eggs. Once those Egg tokens die, they hatch into whatever creature card is lying nearest to the top of the library.

The quality of creatures included in this deck is high with only 1 "bad" target. As a result, I have forgone most of the popular top deck manipulation cards. Sure drawing an early Ulamog might be problematic, but this deck shouldn't have any trouble ramping quickly enough to cast the big creatures early. Plus there are a number of cards included in the deck that can get those big creatures out of hand and back into the library.

The three Egg producers in this deck are Atla herself, Mirror Entity , and Nesting Dragon . I didn't want to waste creature slots on "true" Eggs like Roc Egg as those are terrible Polymorph hits. Note that Mirror Entity is an Egg itself, and it can turn all of the creatures on the battle field into 0/0 Eggs for zero man.

The key to the success of this deck is to control when the Eggs die. Sac outlets like Ashnod's Altar , Goblin Bombardment , Evolutionary Leap , High Market , and Greater Good give us that control.

Listed below are a few cards which help provide additional utility and consistency to the deck:

Anger - Probably our only "bad" hit. However, when this deck gets going it will immediately become the Archenemy. Thus being able to immediately attack is important. Anger gives needed haste to our creatures in order to do so.

Noxious Revival puts a deceased creature back on top of the library to be cheated into play.

Congregation at Dawn and Worldly Tutor find necessary creatures to put on top of the library.

One card that I am particularly excited to try out is Penance . There are a lot of high cmc creatures in this deck and at times they may get stranded in hand. Penance provides an instant speed way to place one of those creatures on top of the library when an Egg dies. It also has an added benefit of stopping damage from a red/black source.

Warstorm Surge and Purphoros, God of the Forge provide an additional damage source that doesn't require attacking. Note that Purphoros, God of the Forge can be hatched from an Egg.

Defense of the Heart will quickly enable most of the game ending combos (listed in a lower panel) or it can go get the Avacyn, Angel of Hope + Archetype of Endurance pairing to make permanents nearly invincible.

I wanted to take a moment to discuss some of the removal package of this deck. Namely Generous Gift , Beast Within and the high board wipe density. There may be a time when destroying our own Eggs is the best course of action in order to get impactful creatures. This is one of the few times where I would prefer destroy effects to exile effects or Chaos Warp .

Some of the card draw in this deck may also seem sub-optimal, but running looting effects is actually beneficial here. A number of the creatures shuffle themselves or the entire graveyard back into the library upon entering the graveyard. By running Greater Good , Tormenting Voice and Faithless Looting (I don't have access to the expensive red wheels sadly) I can turn those discard effects into a benefit and replenish the library.

There are 3 main combos in this deck:

Thornbite Staff Combo

Whenever an Egg (or any creature for that matter) dies, the Staff will untap Atla. As a bonus, Atla is a shaman which means the staff will automatically attach to her when she enters the battlefield.

At this point Marauding Raptor and Ashnod's Altar get spicey. Marauding Raptor deals 2 damage to the Egg as it enters, killing it, which untaps Atla allowing for another activation as long as mana is available.

The real game finisher though is Ashnod's Altar + Thornbite Staff + Atla Palani, Nest Tender . These three cards allow for infinite triggers until every creature in the deck is on the battlefield.

Polyraptor Combo

This combo involves Polyraptor + Marauding Raptor + a sac outlet. Note that you must have a sac outlet in play for this to not immediately draw the game. If Polyraptor enters the battlefield while Maruading Raptor is in play, it will take 2 damage. This will trigger Polyraptor to make a clone, which will then take 2 damage. This process will repeat itself infinitely unless you stop it with a sac outlet, instant speed removal, or have Purphoros, God of the Forge or Warstorm Surge on the battlefield to kill off all opponents.

Goblin Bombardment Combo

This requires Warstorm Surge or Purphoros, God of the Forge + Polyraptor + Goblin Bombardment + an additional creature. Once all 4 are in play, sacrifice the extra creature to Goblin Bombardment and target Polyraptor . The raptor will clone itself and trigger Warstorm Surge . Then sac the original Polyraptor to Goblin Bombardment targeting the clone and then repeat the process.

Below are a few cards which have been included to help shore up some of this deck's weaknesses:

Red Elemental Blast and Rhythm of the Wild - Our anti-blue tech. This deck can be blown out by counter magic and the dreaded Cyclonic Rift . Both of these cards should help fight back against that.

Pull from Eternity - Indestructibility is easy to achieve in this deck. However, exile is a much tougher beast to combat. Pull from Eternity can get back an important exiled creature to the graveyard from where it can then make it's way back into the library.

Teferi's Protection - The ultimate panic button.

Tragic Arrogance - A criminally underplayed board wipe. This ensures we keep our best creature (or Atla), artifact, and enchantment while our opponents keep their worst permanents.

Sigarda, Host of Herons - Sacrifice effects are problematic for a decks like this that run a limited number of creatures. Sigarda provides a resilient source of protection from those effects.

Tormod's Crypt - Free graveyard removal is pretty nice

Pir's Whim - Tutors for the all important High Market while setting opponents back or by providing some political good will with the table.

I am pretty happy with how this deck has turned out, but further suggestions will be considered and greatly appreciated! And please +1 if you like the deck. Bonus points if you get the title reference.

Updates Add

So I have made quite a few changes to the original deck list. I opted to move farther away from the Mayael style build and lean into a straight Polymorph style of deck. The benefit of such a change lowers the the creature count of the deck considerably. Now every egg will turn into a potential finisher, and the extra space allows me to run more non-creature utility and silver bullet style cards. A list of the removed/added cards is provided bellow but I will be updating the deck description to reflect the changes shortly.

Removed: Acidic Slime, Angel of Serenity, Aurelia, the Warleader, Etali, Primal Storm, Eternal Witness, Garruk's Packleader, Goreclaw, Terror of Qal Sisma, Nylea, God of the Hunt, Scavenging Ooze, Seedborn Muse, Selfless Spirit, Soul of the Harvest, Spellbreaker Behemoth, Urabrask the Hidden, Recross the Paths, Steelshaper's Gift, Sensei's Divining Top, Thought Vessel, Guardian Project, Lurking Predators, Mirri's Guile, Chaos Warp, Path to Exile, Reclaim.

Added: High Market, Mirror Entity, Purphoros, God of the Forge, Kozilek, Butcher of Truth, It That Betrays, Evolutionary Leap, Defense of the Heart, Tormenting Voice, Cultivate, Pir's Whim, Reality Scramble, Wrath of God, Rout, Tragic Arrogance, Blasphemous Act, Tormod's Crypt, Mind Stone, Pull from Eternity, Red Elemental Blast, Boros Charm, Beast Within, Generous Gift, Crush Contraband, Faithless Looting, Divergent Transformations

I may have missed one or two cards here, but you can just look at the deck list for all of the cards.
