Mushroom Hunting: Slimefoot, the Stowaway

Commander / EDH BG (Golgari) Infinite Combo Reanimator

This is Slimefoot, the Stowaway combo/reanimator deck. This deck was originally built as a token deck with few janky combos and reanimator subtheme, but in the process of testing and playing, it developed into a fast combo/reanimator deck which main strategy is to drop Razaketh, the Foulblooded ASAP (turn 3-4 preferably), fetch all the needed combo pieces (infinite mana engines) with his fantastic ability, and win with Slimefoot, the Stowaway abilities.

So, what do we have in our command zone:

  1. mana cost - . Thus, we have a cheap and fast commander with an access to green and black mana and spells (Golgari). Sweet!
  2. 2/3 body - meh, but we are don't mind being fragile.
  3. first ability: "Whenever a Saproling you control dies, Slimefoot, the Stowaway deals 1 damage to each opponent and you gain 1 life." Well that is more interesting! Does this remind you of anything? It’s like playing a green and black hybrid of Oloro, Ageless Ascetic + Purphoros, God of the Forge.
  4. And now the best part: ": Create a 1/1 green Saproling creature token.". THIS IS BONKERS! any infinite mana (even colorless) and You are riding a carpet of squishy little saprolings. The second ability creates a sac fodder for his first ability to win with damage in all peoples faces, all we need is to kill all saprolings. Actually, if you already created a horde of tokens with Slimefoot's second ability, people will think twice before casting Damnation or Toxic Deluge, cuz they will die from Slimefoot's first ability. Thus, our legendary mushroom protects his brood from wrath spells and as a last resort you can kill your opponents with tons of your saprolings just by waiting for one round.

So, we have the commander which is a winning condition by itself, potential infinite token generator and a goddamn mushroom!

Our glorious legendary mushroom is the main win con. He just sits there and wait for its moment to smash people’s faces with infinite damage. But we need a good plan to win with Slimefoot. In my opinion, he can lead a variety of strategies. From stax to aggro, but I chose combo. And I always wanted to assemble a real reanimator deck, so I started from Hulk but ended up on Razaketh, the Foulblooded. At first glance, I realized that he is an excellent target for reanimation strategy, but I could not imagine how great he is until I started testing him in the deck. When this demon hits the table you probably win the game, all you need is creatures to feed him.

In short, everything happens like this - put Razaketh or Noozaketh (Necrotic Ooze that gained Razaketh, the Foulblooded ability) on the field on turn 3 or 4, start fetching combo pieces with his ability to assemble infinite mana engine, create horde of saprolings with your commander, kill all saprolings to kill all opponents.

But the devil is in the details, so I will try to describe most important combos and chains of the deck.

These combinations are the basis of the deck, and they are necessary to create an infinite number of tokens with Slimefoot:

  1. Necrotic Ooze is on the battlefield and Channeler Initiate + Devoted Druid are in the GY - infinite mana of any color. Tap Ooze for using Druid's first ability, untap Ooze with the second Druid's ability and put -1/-1 counter on the Ooze, now use Channeler Initiate's second ability to tap Ooze and to remove a -1/-1 counter and add one mana of any color, rinse and repeat. The fact that Ooze can be transformed into Noozaketh (Razaketh, the Foulblooded is in the GY) makes this combo very effective, because we can transition into it from many Buried Alive shenanigans to win from out of nowhere.

  2. Overgrowth + Wild Growth or Utopia Sprawl + Earthcraft - This combo works in the same way as the famous Earthcraft + Squirrel Nest combo - it creates infinite tapped tokens. Just tap the enchanted land to produce and create one Saproling with Slimefoot, the Stowaway ability, then activate the ability of Earthcraft and tap the newly made Saproling to untap the enchanted land, repeat ad nauseam. If we enchant a land with all three land enchantments (Overgrowth, Wild Growth, Utopia Sprawl) then we get infinite mana additionally to infinite tokens. I like this combo because all of its pieces are very useful by itself outside of combo, and this combination's cmc is pretty low, so we can start it very early with Raza on the field. Another reason is that this combo doesn't use graveyard, thus it can circumvent graveyard hate, so this engine more like a plan B. I usually use this combination in Bloodghast chain (described in Razaketh Chains section).

The best way to win with Ooze is to turn it into Noozaketh - drop Raza in the GY and Ooze will gain its ability. And the best way to turn Ooze into Noozaketh is to use Buried Alive shenanigans:

  1. Necrotic Ooze has haste (reanimated with Apprentice Necromancer, Corpse Dance, Shallow Grave)
  2. Cast Buried Alive -> Channeler Initiate + Devoted Druid + Razaketh, the Foulblooded in the GY, win (infinite mana, infinite tokens)

  1. Play Buried Alive -> Channeler Initiate + Devoted Druid + Necrotic Ooze in the GY,
  2. Reanimate Ooze with Apprentice Necromancer, Corpse Dance or Shallow Grave and create infinite tokens with Slimefoot.

This one is more consistent, resilient and fast:

  1. Start – 5 mana and one creature
  2. Play Buried Alive -> Necrotic Ooze (on the top), Devoted Druid, Razaketh, the Foulblooded
  3. Play Shallow Grave, reanimate Necrotic Ooze with haste, since now Ooze has both abilities of Druid, we immediately produce , and untap Noozaketh with two -1/-1 counter on it, we may produce another , but if we do that, we will not be able to proceed to our combo.
  4. Sacrifice a creature with Noozaketh, tutor for Channeler Initiate, use two green mana from Noozaketh to cast Initiate.
  5. Sacrifice Channeler Initiate tutor for Viscera Seer or Toxic Deluge. From that point we win the game, because now we have our ultimate combo assembled - Channeler Initiate + Devoted Druid + Razaketh, the Foulblooded in the GY. Note that Noozaketh will protect itself from exiling/bouncing with the second ability of Druid. In response we just sacrifice a creature, tutor for reanimation/recursion spell, active Noozaketh to produce another and put the last -1/-1 counter on Noozaketh sending it to the GY.

Using Ooze with Raza in the GY is much safer, because it can protect itself by gaining abilities from creatures like Blood Pet, Devoted Druid, Sylvan Safekeeper and Viscera Seer

Razaketh is one of those rare cards that can provide an unlimited number of options and chains for the deck. With him on our side we are limited only by our imagination. Here are a few chains that can be used to assemble our combos from the scratch.

Bloodghast chains:

In this chain we use Bloodghast as a fodder for multiple Razaketh activations to assemble one of the Mana Engines from above

  1. to start the chain we need and one creature - Bloodghast
  2. Put Razaketh on the battlefield with Reanimate
  3. Sacrifice Bloodghast to tutor for fetchland
  4. Put fetchland on the battlefield -> Bloodghast ETB
  5. Sacrifice Bloodghast to tutor for Earthcraft, play it
  6. Crack fetchland and put a basic Forest on the battlefield -> Bloodghast ETB, tap forest for
  7. Tap Bloodghast to activate the ability of Earthcraft and untap Forest, sacrifice Bloodghast to tutor for Crop Rotation
  8. Cast Crop Rotation and pay for it with floating , put another fetchland on the battlefield and tap forest for another -> Bloodghast ETB
  9. Tap Bloodghast to activate the ability of Earthcraft and untap Forest, sacrifice Bloodghast to tutor for Utopia Sprawl
  10. Cast Utopia Sprawl and pay its cost with floating targeting the Forest. Crack fetchland and put a basic Swamp on the battlefield -> Bloodghast ETB
  11. Tap the enchanted Forest and produce , tap Bloodghast to activate the ability of Earthcraft and untap enchanted Forest, sacrifice Bloodghast to tutor for Overgrowth
  12. Tap the enchanted Forest and produce , now we have floating, use to cast Overgrowth and enchant the Forest again, tap Razaketh to activate the ability of Earthcraft and untap the enchanted Forest.
  13. Tap the enchanted Forest and produce , use to cast Slimefoot, tap Slimefoot to activate the ability of Earthcraft and untap enchanted Forest

Mana Engine 2 is assembled, and now we can end the game with Slimefoot. We can use Bloodghast chain to assemble Nooze mana engine but it will require more life to pay

More chains are coming soon!

After the horde of saprolings has been created with one of the Mana Engines we can do the following:

  1. Use Raza’s or Noozaketh's ability to tutor for Toxic Deluge cast it paying 1 life and kill all opponents with infinite damage
  2. Or we can tutor for Viscera Seer, play it and sacrifice all our saprolings with Seer's ability to deal infinite damage and gain infinite life. Furthermore, from this point, we can tutor for all our library and play Corpse Dance any number of times reanimating and sacrificing Eternal Witness and kill opponents with infinite life loss from Collective Brutality. It can be helpful if someone is using damage preventing effect.

And we can still kill people with combat damage from Razaketh, he is a scary beater, or by attacking with 9999 saprolings.

I will be grateful for any help and advice!

Updates Add

With the release of a new card Opposition Agent, black magic has received an extremely strong effect in its arsenal, which will have to be taken into account especially when playing a lot of search effects. Not only is this card good in itself, but we also get a nightmarish lock combo with the Maralen of the Mornsong.

Well, and a nice bonus is the fact that this combo can be instantly collected using Protean Hulk
