Hey, Kiyomei here from the top Derevi deck on tapped out, and owner of the CEDH Derevi discord.

(cedh derevi discord ; https://discordapp.com/invite/zf36QB8)

So this morning Urza was spoiled, and it has some interesting effects, to say the least. definitely a great addition for Cedh with this new infinite/storm/artifact deck

Urza, Lord High Artificer / Based and inspired by the decklist of my Old Oona list that used somewhat the same combo's and generic blue Teferi list for best in slot blue cards + added synergies with Urza!

So what came to mind instantly was a flashback to Oona for me as she was also an infinite outlet long ago and was kinda relevant before partners were released. But Urza doesn't have the high tutor density Black has to offer to increase its speed, yet it still allows for some compact and easy to assemble combo's since they are mostly artifact based and Mono blue is well known to be able to grind out games and go late game!

His Abilities

1: His first ability is kind of relevant since the artifact he brings with him can be tapped for so he only costs if he would resolve. it getting bigger equal to the number of artifacts you control is kind of irrelevant unless a super awkward long game occurs and combat becomes a thing after failed ad nausea and such!

2: His second ability allows you to add of any artifact by tapping it. This is interesting in conjunction with winter orb, static orb, howling mine, and other Stax pieces like gravediggers as we can break parity from those or generate mana of otherwise static Stax pieces. This also means that if necessary with enough artifact this deck can play through Null Rod and Stony Silence effects.

3: And for mana you have an infinite outlet to cast your entire deck and respond to any interaction by just activating it again and again and again until you've put every card in exile, spells become loopable as well with time-twister or shuffle Graveyard to library effects as you can access them again with his ability...

4: P-engine + sensei's top breaks this deck as P-engine also taps for blue :'(

5: same as PST builds you can tuck any other spell under a second scepter with copy artifact even Narset's reversal and cast spells forever!

So what's the game plan after infinite mana generally?

With access to your entire library (in exile) you get to cast anything you've exiled with Urza until end of the turn (casting them would put them in the graveyard after which is important for recursion loops)...

The Main line to look for is to cast a Jace and resolve his +1 winning you the game with every counterspell available. (We do not opt for Labman because of abrupt decay)

If Jace is for some reason No longer accessible you can look to loop any spell you have in this deck... This is done by casting any spell for example and countering it with swan song. (fill your graveyard with 7 or more cards and cast a time-twister/spiral holding priority and casting narset's reversal on it. This will put the recursion spell in hand and copy it while reversal hits the graveyard as it resolves + shuffles back in. you can then just activate Urza again to put the reversal in the castable exiled card bin again, rinse and repeat with any spell you like and just shuffle them back in when you're done.

For example,

  • cyclonic rifting all their nonland permanents.

  • generating enough storm and eventually hitting aether flux's kill cap to bolt everyone to death (you can even stack instants on top of each other to get to the high life total quicker as well by just using only instant)...

  • take infinite turns of nexus of fate...

  • Casting any spell, swan song it and pass the turn with infinite birds loop and access to loads of interaction?

  • Narset and wheels to empty hands

  • loop wheels to commit sudoku with everyone at the table if all else fails...

  • can even kill everyone with tezzi boi's "ult" on emptied out boards and what not...

  • just reach infinite mana and find whatever way to win with as few dead card slots in the deck possible: only one we have is Jace... but he still is good enough to include as other wincons get exhausted or hindered

Key win con Cards ; Basalt Monolith + Power Artifact + Grim Monolith + Rings of Brighthearth + Pili-Pala + Grand Architect + Dramatic Reversal + Paradox Engine

Basalt Monolith + Power Artifact

Grim Monolith + Power Artifact

Basalt Monolith + Rings of Brighthearth

Grand Architect + Pili-Pala

Dramatic Reversal + Isochron Scepter

Paradox Engine + Sensei's Divining Top + Voltaic Key

Isochron Scepter + Paradox Engine

The combos so far ;

Basalt Monolith + Power Artifact = "Infinite" colorless Mana

Grim Monolith + Power Artifact = "Infinite" colorless Mana

Rings of Brighthearth + Basalt Monolith + 2mana to start it = "Infinite" colorless Mana

Rings of Brighthearth + Grim Monolith = does not work because you can't net mana

Rings Ruling ;

  1. Add 3 mana with Basalt Monolith (3 mana available)

  2. Pay 3 mana to untap Basalt Monolith (0 mana available)

  3. Pay 2 mana to copy the untap ability (-2 mana available; need other mana sources)

  4. After the copied ability resolves, add 3 mana (3 mana available, monolith tapped, untap ability on the stack)

  5. Original untap ability resolves, add 3 mana (6 mana available). Go to step 2.

The Monolith lets you net colorless mana because of the untap copy which you can loop "infinitely" after you find an extra 2 mana to start it.

(NO LONGER IN THE DECK if you're on a budget consideration go for it!)

-Too slow- requires a turn because of summoning sickness...

Pili-Pala + Grand Architect = "infinite" colored mana

Step 1 : Make Pili-Pala blue.

step 2 : tap Pili-Pala for 2 mana

step 3 : Untap Pili-Pala with that 2 mana for one extra mana

rinse and repeat and net one mana of any color every time you do so

Dramatic Reversal + Isochron Scepter + any mana rock that taps for 3 to go infinite colored or colorless (depending on the rock) because it untaps itself. adding a rock that taps for color and the party ends early for everyone...

Rings of Brighthearth + Basalt Monolith + Sensei's Divining Top

  1. Have Rings, Monolith, and Top in play.
  2. Tap Monolith for 3 mana, then use that 3 mana to untap itself, paying 2 additional mana to copy the untap ability (It is a separate ability, not a mana ability).
  3. Untap the Monolith twice, tapping it both times for a total of 6 mana.
  4. Keep untapping the Monolith twice for 5 mana (3 + 2 to copy with the Rings) and then tapping it twice for 6, netting you 1 mana each time, generating infinite mana.
  5. Tap the top to draw a card, using 2 of your infinite mana to copy the ability using the Rings.
  6. Draw a card, then put the Top on top of your deck, then redraw the Top from the second iteration of the ability resolving.
  7. Replay the Top using your infinite mana and repeat steps 5 and 6 to draw as many cards as you want.

Once you have achieved infinite mana you can bin your entire deck in exile and cast anything you have in there for free... you can just get jace on the field and resolve his +1 to win on spot... (you can leave some cards if you think they will force you to draw and lose, and you have all the interaction in the game available to you for free at this point)

Let us say we lose jace to extract or exile :'(

The way you can still loop spells from the exiled pile of urza is pretty simple;

For example, you'll cast a generic random spell like a draw spell or something... Hold priority and Swan Song it... you'll gain a 2/2 bird and 2 cards in graveyard or more from beforehand... proceed to cast Timetwister or Time Spiral holding priority and using Narset's Reversal on them to put them back in your hand.

Narset's Reversal will resolve hit the graveyard and will be shuffled back in with Swan Song and your random spells (more than 7!)...

Here you can activate Urza again to exile those cards again... With twister or spiral in hand and narset in the exile you can loop any spell you like as you have infinite mana and infinite interaction anyway if you wouldn't be able to get to jace...

(You can even put yourself in a safer position if need by if you using Narset, Parter of Veils while having left some cards in the deck and use Windfall after to put everyone on one card except for you if you're expecting a fearie macab during your graveyard shuffle if somehow you don't find interaction in all the exiled cards ^^.)

(you can deck opponents with memory jar loops as well and stay safe because you can refill your deck by just casting all the cards in response and twister them in again after that while opponents hands are still faced down if jace is no longer available!)

the loops can be done with any card and a shuffle effect although this is non-deterministic if you don't go infinite and could take a while of paradox storm. But if you've gone infinite you can bin the entire deck and cast all cards for free until end of turn then shuffle them back with spiral or twister and even safely pass turn with infinite activations of Urza available for instants/interaction/counters for whatever they try on their emptied out board states due to cyclonic rift loop if you were required to go the 2/2 bird army path...

cursed totem / nul rod / stony silence / rule of law / artifact removal is "somewhat" of an "answer" to this deck if it doesn't counter them or gets rid of them soon. yet because of Urza, we can deal with null rod effects if he's in play...

  • Force of Negation : Doesn't feel right for a regular 3cmc counterspell that only works like force does in opponents turn when this deck really wants to also protect the combo! it's just not versatile enough compared to the other options and while on mono-blue people expect you to be able to deal with a lot anyway so the mind game of force of will and pact is already enough and better slots by far...

  • Laboratory Maniac abrupt decay... dead card slot 2 ...

  • Codex Shredder mill? do I look like a casual pleb? Titans all over

  • Trinisphere You can only break parity on this during upkeep, so the window for it to be as useful as both orbs is far smaller. but fine in storm /hulk meta if needed, i'de still play null rod before I'd play Trini...

  • Overburden dork heavier meta slot this in as flex!!!

  • Future Sight Way to Mana intensive. only works with sai, apart from that it's not that great at all either compared to the compact monolith win cons...
