Pithing Needle vs. Infection
Asked by Wbg1415 3 years ago
If I play Pithing Needle and choose Hand of the Praetors and I swing with an Elder Gargaroth and am blocked by Hand of Praetors will I still have -1/-1 put onto the Gargaroth? Or are the -1/-1 counters considered an activated ability?
Okay thank you, so if I block an infect creature with a creature who has shroud, is that blocking creature protected from infect counters?

No. Infect is a static ability that changes the result of damage. It doesn't target anything, activate, or trigger. The only way to stop the counters (-1/-1 or poison) is to prevent the damage. White Knight , Champion Lancer and Fog will stop Hand of the Praetors from placing -1/-1 counters. Gladecover Scout , Algae Gharial , and Stifle will not.

Activated abilities are always written as (cost):(effect). Infect is a static ability. Pithing Needle will stop all abilities on Staff of Domination , only the first ability on Blasting Station , and none on Hand of the Praetors
