Beware the Shrubbery (Competitive Lands Matter)

Commander / EDH Burn Competitive RG (Gruul)

Lands matter Borborygmos

This deck wants to ramp land onto the battlefield and slam down Borborygmos ASAP. Once he's in play, we can have all sorts of fun.

Borborygmos Enraged + Keen Sense / Snake Umbra = Discard a land: deal 3 damage to any player, draw a card. Throw Abundance into the mix, and it makes an infinite combo that lets you cycle through every land in your deck to defeat all of your opponents at instant speed.

Borborygmos Enraged + Grafted Exoskeleton = Discard a land: Deal 3 damage to target creature or player in the form of -1/-1 counters or poison counters, respectively. If a player gains 10 poison counters in Commander, they lose the game. That's just 4 lands to kill an opponent.

Gratuitous Violence to double the bolt damage, Illusionist's Bracers to double the bolt triggers, Lightning Greaves and Archetype of Endurance to keep him safe.

Abundance + Sylvan Library allows for some trickery to draw extra cards without paying life. Abundances ability is a replacement affect and "puts the card in your hand" rather than drawing it, therefor letting you draw 3 cards per turn without losing any life, as long as you use the replacement effect on all 3 draws.

Illusionist's Bracers + Keen Sense / Snake Umbra (or just both auras) often lets us draw through as much of our deck as we want in a single turn. The Bracers double the trigger, giving you two separate bolts which each trigger the draw affect of the auras. Since just about half of our deck is lands, this can often give you pretty much infinite draw and infinite bolts until the game is over. Eventually you'll draw into Reliquary Tower or Praetor's Counsel which will let you keep your hand, which is probably the size of half your deck. Counsel also throws all those lands in your graveyard back into your hand, letting you pretty much finish out the game even against multiple opponents.

Hour of Promise gives us a ton of combo utility. We can either grab Valakut, the Molten Pinnacle + Vesuva to immediately have a double Valakut active, or we can grab Dark Depths + Thespian's Stage to get an immediate 20/20 indestructible flier. Or, if you're in need of some defense, grab The Tabernacle at Pendrell Vale + Glacial Chasm to tax the opponents creatures and put you behind a difficult to remove wall. Either way, this card puts in a lot of work for us. Oh, and Grafted Exoskeleton is a lot of fun with Marit Lage.

Quite often this deck will end out with 20+ lands in play due to our copious amounts of ramp and cards like Tempt with Discovery, Collective Voyage, and Splendid Reclamation. I know what you're thinking... lands are useless if we can't throw them around as Lightning Bolts! I hear you, and that's why we run Storm Cauldron. Drop down this bad boy, and all of the sudden we've got a hand of 20+ Lightning Bolts! to finish out the game with!

Valakut, the Molten Pinnacle + Vesuva/Thespian's Stage + Prismatic Omen = Put a land into play, deal 3/6/9 damage to any target. This turns our many land search/ramp spells into direct burn damage. Wort, the Raidmother can make for some really fun plays if you've got Valakut activated. Boundless Realms and Scapeshift are often win cons once Valakut is active, while Scapeshift can get out all the pieces at once.

Landfall abilities from Avenger of Zendikar, Tireless Tracker, Omnath, Locus of Rage, and Rampaging Baloths provide further value for all the extra land plays we'll be making.

Since we've got so much land search, and since most of it will allow us to find any land, we may as well take advantage of utility lands. Arcane Lighthouse, Dust Bowl, Gaea's Cradle, Glacial Chasm, Lotus Vale, Madblind Mountain, Reliquary Tower, Scorched Ruins, The Tabernacle at Pendrell Vale, Boseiju, Who Shelters All, Thespian's Stage/Vesuva and most importantly Valakut, the Molten Pinnacle all provide a very wide range of utility and ramp to allow you to take full advantage of any situation.
