Kill It With Mountains - A Semi-Competitive Land-Based Combo Deck for EDH

Do you love , but prefer winning with flashy combos and unique interactions? Then Borborygmos Enraged might be the commander for you.

Kill It With Mountains is a semi-competitive big-mana combo/control deck, though pinning down its strategy as such is a bit misleading. In truth the deck is highly adaptive, and though most of its win conditions involve combos, it can become more of a control or aggro/ramp deck if it needs to. The deck is even adaptive to your playgroup, and can easily be down-tuned in power or teched with specific answers to combat decks in your meta. Ultimately, this deck is for players who enjoy ramp strategies and large creatures, but prefer more nuanced options and decision-making.

Main Strategy Show

Borborygmos's main strategy revolves around game phases. Which spells you prioritize and the lines of play you take will depend on which phase of the game you are in: the early-game, the mid-game, or the late-game.

Early-Game

The early-game (approx. turns 1-3) will almost exclusively consist of piecing together your ramp cards in the most effective way possible. It's not uncommon to cast Bobo himself on turn 4, so be sure to keep that in mind as you make your mulligans. As you ramp, try to weave in spells that will support Borborygmos or hinder your opponents if possible. A Blood Moon does a lot more work on turn 2 than on turn 4, and you'll want Abundance in play when you cast Borborygmos so you can combo off as soon as possible. Try to keep this in mind as you decide on your lines of play.

Mid-Game

The mid-game (approx. turns 4-6) is your golden opportunity to take advantage of all that set-up performed in the early-game, as your opponents will likely still be setting up or casting their puny 4-drop commanders. Typically, these are the turns you'll be casting Borborygmos. You should also be casting any other support spells that you had not yet cast in the early-game. Once you have Borborygmos onboard, you also have the ability to keep the table's creatures under control with Bobo's bolts, as most utility creatures will die to 3, if not 6, damage. Finally, these are are also the turns that you'll want to, if possible, start stringing together some kind of combo so that when the end-game comes, you're prepared to claim victory. Refill your hand with cards like Garruk, Primal Hunter or Knollspine Dragon and dig for those precious combo pieces, or for spells that can tutor them up.

Late-Game

The late-game (approx. turns 7+) should be the point at which you can start executing the deck's game-winning plays. Whether this be through Abundance + Keen Sense /Abundance + Snake Umbra , Tooth and Nail for Kiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker + Zealous Conscripts , or even just beats from Borborygmos, you should be looking for some way to close out the game.

Combos & Synergies Show

Game-Winning Combos

Borborygmos Enraged + Abundance + Snake Umbra/Keen Sense - The mainstay combo of this deck. Snake Umbra and Keen Sense both trigger off a creature dealing damage (not just combat damage), so Abundance onboard alongside a Borborygmos and a land in hand allows you to pull every remaining land from your deck. This is almost always enough damage to kill the table at this stage of the game. Similarly, if you don't have Abundance but have a Life from the Loam in hand or grave, you can often still loop Loam's dredge ability enough times to kill the table, or at least the most threatening player.

Kiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker + Zealous Conscripts - Plan B. If things aren't lining up correctly with your commander, you should be digging for these cards or Tooth and Nail . For those who are unaware, this is an infinite combo. With both on the battlefield, you can target Zealous Conscripts with Kiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker , and then target Kiki-Jiki with the new Conscripts token to untap and reuse Kiki-Jiki's ability. Rinse and repeat, swing for a billion.

Game-Breaking Synergies

Abundance + Sylvan Library - With both Abundance and Sylvan Library onboard, you can essentially draw 2 extra cards for free every turn. This is because Abundance is a replacement effect, so when you use it to filter your extra draws with Sylvan Library , they technically count as 'new cards' separate from Sylvan Library 's effect, meaning you don't have to pay 4 life each to keep them in your hand. This works to a lesser degree with other replacement effects as well, like Life from the Loam .

Defense of the Heart + Forbidden Orchard - Forbidden Orchard used on the same opponent essentially turns Defense of the Heart into another copy of Tooth and Nail , allowing you another way to search Kiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker and Zealous Conscripts .

Land Shenanigans - With a single fetchland in the graveyard and a Crucible-like-effect alongside something like Azusa, Lost but Seeking , you can make 3 land drops every turn without spending any cards from your hand. Additionally, with a Wasteland or Strip Mine in the mix, you can destroy 3 enemy lands every turn. Extra land drops also stack, so with both Azusa and, say, Oracle of Mul Daya or Wayward Swordtooth , things only get crazier. Add a Horn of Greed or Nissa, Vital Force emblem on top of that, and you've put yourself in an almost unlosable position! All in all, this makes early tutoring for Azusa and Ramunap Excavator a very attractive line of play if possible.

Standout Individual Cards Show

Avenger of Zendikar - Sometimes, our combos simply fall through. Maybe we're starved on a resource, or our opponent has put us on the backfoot with interaction. Whatever may be causing our gameplan to go awry, the Avenger can be a kind of panic button for the deck, as it is capable of winning the game entirely on its own.

Creeping Renaissance - A kind of mini-Praetor's Council, Creeping Renaissance will allow you to find that last burst of damage you need to close out a game. It can also be used to buyback an important combo piece in a pinch, and can even be recast from the graveyard!

Horn of Greed - This is a symmetrical effect, and your opponents will draw off of it - however, Azusa and other Exploration effects break parity on this card pretty easily. In a deck that's starved for card-draw, Horn of Greed provides reliable, consistent value.

Knollspine Dragon - While Ol' Spiney might just seem like a lacklustre 7-drop, it's actually one of the best cards in the deck. It's important to realize that this deck deals large amounts of damage in bursts. As a result, Knollspine Dragon will often draw you somewhere between 20-30 cards - this should provide you with more than enough resources to close out the game.

Nissa, Vital Force - In the worst case scenario, Nissa is a pricey buyback spell that leaves behind a planeswalker. It's not the highest floor, but it's completely playable. Often times, however, Nissa is a walker that ultimates a single turn after it comes into play, giving you a permanent, one-sided Horn of Greed that triggers off of any land entering under your control.

Realm Seekers - It's possible the Seekers should simply be a copy of Ulvenwald Hydra , but it has a few qualities that might give it an edge in this deck; while mana-intensive, the ability to tutor multiple lands from a single source is quite powerful. Additionally, bringing lands to your hand is quite powerful alongside Borborygmos, and also allows you to use that land's ability immediately if you play it for the turn (rather than fetching it to the battlefield tapped). One way or another, however, having a land tutor tied to a creature is valuable in this deck, as it effectively turns all your creature tutors into land tutors as well (notable also is that Realm Seeker is searchable off of Imperial Recruiter , while the Hydra quickly scales out of Recruiter's range).

Other Possible Inclusions Show

Gaea's Cradle - This seems incredible if you can afford it. Not much to be said; it's Gaea's Cradle .

Tempt with Discovery - This spell can be absurd, as you can search out multiple important lands like Strip Mine or Ancient Tomb . However, if your group knows what the card can do, they will likely decline to search (or worse; they'll all grab Strip Mine s of their own). If you think you can get away with it, try this card out.

Wheel of Fortune - Hands down, one of the most efficient card draw spells available to the Gruul color set. However, you may not want to give your opponent's a full new hand of interaction (though because we ramp so quickly, you often get threats out of your opponent's hand if this spell is resolved early or mid-game).
